Our Shootout Struggles?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

After watching each game this season, I honestly feel that our poor record (4-4-3) is no reflection of how we have played in those games. From blowing 2 goal leads in Sweden, to racking up 45 + shots in games and still losing, I think that things are going to turn around. Its so easy to speculate, but if Osgood saved Aucoin's OT Muffin in Phoenix, and if our usual shootout success was with us this year, we would be 7-4.

But that begs the question, what the hell is going on in the shootout this year? Last night Datsyuk's effort was embarrassing, Williams looked like Jason Allison (as a leaf) and Zetterberg telegraphed a wrist shot right into Khabibulins glove. I know we have only seen 2 shootouts this year, but were 1-6 in them, and our only goal wasn't very convincing (J will vs Colorado).

What do You guys think?

They're also missing Hudler's SO abilities and Franzen's right now - Z is an amazing player, but not your best SO option - in a perfect world, we'd go Datsyuk, Williams, Franzen and we'd be ok... until he gets back - Datsyuk, Williams, Cleary - just my opinion though...

Shootouts are kind of an anomaly and still deciding a team game by individuals - I still think the league should switch to a 3pt game system...

3 pts for a win in regulation or OT

2 pts for a SO win

1 pt for a SO loss

In my opinion stop letting the stars take the shots until they want to show some creativeness. Honestly Dats almost had him 5-hole. Z's was bad. If we let Eaves shoot or Helm, we are looking at a win. I very well could be wrong but hot hand gets the shot. They may not be superstar goal scorers but that probably helps in a shootout. Shootouts are 50% luck.

Assuming what you say is true...then the other 50% is skill. Wouldn't you want to put your highest skill player/factor to offset the unquantifiable factor of luck? Just my opinion, but I go with the proven skill everyday of the week on the SO.

Shootouts are nothing but a gamble. Honestly you are doing no better throwing Datsyuk vs. anyone else barring a few exceptional shoot out scorers. It wouldn't hurt using someone else in the shootout, but it's definitely not sending a good message to your actually paid skilled players to not get the chance. Datsyuk has one of the best %'s in the league, Williams has been good too, Zetterberg has been extremely clutch, I don't blame Babcock for his order.

I would definitely agree with you if our "proven skill" could actually come through. We are not a good shootout team period. Never really have been. We need to shake things up.

I get what you're saying, something needs to change with our approach on SO's....but when looking at how desperate the Wings are to come home from this road trip with POINTS...LIKE NOW....suggesting that you put Pattrick Eaves and/or Helmer over Dats or Z in the shootout is absurd. COME ON!!!!!!! If we were in firm control WC standing and just killing it....maybe....maybe one late night in Canada.

Well Zetterberg's never been an elite shootout guy like Pavel. Williams is known to be good in the SO but last night's effort was a bit weak. One problem is we lost a top 3 shootout guy in Hudler, which hurts us. Last night Bertuzzi would've gone 4th for sure, if we'd managed to get that far. Bertuzzi's been as hot as you can be without racking up tons of points. If posts counted as goals points he'd be leading the league in goals.

I can't blame Howard for the shootout loss, though-- he was strong in the SO... the shot that beat him was a perfect shot. He was also strong in the last 10 mins of the game and in OT. Too bad he took two periods to get his s*** together.

Helm or Eaves?!? The only time they're suited to a shootout is in the 11th and 12th round.

Well Williams has always been pretty good at shootouts, and so has Pavel... He obviously saw an opening in the 5 hole and took it, it just didn't get through... Zetterberg seems to kinda suck in the shootouts usually... but who else would you put? Bert maybe, he's got some shifty moves and a good shot... I would go Williams, Pavel, Bert

Bert's a good choice too - I still think Pavs shpuld go first - put some pressure on the other team

Pav, Bert, Williams

I dont blame Babcock for his shootout lineup as each of Williams, Datyusk and Zetterberg have solid career % in shootouts. That being said I am all for going with the hot hand. I knwo a lot of ppl will disagree but with the game Eaves had I would have seriously considered putting him in. Bertuzzi also looked dangerous last night. Although Zetterberg had a strong game last night he didn't look as dangerous, goal scoring wise, as Eaves or Bertuzzi so I probably would have switched him out for one of them and then had Zetterberg in mind to go fourth if thigns went that far.
