Fedorov: Red Wings were jealous

So, anyone still curious if Feds will get his number retired in Detroit?

I think everyone should take turns wiping their asses with the number.

There's confidence, and then there's overweening arrogance. Guess which category he falls into?

That party came and went in 2003. Too late!

You don't think he'll want another Hall-of-Fame Red Wings player in Toronto and on that ceiling of Joe Louis Arena?

Sergei Fedorov is not of the caliber player that currently has their number retired. Nor is he of the caliber player that Nick is, since he'll be next one to get immediate number retirement.

He had good years here, and we won some cups. The same could be said for a whole host of other players, that doesn't mean they're getting their numbers retired too.

He doesn't deserve it. Period.

Sergei Fedorov was the reason why I started supporting and liking the Red Wings back in the early 90s and he'll have to go pretty far to make me completely disregard that. However, this attitude is getting tiring and while I'm no longer anywhere near to being pissed off concerning these issues, well, a picture speaks a thousand words (and I'm hoping at least some of you will get it):

You're kidding, right? I'm pretty sure there was like a 7 year waiting list for season tickets at that time. Wait, I know there was a 7 year waiting list because a friend inquired about season tickets and waited until 2004 when he finally had the chance to purchase them. Give me a break, 3,000 people weren't going to see Anna. This is the NHL, not the god damn NBA where people go to see movie stars and supermodels instead of the game.

There was a 10 year wait list in 1994... I finally got my season tickets in 2004

I encourage anyone who hasn't done so to read the article the interview came from. Some of the things he said were sort of taken out of context by the freep article, and to me, it didn't sound nearly as bad. Also, it was very interesting to hear him talk about his defection from the Soviet Union.

I don't think Fedorov will have his jersey retired. People keep comparing Fedorov's contributions to Yzerman's and Lidstrom's, but theirs go so much further. Disregarding points and the like, what were his contributions? Was he a leader? Did he ever seem to have a real desire to stay a Red Wing? Did he embody the traits that we all like to think of as that of Yzerman or Lidstrom? Fedorov had the stats, but there's more to it than that in this organization.

What the hell, last time I checked he was the jealous one that wasn't getting enough attention by the media (always in Yzerman's shadow) and wanted to go to a team where he would be the one.

LOL @ Fed. it's like one of those relation ships that end which one part just can't let it go.

Fed + Red Wings = Brad Pitt and Anniston ... which Fedorov would be Anniston in this case.

Sweet, that means the Wings are banging Angelina Jolie.

LOL @ they broke up the Russian 5.

No offense there Sergei but the Russian 5 came to a tragic end because of the limo accident, that's no secret to the fans of this team or to him. The instant that Vladdy got hurt was the instant the Russian 5 ceased to exist and that's the end of that. Fetisov was ending the road in his career but ended up playing in 1998, of course, and I guess if Maxim Kuznetsov would have panned out in time and the Wings didn't go get Dominik Hasek for Kozzie in 2001 then maybe, maybe they would have all stayed together...I digress.

Point is, that's just silly of him to say. They stayed together through 1997, mainly on the power play, where they were deadly. Otherwise, Scotty just didn't use them as a whole as often because it made the team better to spread all 5 of them out and use them with other players. With the way 1997 ended up, and you could even say 1996 (had Yzerman not been hurt) Scottie knew what he was doing.

I think Sergei needs to thank Mr. I for getting him here, thank him for a great career, shut up and enjoy his $ that never would have happened without the Detroit Red Wings.

pretty much dead on. and when's the last time any of us saw any wings line together for more than 5 games? the grind line? holy s***! the wings name the lines that actually stay together. even dats - z - homer isn't together anymore, and that line worked...

I'm always suspect of these things with foreign players. There's a high likelihood that the translation has been misinterpreted.

Sergei says something in Russian that, when translated by someone fluent in Russian as a first language and not biased, translates into:

I have deep respect for the organization, but things just weren't perfect there. We argued at times over the direction of our team, and that probably hurt us a little bit more than if we had better chemistry like on the national team."

Then some other reporter fluent in english as a first language, decent in Russian as a second language, and wanting to create a stir for his own benefit, translates the article into:

"Fedorov unhappy with Red Wings. Says 'they screwed me.'"

And many posters have set it best = This time period is OVER.

I don't really know realistically how much better they could have done. 3 Cups in 6 years in this day in age is excellent. We'll never see teams win 4 in a row anymore.

Scotty would shuffle the lines all the time, so it's not like he only split up the Russian 5. Look at all the different linemates Yzerman had from 1995-2002.

I'm past the point of being pissed at Sergei.

38 former Red Wings players are currently in the Hall of Fame. If that's your only criteria for number retirement, then we're going to have to start using punctuation marks before too long. 38 HOF'ers, and only 6 of them have a retired number.

I'm obviously talking about players who played the majority of their career in Detroit. Not players that stopped for a cup of coffee.

To me, Yzerman and Lidstrom have set the current standard for jersey retirement. When you compare Yzerman's and Lidstrom's contributions against Fedorov's, then Sergei doesn't measure up. (And I'm not talking just about stats and awards won).

Then what are you talking about? I watched Fedorov for most of his career in Detroit. He seemed to bring it every night. Is Osgood's number being retired then?

If the current standard is those heart and soul, bleed Red Wings Red, exemplary career spent entirely wearing the Winged Wheel, while winning the hearts and minds of the fans. Then no, Fedorov does not meet the standard. Many of the fans still would boo Fedorov when he came back to the Joe. Do you really think Ilitch wants to retire the number of a guy who got booed on a regular occasion after he left?

If it were up to the fans, Fedorov's jersey would be retired.

The guy compared leaving Detroit to when he defected from the Soviet Union, for crying out loud. Even if that was all taken out of context, it still leaves a sour taste in many people's mouth. Put all these reasons together, mix in his holdout in '98, sprinkle a little of this article on top, bake at 350 degrees and it all adds up to 91's absence in the rafters, if you ask me.

Maybe, if Fedorov was negotiating his own contracts or demanded a trade or something, I could see that reasoning. But he wasn't. A player's contributions on the ice should not be canceled out due to contract negotiations of millions of dollars off the ice done by his agent.

And fortunately the amount it takes to have your number retired takes more than being a great player who played for the team for a solid number of years.

Fedorov does and did not represent Detroit hockey like Lidstrom and the rest of the retirees do/did. That in itself cancels out his skill.

Then what are you talking about? I watched Fedorov for most of his career in Detroit. He seemed to bring it every night. Is Osgood's number being retired then?

Not likely. Depends on how his next couple years go. Still unlikely.

If it were up to the fans, Fedorov's jersey would be retired.

Yeah, the same fans who boo him on virtually every opportunity, right?

Maybe, if Fedorov was negotiating his own contracts or demanded a trade or something, I could see that reasoning. But he wasn't. A player's contributions on the ice should not be canceled out due to contract negotiations of millions of dollars off the ice done by his agent.

Regardless of what his agent does, Fedorov has control of his salary and contract negotiations. This is a classic case of "the devil made me do it".

Sorry, there is no chance Feds gets his number retired.

What fans? Certainly not Detroit fans from the warm welcome he receives everytime he returns to the Joe.

The guy gets booed every time he has the puck, and he thinks he's gonna get his number retired here?

Welcome to another episode of "Faerie Tale Theatre".
