MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 Veteran goaltender Dan Cloutier, out of hockey last season, will attend the Detroit Red Wings' training camp (Sept. 13-15) on a tryout. http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/20...will_try_o.html

VM1138 1,921 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 I know he won't make the team, but just the fact that we invited him scares the living hell out of me. Are we that desperate in goal? I'd rather take Larsson or McCollum, unprepared and untested as they may be, over Cloutier.
GMRwings1983 8,794 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 So does this make him the best fighter on the team? Personally, I don't have a problem with him trying out. What if he plays great at camp and in the preseason and wins a job? That's how Cleary and Downey made this team.
sputman 1,268 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 he did play one game with the detroit vipers, and he played junior hockey in sault ste. marie. he must have a favor due from way back.
stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 what. the. f*** as someone else said, give me Larsson or McCollum with no experience before him... if it were a tryout for GR, THEN I'd be ok with it...
dats13 0 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 I must say he could do very well with the red wings D in front of him. But not sure some people just suck...
cjm502 165 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 Im all about standing up for new guys, but Cloutier? If he does well during the tryout than good for him. If Howard does not play well we have some depth who might and has experience. Who knows, he could be a late Tim Thomas. Also, if he does make it does this mean we have to make a trade? KrazyGangsta 79 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 I think this move was made just to give Howard some "competition". That's exaclty why Cloutier is here.
Z and D for the C 712 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 If he beats Howard then he's better than Howard then we have a better goalie situationt han without him. I think I'd take him over Howard.
Jedi 1,865 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 I think this move was made just to give Howard some "competition". I agree. After the initial "WTF?!" moment, that was my exact thought too. Someone to show Jimmy that there are options, and you're not just given a spot on this team.

Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 BOY I'M SURE GLAD WE LET TY CONKLIN GO. The only reason why Cloutier is being given a try out is to push Howard for his job. That's it. If Conklin were here he'd have to already have been given a contract, further exacerbating the cap problem and dropping Howard's chances of playing down to near zero. Veteran try outs like this are intended to push the the fringe players to earn their jobs. That's it. The odds of Cloutier making the team are almost zero. He's here to push Howard and catch the attention of other clubs.
Booster313 138 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 "Well Jimmy, the good news is you won't be playing in GR this year, as a matter of fact just to show you how much faith we have in you, we went and signed the worst possible NHL goalie we could find to compete with you out of camp. Congrats Kid!!!" LMAO Howard has to be pissed, in fairness to Cloutier if he really does out play Jimmy then welcome the team and I guess we'll know that Jimmy was never meant to be an NHL goalie. Packer487 3 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 I guess Tim Cheveldae was unavailable. Or maybe they want him to be the backup so there will be a full season without a single goalie war on LGW!
Carman 387 Report post Posted September 5, 2009 Not a big deal. Just buying time til we hit the goalie jackpot with Pearce, McCollum or Larsson.
