topsideplaya 0 Report post Posted September 27, 2009 Since Cheli seems like he never wants to retire from playing I came up with an idea to keep him in the wings system and for him to keep getting a paycheck doing what he loves. Why not sign him to a 2-way contract to play for Grand Rapids? He could do some serious mentoring to Kindl and Kolosov. Kindl especially needs work on his defensive game and who better to teach that then one of the best d-man to ever play? I mean seriously what's the difference between having Janik or Chelios? Neither one will ever suit up for the Wings this year but at least I would rather those young kids learning from a legend then Delmore or Janik. I really have no idea how much minor league players make but I'm sure it's a decent amount.
rage 24 Report post Posted September 27, 2009 He says he wants to stay in the NHL. Wings need to be calling up those kids you speak of instead of Chelios. 2-way deal just doesn't make any sense for Chelios.
Lamothe 5 Report post Posted September 28, 2009 (edited) He says he wants to stay in the NHL. Wings need to be calling up those kids you speak of instead of Chelios. 2-way deal just doesn't make any sense for Chelios. He claimed he'd take a deal with the Chicago Wolves if the NHL plan didn't pan out, and when last I heard he eliminated Europe as an option. Another player did this... Eric Weinrich. When he couldn't cut it in the NHL, he played in Vancouver's and Philly's system for 2 or 3 years as a player / assistant coach. I like the idea, but I doubt Cheli would go for it. Carman 387 Report post Posted September 28, 2009 I really think people overrate Chelios' coaching and leadership overall. I mean he was a hell of a player, great defensive mind and a physical phenom but I haven't heard other players compliment his mentoring which is something you usually see in players like him. BigWillieStyle 662 Report post Posted September 28, 2009 Doesn't Jiřà Fischer work with the defensemen? Wasn't he mentored by Chelios? I recall his saying several times about all the things he learned while being paired with Cheli. I'd love to see Cheli in GR but Kenny has pretty much stated loud and clear, there is no room for him in the Wings system. Enjoy retirement Cheli. It's been a joy watching you all these years. Many players have credited Chelios with being a good and steady influence on their play over the years. He was Captain of the Chicago Blackhawks and widely respected as an excellent leader. Just last year some of the guys (including Ericcson I think) were praising him for helping them out. Chelios is a born leader and I don't know if he'd be a good head coach (there's no way of telling until a person actually coaches) but he'd be an excellent defensive coach. I really have no idea how much minor league players make but I'm sure it's a decent amount. It's not. The minimum is around $40k and the average is proabably $70-80k. This is "okay" money, but you have to remember that these guys can only earn this salary for a relatively short period of time compared to an average person out in the work force. This is why players that feel their chances of making the NHL have gone choose to go to Europe.

Jake Ryan 1 Report post Posted September 28, 2009 Chelios is going to end up behind a microphone somewhere. If you really think he's going to fade into some position in the organization that isn't in some kind of spotlight, then you're fooling yourself. He needs attention. Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted September 29, 2009 Plus, he can teach Kindl to be a greasy cheapshotting dirty f***, who fights sometimes and plays physical. That I would like, he's got skill, but we dont need any more wussie defenceman, more guys like Ericsson please
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted September 29, 2009 I'm not sure why people like the idea of Chelios as an assistant coach. Playing ability and coaching ability don't really crossover. Gretzky proved that great players don't necessarily make great coaches. There are a handful of good coaches that were good or great players, but the majority of coaches didn't succeed at the NHL level since doing so doesn't provide a coach with anymore coaching ability. Lovin Jiri Fischer 147 Report post Posted September 29, 2009 Even if Chelios does to go to play for any other team what is he gonna do with his two Cheli's Chilis? I think he should be a conditioning coach for the Wings because he is insane at working out.
