No spezza, tavares or stamkos...

A bit surprised with cleary, robidas etc but the roster is huge so they will probably be cut first.

All 3 staal bro's... cool

Osgood should have been given an invite. If you can name me an NHL goalie who, in the last two years, has consistently played better in tournament play than Chris Osgood, I'll give you a cookie.

Given that Osgood was a Conn Smythe contender until the end of the Finals the last two years...and stands a decent chance of being one again this year...I find it ridiculous that he wasn't given an invite.

EDIT: Also...Ryan Smyth and Dan Cleary are "youngsters getting a chance" apparently.

Cleary > Spezza??

If you're wanting to build a hockey team and want someone to play any role required, yes. Those Senators guys are prissy boys who want top six or nothing. Someone like Cleary or Iginla would do anything asked. I'm surprised Heatley got an invite.

lets be honest though... Brodeur and Luongo are locks... I'd rather have Ozzie rest during the break, than be a 3rd wheel just waiting to even dress...

Who would you rather have in a playoff-style environment? Ozzie, Fleury, or Mason?

Hmm..based on the past two years:

Mason cracked under heavy offensive pressure.

Fleury is extremely inconsistent regardless of pressure.

Ozzie is perhaps the best clutch goalie in the NHL after Brodeur; last year the Wings are out by the end of the second round if not for Osgood.

Ward is the only guy besides Brodeur and Luongo who has a real argument against those two and Ozzie to make the team IMHO. But I guess I am thinking more in terms of "how does the guy play when the pressure is really on" instead of "what kind of stats did the guy post last season" because, I dunno, maybe the former is what's really important in this case. But, as Brodeur is the best Canadian goalie, and the most clutch goalie in the world, it won't matter than much.

Team Canada will ice the best team, maybe Russia will be able to compete.

Cleary clearly does not belong there and he made it only because he plays for the Wings imho.

Cleary is an awesome role player. Maybe he made it because he plays on the Wings and Team Canada is led by Yzerman and Babcock, but he could be a great player on that team imo.

You can't have 4 lines of nothing but stars. You need grinders, defensive specialists, PK'ers etc.

Don't know if he'll make the final team, but I know I'd rather have him on the ice in an Olympic Gold game than Joe Thornton or Pat Marleu.

Jordan Staal doesn't really belong there either imo.

If this were true, Osgood and Stuart would've been given invites. Canada needs different elements, despite all the good he's done for Canada in the past, Ryan Smyth is a joke of a player now and doesnt deserve to be at that camp anymore then Cleary.

we're arguing the same point kinda, I agree whole heartedly that he is better than any of the other 3 on that list... my point is, that the 3rd goalie for an Olympic team doesn't even play really and Luongo and Brodeur are going to get all the time, so might as well have Ozzie rest, rather than have to travel to VAN just to sit...

Staal is there for the same reason that Cleary is.

Role player.

Very excited here in Newfoundland. I was only a little excited about the Olympics before today, but knowing that Danny is on the camp roster has ratcheted up the excitement for me. I will be over the moon if he makes the team, and so will the rest of Newfoundland.

And for the naysayers who say Cleary doesn't belong there and is only there because he's a Red Wing, get a life. He has come a long way in the past 4 years and without him this postseason I doubt they would have got as far as they did. He scored some HUGE goals in the playoffs. I'm not saying he's in the same league as Dats or Hank, but he has a role and he fills it well. He can play on all four lines and never looks out of place. He is a high tempo guy and the Canadian team is going to need those players if they want to win the gold.

What Yzerman has said is that he is looking for quality two way players. I think Cleary fits that bill pretty well. He can play on any line, can score, and check other teams top players. I think that fits what Yzerman wants exactly.

Difference is Jordan Staal isn't good enough defensively to be used very much as a shutdown guy, and there are a ton of Centers that are better than him at both ends of the ice. I think the Pens have played him sporadically on the Wing but it hasn't worked out very well.
