Bouwmeester signs with Calgary

No real surprise here. All of the reports seemed to say he was close to signing with the Flames. I would love to see the financial terms of the deal though.

Edit: TSN now reporting a cap hit of $6.6 million per year.

Calgary just got substantially better. Who knows what this means for the playoffs. If I remember correctly, Bouwmeester's only played in a single playoff game since junior (possibly a single playoff 'series').

If they trade Dion it's a bit of a wash. Their PP will be less dangerous but they'll end up a stronger defensive team.

They should play it smart and keep Dion, he's at his lowest point in terms of trade value anyway and they don't need more high-end scoring forwards- they need more team chemistry and scoring depth.

Thats alot of money. 6.6 mil for 5 years

It is, but he would be making 6 million at the least, so they aren't overpaying by a large amount. This all depends on what kind of numbers he can put up over the next few years...

Not really. For a Dman of his calibre, just entering his prime, and finally playing for a real team, its a steal.

Good to know we'll have a 35 year old Rafalski for 600k cheaper though. *facepalm*

Teams can talk to free agents starting at midnight, but no deals can be made until noon.

Oh, okay. Thanks!

I haven't seen Bouwmeester play very much, so I have yet to see the big deal about him. Is he really worth $6.6M or is it more of a case of them paying him for potential?

Yes sir, he is worth $6.6M...

I would trade Rafalski+Hudler+2nd draft pick to get him...

Hes a great young defennseman. Moves the puck well, big, uses his body, has some offense. And hes still young at 25 years old. I doubt he'll ever be the physical Dman that Pronger is, or the offensive powerhouse that Lidstrom is, but the important thing is that hes probably the most well-rounded defenseman under the age of 28.

And hes about 10x better defensively than Phaneuf is. But then again, many Dmen are.

Don't know if you're serious....

It's 3 a.m. and here I come so you should probably run. (at least here anyway)

and with the deadline so near and no good Wings news I felt like we need something else to divert from all the hype LOL.

Calgary looks to spend much money on particular players: Iginla, Phaneuf, Bouwmeester, Langkow, Regehr, and Jokinen. These players eat up 7, 5.25, 4.5, 6.6, 6.5, 4.02; not in orde though. If you ad all those number, 33.87 cap number. Looks the Flames will be the power house in NW Division over Canucks

Especially if the Canucks lose the Sedin twins, which looks more likely than not right now.

That's a very good signing for Calgary. I look forward to playing them.

They do seem to be sticking out of the NW, don't they? But don't jump the gun... they havn't exactly done much in the past. Last four seasons -->

Lost in Conference Quarterfinals, 3–4 (Mighty Ducks)

Lost in Conference Quarterfinals, 2–4 (Red Wings)

Lost in Conference Quarterfinals, 3–4 (Sharks)

Lost in Conference Quarterfinals, 2–4 (Blackhawks)
