Will YOU play this season?

nobody plays hockey in ohio

Untrue, sir.

Probably won't be playing again this season (rec. mens league) due to budget constraints, I can't afford the $300.00 bucks

Ditto. My one regret is not playing in one of the adult league's here. Women play, and there are a ton of different divisions for every school level. Would have liked getting the wife to be my defense partner.

Pick-up here is only $5-$8, but the times are bad - during working hours or in the evenings from 7-11 pm... just like the adult leagues. Ugh!

I played High School on our school's varsity team...took 2 too many head shots and am now relegated to pick-up hockey and refereeing. I got a job as equipment manager for my university men's team this year though, i'm excited to get back into the groove of hockey, being at the rink 6-7 days a week. I really missed it when i stopped playing.

Why would you play sledge hockey? I mean it's good for physically disabled people but IF you can use your legs... Play real hockey. I've watched sledge hockey before and it honestly looks like it's frustrating and annoying... But hey, do as your own, I just want to know why you would choose sledge hockey over ice hockey? But hey, if you are handicapped, disregard this post.

As a matter of fact I was born with a heat condition, a back problem (curved spine) and a few feet problems I've had over 20 surgeries on heart, back and leg all togehter which impairs my ability to play full fledge regular hockey which is why I play goalie. I have never learned how to skate but teams have allowed me to play goal in shoes in Inline Hockey and winter boots in Ice Hockey. That is why I'm going to play sled hockey this season. Just so I can get into organized hockey again.

Yes I'd much rather use my legs and my entire body and if th Sled Hockey thing doesn't work out I'll play some other kind of special hockey with USA Hockey. I can understand how you may think Sledge hockey can be frustrating but it does look interesting and I've heard nothing but good things so far from the people I've talked to that have acutally played in or watched it for years.

Finland must be great then... To spend a whole day at any arena here (in Windsor)... The ice would have to be available, which is impossible, and if it was available, you'd have to rent it for boatloads of dollars.

Yeah, it's outdoors, next to football (soccer) field. Of course if you wan't to skate in indoors here, you have to make a reservation for the ice time I think. And then there's free icetime for everyone sometimes. But I just love playing outdoors, especially when there's something like -20 (celcius) and snowing. :D

I played for Brighton Highschool varsity. I was the assistant captain my senior year. Im pretty sure we finished ranked top 3 in the state every year. We beat Justin Abeldkaders team like 8-1 or somethin big like that when they were ranked number 2 and we were ranked number 7. and we won states in 2006

Now I play for a mens league team in East Lansing. Its real good hockey. On a side note - we got a few guys who graduated this year and we are looking for guys to take their place. So if you're in the area and youre actually GOOD - maybe we can see if we can get you a spot on the team. Its good hockey though so you have to be honest about your skill level and we'd wanna see you skate beforehand. We lost the championship last year on a 5-3 PK in OT so this year we're looking for revenge. Its cup or bust.

And on that subject, if youre in the Howell area - send me a quick note with your cell number. My buddy runs the Grand Oaks rink there and we're always having skates going from 8 at night till whenever we get tired. sometimes goes as late as 2am.

TJ Hensick is from here so if you dont mind skating with an Avs player its fun to go up against an NHLer. You can be as terrible as you want to come out and skate. No worries.

I played all throughout high school ('98-'02) and won 2 Big 9 titles in that 4 year span. But unfortunately I haven't played organized hockey since my senior year of high school. I would love to play still but with school and work I have barely enough time to sleep let alone play organized hockey. But If I ever win the lotto I will go back to doing nothing but playing and watching hockey all day every day. Ahhh how great life would be...

I was never any good. I laced up a few months ago in Hazel Park, it was at midnight and only me and two other people showed up so I just did a little bit of practice skating and shooting on an open net and realized a few things:

1) I suck worse now than before

2) I still have a sissy shot

3) I am horribly out of shape

I can relate, friend. I'll be skating in Sept. when the roller surface is removed and the ice arena returns to its normal state.

I, too, will suck horribly. I'll modify my lifting routine to include hockey-specific exercises (ahem, LGW) if I can find some routines.

I played in college and was known primarily as "the insane guy jumping in front of the puck" because I was by FAR the team's best shot blocker, and played both forward and D. Having kids has prevented me from doing much league play, but I still get pickup games now and then, and still have my speed on the ice. Actually, I am probably a faster skater now because I have actually worked on my skating technique instead of just pushing with all the power I could and losing 50% of it.

Speaking of lifting and working out, I'm gonna take this one step further. For those of you who do play hockey what type of training and conditioning do you do to prepare yourself for your playing season?? I spend at least 1 hour at the gym 6 out of 7 days. Usually it's more like and hour and a half to 2 and a half hours but it just depends on when I get there and how I feel. I my routine usually is one day of working on nothing but Cardio spending 20 to 30 minutes on the Tread Mill, 20-30 on the reclining stationary bike and about another 20-30 minutes on a regular stationary bike. Than the next day I work on nothing but upper body. However I always do a 20 Minute Cardio warm up and a 20 minute cardio cool down but when I work on upper body I work on arms and abs. Than the next day I work on lower body doing leg training.

I just try to keep that same routine going every day that I go if work gets in the way than I adjust the way I need to but I have a treadmill in my basement and some free weights, barbel weights, an Ab Lounge and a punching bag, and a speed bag as well that I will use if I can't get to the gym. On most days I'm on a below 2,000 calorie diet but on the Upper body work-out days I try to pack as much protein as I can at least what I'm supposed to have for my body weight. Just to help build muscle I will admit I don't have the 6-Pack abs but I do have a pretty strong core. I was in two forms of Karate a few years ago so I sometimes practice my karate and that can give me a good work-out as well.

I try to do it as much as possible without taking to many days off that way I'm still in as good of shape as I can be whenever I want to play Street or Ice Hockey. What all do you do to stay in shape for playing hockey??

What college did you play for? And what years? Just curious.

I played for Washtenaw Community College in 2003 (the first year they actually had a team) and 2004 (my last year there) because I was a slacker in high school and didn't get any decent scholarships, and although I was accepted couldn't afford to actually go to a "real" college. I've been looking into trying out for a lower level pro team; I just missed out on getting a spot at the Walleye camp due to how quickly it filled up. The only problem is that a lot of them don't pay enough to actually live on and would be a pay cut from my current job, which isn't exactly a bank CEO or anything.

Ummm, just for future reference, it's a little misleading when you tell someone you played college hockey and dont immediately say it was club hockey for a community college. Especially when you're talking about Washtenaw (funny you brought them up cause I start school there is semester, meant to try out but missed try outs [now that I look, maybe I've still got time, but I thought someone told me tryouts were early August]) for the simple fact that it borders Ypsi and well, majority of students there have probably played, say, basketball their whole life as opposed to hockey. Not trying to take antyhing away from you or your skill of the game. Just making a simple point. Afterall, there's a HUGE reason that Eastern Michigan doesn't have an ice hockey team!

Played in beer leagues until I was 48. Looked way worse than Chelios does. Had yet another knee injury and had to hang them up. Had a plastic and metal knee put in 3 years ago at 50 and Dr. said hockey was out of the question. I somewhat have to agree with him. I still skate on my pond 2-3 days a week in the winter and show up at a drop in once in a while, just to skate, but I can't play a serious game for risk of falling wrong and having to go through the issues of a knee replacement again. I will however, be helping coach my grandsons 2nd year of playing 8 and under. I still have a pretty decent slapper from the point, but I've practiced that for years against the side of the barn.
