b.shanafan14 733 Report post Posted September 2, 2009 (edited) Really sad to see him go. I always thought he was a good guy. Hard nosed and a great leader. stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted September 2, 2009 Why retire at 35 years old? What's the reason? probably just nothing left in the tank... playing that style of game takes its toll on the body, especially as a defenseman... 1 55fan reacted to this
skacore 2 Report post Posted September 2, 2009 Why retire at 35 years old? What's the reason? probably the same reasons as the other 999999999 NHL players who retired at that age 1 Hockey13Playa reacted to this

MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted September 2, 2009 Would be interesting to know the average retirement age, it must be over 35 atleast it feels that way.. probably closer to 37-38? anyone know? Probably lower than that considering all of the fringe players who leave the NHL in their late 20s and early 30s.
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted September 2, 2009 Just heard his interview with the Fan 960 Calgary (via their online player). That man was a warrior out there and his body got worn down like that of a warrior. Sounds like he suffered from the same kind of stuff as Holmstrom. 1 55fan reacted to this
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted September 2, 2009 Probably lower than that considering all of the fringe players who leave the NHL in their late 20s and early 30s. I agree with MacK-- the average age must be around 28-32ish. That would have to include players who "retire" from the NHL by moving to lower leagues permanently after having played many full seasons in the NHL (Feds and Jagr being two examples). Guest mindfly Report post Posted September 2, 2009 (edited) Probably lower than that considering all of the fringe players who leave the NHL in their late 20s and early 30s. Minimum of 500 NHL games then and only include retirement from hockey not to another league / lower league. MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted September 2, 2009 Minimum of 500 NHL games then and only include retirement from hockey not to another league / lower league. 400 games would be a better benchmark because that's the threshold to earn an NHL pension. mjlegend 155 Report post Posted September 3, 2009 Wow - I would've guessed those 2 would've been a match made in heaven. Quinn may have been harsher on him since he wasn't 35 at the time. Ironically, I think he'd be a good fit as a #6 defenceman on the Oilers under Quinn now. I think retiring at this age takes him out of their cap. Might he come back later under a new, one-year deal with someone needing a depth defenceman> He might have some sort of record last season for most minutes played without an assist.
