PROBIE4PREZ 58 Report post Posted November 4, 2009 Linky And finally, a lot of fans believe that Semin might give a "discount" to the Capitals. I wondered if this could become an issue in the negotiations. Gandler's reply was firm: "I don't believe in discounts." Backstroms going to want to get paid too. They will have roughly $35 million tied up into 11 players.. They arent in the same boat as the Hawks but close. Are the 10-15 year deals going to be offered to the likes of Semin Backstrom Kane Toews?
Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted November 4, 2009 They'll get signed just like Malkin and Crosby got signed. No big deal.

RedWings Gone Wild 6 Report post Posted November 4, 2009 Linky Backstroms going to want to get paid too. They will have roughly $35 million tied up into 11 players.. They arent in the same boat as the Hawks but close. Are the 10-15 year deals going to be offered to the likes of Semin Backstrom Kane Toews? Green's probably going to be due soon too, and if Varlamov takes the starting job, he'll be headed for big bucks.. I'm not sure how much Laich has left on his deal, but he'll be due for a huge pay raise too with the number of points he's been racking up the past two seasons. I could see them having to shed some cap, but at the same time the Caps have a very pro-European feel right now, and I could see guys like Semin and Backstrom taking a little less to get to stay in that environment. Not to mention, playing on a line with Ovie is like free points every night, I think you would see a big decrease in production from Semin and Backstrom if they were on a less talented team, so there is that motivation to stay as well. ComradeWasabi 109 Report post Posted November 4, 2009 Did you expect the agent to say his client's going to sign at an enormous discount rate? No.
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted November 4, 2009 They'll get signed just like Malkin and Crosby got signed. No big deal. The problem for the Caps is they have 3 legit top tier players-- Ovi, Semin and Backstrom. The Pens only had Malkin and Crosby. That third guy-- likely Semin, will be hardest to sign because Ovi and Backstrom will take up such a big chunk of the cap. That being said, I think they'd be crazy not to sign Semin. They have to sign Backstrom because he's a gifted playmaker and they need him to centre Ovi if they want to maximize the dangerousness of their first line. Semin is similar to their Malkin, though, and could break out and put up Malkin-like numbers in the next few years. Don't forget that he was leading the league in points last year before he was injured (and ended the year with a 1.37 point per game average, if I remember correctly). mmamolo 287 Report post Posted November 5, 2009 That fight is definitely hilarious. I think the thing about the Caps cap situation, when compared with the Pens as someone above mentioned, is that as good as Semin and Backstrom are I dont think either will see the type of money Crosby, Malkin or Ovechkin got. So at the end of the day the caps wont be spending way more on Ovechkin, Semin and Backstrom compared to pitts on Crosby and Ovechkin.

Semin is a sweet sniper but Backstrom has such a complete game and is an amazing player...plus, being a swede, he would fit right in!

Having slappy Semin on the Wings would further fuel opinions that the Wings are full of European *******.
Free_Candy 38 Report post Posted November 5, 2009 (edited) I don't know, the way things are going, I have a feeling that Semin won't be with the Caps long term. I could be wrong, but something just doesn't quite seem right with him, at least as far as doing a long term contract with the Caps goes. He's a hell of a player when he puts his mind to it, but lately from what I've gathered, he's been struggling quite a bit and fans have really been throwing him under the bus for taking lazy/careless penalties and not playing like he should. The name escapes me but one of his teammates indirectly called him out in an interview after losing to the Devils. Now I know he's very good friends with Ovechkin, but with some of the things going on added up and if some other team is willing to wave enough money at him and the Caps aren't willing to match it, something tells me he might end up playing somewhere else. I could definitely see Backstrom taking a discount and staying on long-term, though. Edited November 5, 2009 by Free_Candy

Most people thought there was no way the Pens could retain Malkin last year and they managed to sign him, so there's no reason to think the Caps can't retain Ovi and Semin... the big question is where Backstrom will fit in since he has to be kept.
