sounds right.

no i love the wings i just think a fighter would add a new demension to the team

But how does that help them when the guy would be in the penalty box all the time? I understand having a guy who will stick up for your teammates but give me someone who can give solid minutes on the 3rd or 4th line too. A goon doesn't do that.

He just said "a" goon. Don't overdramatize.

McGrattan and Simon are both good options at this point. We can also try to trade Datsyuk for Boogaard, but I don't think people here will buy that trade.

So guys, what are the chances that this thread turns into an enforcer debate?

In the penalty box all the time?

You've been watching Slapshot too many times if that's your definition of a tough guy. Too much stereotyping going on there. Was Downey in the box all the time? As long as there's another player in the other team's box too, than it's all good.

Would you tell a Wings fan who said "I want my team to be current stanley Cup Champions" to become a Penguins fan?

No Downey wasn't but what else did he bring to the team? And he didn't even fight that much.

I love how oftentimes the same people who praised Cheli throughout his career with the Wings make the statement that the Wings can' aford a fighter because of all the penalties the fighter would take.

I prefer my toughguys with little offensive upside, and with the expectation that they will only play a few minutes a night. I don't want them thinking that their hands re too precious to risk injuring. I want them to play comparatively little, that gives more available time to guys who have better scoring touches.

I want a 4th line of specialists who do very little except what they excell at. Draper, Holmstrom, Downey - all of these guys have valuable skills, but I don't want any of them on the ice when their particular skills aren't needed.

You guys are getting my comment all wrong. I'm fine with the Wings getting an Enforcer, but a Goon is different than an Enforcer. I think that there isn't room on classy organizations such as the Wings for a Goon, but there is for an Enforcer.

He doesn't have to bring anything else. What did Kopecky bring? What did Maltby bring last year?

There's room on this team just for one tough guy. I don't think the OP suggested that we should have a team full of goons. It's better than chasing after Williams again.

We did sign Bertuzzi a few years back, who basically crippled a player and ended his career. I'm sure Holland signing a "goon" as you call it wouldn't be a big deal compared to that.

I'll take anyone that can throw and take a punch without ending up on the IR for half a season. I don't like the term 'goon' either, but I would enjoy as a fan to see some physical play 6-8 minutes a night in the regular season to go along with our massive collection of skill players.

I'd rather have a guy on my team that had one lapse of judgement one time and is truly sorry for it rather than having a guy like Simon or Pronger or Ott (or even Tootoo) running around cheapshotting everything in sight and committing multiple offenses. That's my point. Yes, I think Bertuzzi is a bit of a goon because of the whole incident, but he is still better than a lot of other players.

But Bertuzzi, if healthy mind you, could still score. Not saying he was a classy player but he was not one sided.

Was that Chris Simon you were mentioning earlier? The guy who crosschecked Hollweg to the face one year and the next year stepped on Ruutu's leg with his skate as he was skating off the ice and was suspended 55 games between the two instances. How does that help the team?

Again I understand the argument but an enforecer is different. Joe Kocur and Darren McCarty could fight but gave you solid checking line minutes back in the day.

We brought in Ulf f'n Sammuelsson for f's sake. Derek Boogaard is far classier in comparison.

Simon is a more talented offensive player than Kocur ever was. He's not just some untalented thug.

Yeah he's had some dumb moments, but the guy just spent an entire season in the KHL. He's probably softened up from playing with euros all this time.

Of all the cheapshotters mentioned, the only one I wouldnt take is Ott because he's a dirty little rat. Tootoo would be a fan favorite here, same with Pronger, Bertuzzi was liked here before he got hurt, Simon would probably be hated because he's a tougher guy.

I'd love a tough guy too, but it's not gonna happen bud, dont get your hopes up.

I understand that and if he wasn't such a ****** with his antics I would be with you on that one. But in his case I wouldn't risk it.
