Mike Grier's agent says he's 'interested' in Red Wings

Winging it in Motown's Christopher Hollis delivered a bombshell of the pleasant "it's who you know" variety via unrestricted free agent winger Mike Grier's agent, Jay Fee:

July 27, Winging it in Motown: "Several teams have contacted me as they see Mike as a very solid asset and a plus for their organization. Detroit is a first class organization in which Mike has expressed interest. I believe the Red Wings respect Mike as a player and true professional. We'll have to see where it goes from here."

Grier was banged-up for a chunk of the 08-09 season, but the 34-year-old right winger, born in Detroit and raised in Boston, remains a big (6'1," 225 lbs.), gritty and defensively responsible winger who will occasionally drop the gloves if necessary, and, mostly...He's a solid citizen who's a leader both on and off the ice.

He does come with a, "San Jose Sharks fans say he 'looked slow' while battling knee and "lower-body" injuries last season" warning, and if he wants to come to Detroit, he'd have to take a huge discount off his $1.775 million salary from this past season. I guess, "We'll have to see where it goes from here," to quote Mr. Fee.

Just read that on mlive. I hope he can come to Detroit, even though I would rather have Malhotra. Either way, their both solid 3rd or 4th line grinders.

Beat me to it. It's good to know the interest is mutual.

Edit: Oh, and for the record, that collision between Grier and Clowe was all Clowe's fault.

I have to disagree, it was Datsyuks fault. Datsyuks used his amazing "Dangle dangle" abilities to purposely make them collide, just for fun. :nhl_crach:

To be fair- at that point Datsyuk still used his dangling powers for evil as well as good. Thankfully he's reformed his ways.

This. Is. Awesome.

Please, let this happen Kenny. Bring Iron Mike to MoTown. This man is a wrecking ball, no lie.

I want Grier on the 4th line for 750K. If this happens... I will be a happy, happy man.

I didn't know they moved meet the Press to the LGW forums but that's fine.

I think Grier would be great for the Wings. I think Kenny can get it done I'm just a little scared that he is going to want more than we can offer.

He will bring experience and leadership to the 3rd or 4th line but at a price.

Does anyone know what he made last year at San Jose?

There is no way he is going to take less than $1 million. Although I was really excited at first about this rumor, there is no way it happens. We just don't have the cap space. The only way we could take him would be to sign him for a long-term deal. There is no way they sign him to a long-term deal. He is past his prime...I give him maybe 3 more years in the NHL.

I'd happily pay him 1.25 million to do that. 1 million if he hasn't gotten healthy enough to prove his durability to the training staff.

I wouldn't mind seeing Grier in a Wings uniform, I think he would fit in well, but I have to wonder if his agent is just trying a little salesmanship for his client. He is, as yet, unsigned, and at this point probably looking at a pay cut over last year, but by raising the attention that other teams are interested and that they are talking is just a way of adding false urgency to getting him signed quicker and for a better offer than he might field if he were to just sit around and wait for an offer come training camp time. It would be great to see him come here with a socialist mindset, and take a more modest wage for the betterment of the team, than a capitalist wage for the good of his ( and his agents) wallet. And Doesn't a "Hometown Discount" kind of sound a little socialist also. I mean, who on this earth would ever possibly give up making all the money that they could make with a jumbo contract to take a little less so that their team could stand a better chance at getting some better players with the money you left on the table. That just sounds so un-Red Wing like, doesn't it. :lookaround:
