Ok, so my Fantasy Hockey draft is tonight and as my third Goalie Pickup i want to pick Torontos Gustavson.

heres my issue: HAS HE IN FACT beat out Joey McDonald for the #2 spot (now given, he should have already beaten out Vesa Toskala for the #1.....seeing as how poorly Toskala has been in the past few seasons and the HYPE with gustavson)

ANDDD.....for those of you who have never seen this "MONSTER" play, go to youtube and enhoy goaltending at its best!!!!!

HE IS A HUMAN HIGHLIGHT REEL

If the Leafs made a decision based on only pre-season, Gustavsson would probably be starter with McDonald as his backup. Toskala has been terrible.. and this is supposed to be a bounce-back year for him.

Personally I think he'll split games with Vesa 50-50 for a few months until Gustavsson becomes the #1.

He will be the number 1 goalie around christmas time maybe even earlier, count on it.

This. Maybe a 50-50 with Toskala, granted that they both stay healthy. If they make it to the playoffs though, it will be because of the Monster, and he will be backstopping them in it (ala Steve Mason).

Joey MacDonald was placed on waivers today.

Gustavsson starts as the back-up, but I really question for how long. He'll likely get a few extra games to start the year (than a normal back-up load) because he's only played a combined total of one game since the rookie tournament.

He's a rookie goaltender in the NHL. 99% of the hyped rookie goalies can't steal the starter's job. The ones who do steal it from rotten goalies like Toskala, true, but this kid hasn't played a full season of NA hockey. He'll hit the wall in January like nearly every European import does in their first year. This kid could be real good, but I can't bring myself to buy the hype on rookie goalies.

Price anyone? A good rookie year then he fell into a pit of mediocrity (and that's being generous). Anyone seen his stats this preseason? Yikes.

The difference there could be that Price joined the Habs when he was what, 19?

Gustavsson is 24, he's probably a little further ahead of the curve compared to your average rookie netminder. That said, he's nothing until he's proven that he's for real.

So true, people seem to be forgetting that he's not some 18-year old coming straight out of juniors. He is a mature guy that has worked extremely hard to become the goalie he is today.

He's only really unproven to people that haven't seen in him the SEL. I know the NHL is a much better league than the SEL, but the way he played last year was so awe-inspiring that I can't see him being anything less than atleast a very, very solid goalie in the NHL. He has all the components to become one of the best in the league; size, atleticism, speed, mental strenght etc.

He just has to tighten up his rebound control and he's set.

Go for it. Toskala will lose the number job 1 shortly. The question is just how long Wilson and Burke will be patient with him.

I agree with you that he's definitely going to be father ahead of the curve. But my Dad's an old school Leafs fan so I've warned him not to expect Gustavsson to live up to the hype but to expect him to have a great shot at being a very good goalie long term. It takes a lot for me to be sold on a goalie and in this case that'll be a season where the Monster hits the NA wall and recovers like Larsson did last season.

Edit:

Hey, if Gustavsson falls apart tell Burkie we'll give him Howard and a pair of season tickets for the Monster. :D

How many games do they play in the SEL? What sized rinks do they use? How is the pace and physicality of the game different?

Every goalie who comes over should plan for an adjustment period.

EDIT: I'm not down on this kid-- I'd much rather him than Howard as our back-up because Gustavsson is at least an exciting unknown and neither would be trusted by Holland when it matters anyway :P. I just advise more tempered enthusiasm.

Yeah I know, like I said the NHL is a much better league. Faster, more skill, more people around the net etc.

But having seen what Lundqvist looked like in the SEL and how he did when coming over, I have a feeling that there's not going to be too much of an adjustment period for Gustavsson.

Of course I don't think he'll put up the crazy numbers he had last year (like 1.03 GAA in the playoffs), but judging by his preseason I think he is ready to step right into the action.

Btw, they play 50 games in the SEL. Gustavsson played 42 games I think last year, plus 12-13 games in the playoffs. So if he becomes the starter it's definitely going to test him physically like he hasn't really been before.

I don t agree with your last statement. The contradiction is in what you said. If he had already a total of 54 games last season, do you really think he will see more than that in Toronto? It s almost a safe bet to say no: He will share the duties with Toskala and Toronto for sure won t mak a long run in the playoff if by any chance they can do it.

Drake Marcus is right; every goalie has to make a transition, but not because the pace is different or because they will see more games, but mainly because the angles and thus the positionning are different on a bigger surface.

How did a thread about the Leafs upcoming young goalie (more or less) even have Howard mentioned in it... Oh wait...

Gus-Gus is going to make a splash here in the regular season just like the rest of the Leafs - the team is young and fast... Going to be fun to watch.
