I especially found this to be a good twisting of words/misguidance, the last sentence at least.

3. Speaking of the Olympics, one Red Wings player who won't be there is Osgood, despite a second consecutive strong postseason that many observers thought would earn him the kind of respect someone with his career stats deserves. Osgood needs only 11 wins to become the 10th 400-game winner in NHL history and he would have been a Conn Smythe candidate had the Red Wings won the Cup. His turnaround after being sent home midseason was impressive enough to fuel speculation he'd be invited to Team Canada's summer orientation camp because Red Wings executive Steve Yzerman is running the show and Babcock will be behind the bench. But Osgood wasn't among the five goalies invited to the camp, which seems to say something about the faith Detroit's brain trust really has in him.

Ah yes, another "The End is Nigh" for the Red Wings article -- one of these years they have to be right.

I wouldn't be too concerned that they invited Luongo, Brodeur, Mason and Fleury ahead of Osgood.

2. Sometimes you can have too much talent. OK, not really, but in the Red Wings' case having nearly half the regular roster potentially end up on national teams at the Olympics next February has its downside. Detroit is already the oldest team in the league, a factor some believe hurt the Wings when the Finals went to seven games in a compacted time frame. This season, the Olympic break means the regular season schedule will be even more compressed and grueling, which could catch up with the players if they get deep into the postseason again.

Yes, it was old age that caught up to them in the playoffs, and not an incredible rash of freak injuries resulting in 70+ man games lost to injury in the playoffs. If only Lidstrom was younger, perhaps his testicles would not have been hanging to his knees for Patrick Sharp to easily spear.

In all fairness age can have an impact on your ability to avoid injury and more importantly, to recover from injury. Not to say age was a factor in any of our injuries during the post season, some of which I am sure we don't know about. Just saying that it's pretty obvious that the older you get, the more games you play, the more wear and tear on your body can have an impact injury wise.

I don't get the age argument. Cheli is gone now, and even last year he barely played. So why is he that much of a factor? Lidstrom, Draper, Maltby, and Holmstrom are old. I'll give you that. But we have young guys coming up from the minors full time and our oldest player is gone. Yet we are still too old.

Are these things recycled year on year? We wont win because Osgood will have a mediocre regular season. He mustn't be very good as Yzerman and Babcock don't want him, I mean what are they thinking? They HAVE to choose their friend and teammate even though it could hamper their chances of a gold medal. JEEZ STEVE!

In all honesty Helm, Lieno, Abby etc are getting on a bit... I bet they can just feel the knees going.

And althought I'm a bit skeptical about him some of the time, Howard can bring it as a good solid backup (hopefully).

Sorry if I confused with my mix of sarcasm and honest opinion.

Of course -- but age had nothing to do with Lidstrom's injury. Tendinitis is another matter.

Ericsson did not need emergency surgery to remove his spotted liver - it was his appendix.

Lilja and Kopecky were not out of the playoffs because of calcium-deprived brittle bones.

Same for Datsyuk or Cleary.

Draper's and Holmstrom's injuries are not unusual for older players, but Rafalski's were more than can be reasonably be expected for an older player.

Every year the Wings don't win the Cup an article like this comes out. Its getting old. I like the people that say how OLD the Wings are. I remember in 2003 people telling me how old the Wings were and how 5 years from then the Wings would be the beat toys of the league. If winning the Cup means you're a beat toy, then yes.

 The season hasn't even started yet and people are already calling the Wings done. How many years have we heard this? Sounds like 2006 all over again.

Fleury? FLEURY? At no point in his career has he been a better goalie than Osgood. I agree on the other goalie invites deserving the nod, but not Fleury. His stats were terrible in the playoffs, unlike Ozzy, who dominated the last two playoff years.

Ozzy deserved the token invite out of respect. It's not like the #4 or #5 goalie invites will get to see the ice in Vancouver, anyway, so give a guy like Ozzy that nod out of respect for his career and achievements. I don't think it has anything to do with Babs, Holland or Stevie, though, I'd say it has more to do with Fleury's past history with Hockey Canada.

I definitely agree - but I'm sure it does not raise too many eyebrows to see Fleury in over Osgood.

I sorta wonder if Holland/Babcock prevailed upon Yzerman to ensure Osgood received rest and had no added risk of injury (Howard in the playoffs anyone?).

New season, same old s***.

I read this crap from Goldstein yesterday and it really pissed me off. Cap and Father Time. Wes must be still factoring in Cheli's age because the only over 35 players to start the season will be Lidstrom, Holmstrom, Draper, Maltby, and Osgood. Oh s***, the end is near!!!

Reporters just can't accept the fact that year in, year out, the Wings are there competing for the Cup. The Stars and Avs have come and gone. The Sharks are on their way down. And the Hawks have a one year window before cap hell settles on that team.

I think the Wings did a damn good job regarding the cap. . . Hossa and his bum shoulder are gone along with Kopecky. Sammy and his radar shot at a goalie's chest are gone. Hudler has his own situation to deal with. I like the Bertuzzi signing, but am still scratching my head on Williams. Ozzie will be fine this year, Wings will be a #1 or #2 seed.

We ought to send this article back following each win to Goldstein adding a team photo with the Cup in June.

I'm surprised Goldstein hasn't released his Power Rankings and have Detroit something like 10th, remeber, they're too old. . . what a moron!

Actually you make a great point there. Ozzy is one of those goalies who seems to conserve his regular season energy to dominate in the playoffs.

I'm totally cool with Ozzy only playing 50 games when he's the pushing the stat leader boards in the playoffs two years running.

Everyone knows the regular season is just a warm-up for the playoffs anyway. It's like the play-off preseason.

This article isn't even accurate. The Wings aren't the oldest team in the league.

The Wings could dress a team full of 19-year olds and people would still say they're old.

I guess it's just because in many teams the stars are the youngest guys (Crosby, Ovechkin, Kane, Nash etc.) and the support players are veterans, while in the Wings the stars are usually a bit older while the support is (often) younger.

And of course a lot of people think that once a player hits 30 he magically loses all skill and speed.

And about Ozzie: if he was selected for the Olympic squad everyone would be saying that it was just because of Yzerman and Babcock running the team (like some said about Cleary), and now that he wasn't selected they are saying that the Wings brass don't have any faith in him. Total Catch 22.
