gcom007 1,465 Report post Posted July 4, 2009 (edited) It'll be great to have all these kids in the lineup and I'm excited, but they're still kids. There are going to be growing pains and I've got to say, I fear coming on here when they start struggling. LGW loves guys until they have them and then the second they screw up, they're lazy and they suck. Oh well...such is life I guess. I'm excited storms or not. Lots of upsides to this new group. Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted July 4, 2009 Moen won't score 15 goals... no way. Well it's about as likely as Helm scoring 15 next season, so why not? Unrealistic offensive expectations of grinder/shut-down guys isn't new
Snazzy 0 Report post Posted July 4, 2009 (edited) The Red Wings will net less goals next year, but we'll also have a better PK and overall tighter defense. With that said, don't underestimate the power of Franzen, Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Hossa, Hudler and Sammy netted a lot of goals but I think it's safe to say it won't be as bad as some of you think... Flip will do better with 2nd line ice time. I'm not expecting a big increase in goals from Cleary except some big clutch goals (but if he nets more than last year, great!--he's our playoff weapon). I do have a feeling that Leino and Helm will surprise us. Not saying they'll score a ton, but they'll certainly net their fair share. So we'll lose 82 goals and gain 50-55 goals (assuming Zetterberg and Datsyuk will score 5 more goals each then last year) and Leino gets 15, Helm gets 10, Abby gets 5 and the unnamed player gets 5, oh and Flip will get 10-15 more goals than last year due to his increased TOI and PP time. -- and I think my prediction is very conservative, they could all do better, but who knows. Anyhow, just improving our PK will be huge. That should make up for our 32 less goals... oh, and Ozzy should be up to the challenge. I think we'll be fine. edit: Ericsson quarterbacking the point should net some biggies too... Like he did in the playoffs (and game 7 against the Pens) Edited July 4, 2009 by Snazzy

Unrealistic offensive expectations of grinder/shut-down guys isn't new I'd say twelve with one shorthanded. If Abby plays full time next year I hope he's ready to play wing. Apparently that was the reason he got benched during the finals.
Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted July 4, 2009 Destroy the freakin cap.. it sucks so hard. Disagree. And Abdelkader playing this season would be sweet.
Yzerfan75 0 Report post Posted July 4, 2009 That's interesting, a few weeks ago he specifically said Abdelkader would NOT be on the roster. I'm guessing that may have changed because of all of the players we've lost... Exactly. I get the feeling he's throwing out random bones here.
Finnish Wing 110 Report post Posted July 4, 2009 http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2009/07/re...land_on_at.html Somewhat implies that he will be on the roster next year. "Leino, Abdelkader and Helm are ready. We think Valteri Filppula, at age 25, can take a step forward. Jiri Hudler can take a step forward. We have a power forward we like in Franzen and two elite players in Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk. That's the cap world. The cap world is not designed for you to have these guys and go get a Hossa. The salary cap is working: It's a level playing field." So this means that Leino will re-sign that two year deal max 1M/year. Abby will also be on the lineup in 3rd or 4th line. Filppula will definitely be a top 6 forward; either 2nd line center or 1st line winger. Huds will re-sign one year deal max 2,5M/year. After Homer and Maltby (possibly also Lids and Draper) retire after next season Huds will get a raise if we want to keep him. For how much Huds is willing to sign for determinates if the dumped D-man is Lebda or Lilja. Also worthing noting for some of you guys: I don't think Flip is overpaid and I don't think Huds should get that same 3M. Flip is a better player and he still has more potential. I was also thinking why Leino is signing a two year deal instead of a one year deal. Because after a year we would have certainly more cap space. There are some "issues" when building the lines: - can Leino play in the 2nd line? - is it wise to have a rookie 3rd line? - are Z and D together? - Homer plays in the PP unit, but can he play more minutes 5on5? You have to answer to at least one of the questions 'yes' to get those line combos work. We all know that there will be many different line in the first about 20-30 games. UKWING 8 Report post Posted July 4, 2009 I'm sorry, but I really don't like all of this. We're taking kids who ONLY played in the playoffs last year and putting them as regulars on the team and expecting to have breakout seasons. You all are basically saying, "Its okay we've lost 60 goals in Hossa and Sammy, we'll make it up when Leino, Helm, and Abs score at least 20 each". You guys are expecting way too much and are putting a lot of pressure for first year kids to fill some BIG shoes. I don't think its gonna happen, and unless we somehow sign a at least a 3rd line 15-20 goal scorer, I think we're in trouble. we will be fine. the wings actually scored 37 fewer goals in 08 so they don't need to replace hossa's 40 goals; they just need to tighten up on defence which i think they will. they will need to replace sammy's 20 goals but leino should be capable of putting up 10-15 of those goals. i am not worried at all - of course the wings lineup will not be as talented as last year but it will be a pretty similar roster to 08 which was good enough to win the cup then and will be good enough to win it again next year. Guest mindfly Report post Posted July 4, 2009 Disagree. And Abdelkader playing this season would be sweet. How can you disagree on that, being a red wing fan with a rich owner etc, before the cap they could just add star player after starplayer, win 3cups in 6years etc.. now it's too even and the cap is designed that after a championship you will lose several players... its just BS

I think it's one of the greatest things happened here. With the cap, every team is on the same line. Rich owners are exactly what suck: their money could have come from something like real estate business which has nothing to do with hockey. I hope that SM-liiga and other European leagues would have the cap in the future too.
pirateasaurus 0 Report post Posted July 4, 2009 I'm a little worried that abby might need 1 more season in grand rapids but i think he will do well. I also believe that this will be the year of the Flipper.
Dimaline312000 51 Report post Posted July 4, 2009 I tihnk he should be on the Wings roster this coming season. He's young and has great hockey sense and I think he'll be a nice fit on this team next season. I hope he does get to start the season on the Wings roster. I'm fine with not signing and FA's anytime soon. As long as we can do what we can to keep the amount of players that we need. I think we will still be a strong hockey team. Jeff M 0 Report post Posted July 4, 2009 (edited) We don't need Abby to "step it up" this season. We need the other guys who have been around for just a little. Like Helm, Leino. They both have had more oppurtunities to make the club than Abby did. And if Helm can keep his energy at the playoff tempo he did with the big hits and great PK's, as I said in an earlier reply, Helm will not only create scoring oppurtunities for himself, but as well as others like Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Edit*- if he was on another team he would annoy me so bad. Boy do I love having him here in Hockeytown! Plus random- Don't you hate when the Wings are on TV and the broadcasters are almost peeing themselves when their hometown team scores. Damn. I moved out of Detroit, so now I have to buy a 200 dollar package just to watch the Wings and when they broadcast away it pisses me off.
