Lilja's Status

He said its a "hard" way to make a lving. Slightly different to lousy.

I'd say pretty drastically different that lousy - there are MMA fighters making a hell of a lot less, for a hell of a lot more damage... most hockey fights result in little worse than a broken nose or a few bumps and bruises....

From MLIVE:

Red Wings defenseman Andreas Lilja still battling through post-concussive headaches

By George Malik

October 19, 2009, 7:15PM

Red Wings defenseman Andreas Lilja's post-concussive headaches have yet to subside, and he told the Free Press's Helene St. James that he's begun making a commute to Toronto for an alternative therapy in hopes of a breakthrough:

October 18, Detroit Free Press: "I just went for acupuncture, for everything - hips, back, shoulders," he said. "It feels a little bit different, but, pretty much the same."

Lilja said he is still experiencing headaches.

"My patience," he said, "is really being tested right now. But, I just have to wait it out. There's not much really I can do."

Lilja, who also went to Sweden with the Wings, is joining them on their upcoming trip out West because there's a specialist he wants to see during one of the stops.

So lets say Lilja does come back this season... say a couple months before the playoffs and he puts forth a fairly decent effort, but he isn't nearly as effective as he was prior to his injury.

Would you resign him in the offseason?

How much would you resign him for/how long?

I hate to say it, but I think he's done.

Hypothetically, if he were to come back and have a quality couple of months of getting back into game shape and had a decent showing in the playoffs, I'd sign him for a year at maybe $750,000. I know that would put him at a lower salary than Ericsson for next season, but unless he came back with a stellar showing... I think with all the question marks surrounding him I wouldn't see him worth much more. Show some loyalty to him and some sympathy to his situation, but with the patience we've had with him, expect the same from him.

Red Wings' Andreas Lilja doesn't expect to come off long-term IR anytime soon

By Ansar Khan

October 19, 2009, 10:55PM

DETROIT -- Detroit Red Wings defenseman Andreas Lilja sits on the bench in full gear near the end of practices as a spectator. After teammates are done with any drills involving contact, Lilja takes the ice to try to maintain his conditioning.

Out since Feb. 28 with a concussion, nothing has changed. It does not appear he will come off the long-term injured reserve list anytime soon.

"Got to get rid of the headaches before I start doing anything major on the ice," Lilja said.

He is looking forward to accompanying the team on its upcoming road trip, which begins with Thursday's game at Phoenix. Lilja will see a doctor there.

"It helps me stay positive," Lilja said. "I love these guys. Of course, it's more fun to be around than to sit at home when the guys are on the road."

What is it with the wings and bad luck with defensemen? Konstantinov, Fischer and now maybe Lilja :ranting: :ranting: :ranting:

Please get well Lilja and don't end up on the heap of our other guys.

I wouldn't put Lilja in with Vlady or Fisch, but yeah, we're not lucky in that department. I mean why couldn't it be Kopecky? *sigh*

I really hope we're done with the tragedy. Don't forget Grigoranko-- he went from WJC MVP to shattered femur to blood clot in the lungs to narrowly surviving death to bust on us. :(

Its weird they dont seem to be able to do any kind of surgery or help him in any way.. "just have to wait it out" didn't he have like a blood cloth in his head that was causing the pain.. is it still there?

My best-case scenario? He's ready to play in Feb./March, gets his game back in time for the playoffs, and Ericsson gets to play with a solid, stay-at-home defenseman instead of Lebda.

In any event, it's certainly good news.
