Bertuzzi SUCKS

I love these "articles" written by fans. They're hysterical. Though I don't know what in the hell the Free Press is doing spreading BS like that. I know the print-media industry is desperate, but this is just pathetic.

I think the writer has a point. There's a reason a guy like Holmstrom is so good next to Datsyuk and Zetterberg. He plays simple and rarely gives the puck away. When Z or Pav passes to Homer they can count on getting the puck back. Not so much with Bert, who will overcomplicate things and turn the puck over.

Bert makes a lot of simple mistakes. The last month or so he's been really bad and mainly going around taking stupid penalties.

Can you blame the entire season on Bert? Of course not. But it does feel like he doesn't quite fit in with the Wings puck-possession hockey.

He is making 1.5 million dollars. He is a goalie-view-blocker on the second PP unit. And he is good at overtime and the shootout (although not used enough). What exactly do you want from him?

More shots, OK, give him more time on the ice with Pavel and Hank, but I think he should be on the second line with Cleary and Flip, and I don't think he'll get as many chances to succeed with those two AND he has the 2ND MOST SHOTS ON THE TEAM.

He's not fast enough? Neither is Homer, and they are comparable in most stats but no one rails on him in every thread.

Doesn't use his size enough? He has the 5th most hits on the team.

He gives the puck away too much? Well, yes, he is 3rd in giveaways... behind Datsyuk and Rafalski. But he has a few more takeaways than Rafalski.

I don't know where he is really failing.

Exactly. This appears to be lost on most people. I think a lot of people want to see the Bertuzzi of old, early 2000s when he played for Vancouver. But he's not that player anymore and he's not paid to be that player anymore.

He currently sits 4th on the team in points and he's 1 goal away from the team lead in goals. The 3 guys ahead of him in points have an average salary of $6.8 million while he's paid $1.5 million. You have to go all the way to 10th in scoring on the team before you find a guy making less money.

No point in sugar coating it, if this team is going to be succussful, Datsyuk and Zetterberg need to score more.

Agree completely

Funny how Bert is so heavily defended. That's like someone forming a "Vote For Lebda" campaign because an amateur writer bitched about him. He used to be hated as much as Sammy and Lilja at their peaks.

The article brings up good points, and makes ridiculous ones at the same time. I just think alot of people here like to be contrary. Write an article badmouthing Bert, we'll argue against it. Start a topic loving Bert, we'll argue against you. We just like to criticize.

Though I agree on the streak of contrarianism, we're hating on this partcular article because it's just brutal. There are legitimate criticisms of Bert, and some of them are included in it. However, the article in question is loaded with hyperbole that completely devalues any legitimate evaluation therein.

I like Bertuzzi, but he is trying to play beyond his capablities. Once Homer/Franzen gets healthy he should see much less time in the top 6, especially the top 3.

He's not a top line player any more, I agree. But to say he doesn't help this team is completely ridiculous. He's played fine for what he is paid.

It shouldn't matter how much he makes. If he is getting top six minutes he needs to show some effort out there. Unless he has the puck on his stick with a chance to go to the net, he is a floater. He doesn't work hard in either zone, offensive or defensive. His stats may look ok for a 1.5 mil guy, but the amount you make shouldn't determine how hard you have to work.

In this day and age of the NHL, how much he makes does matter. If he is not showing effort and just floats around he won't be getting top 6 minutes. How hard he actually works the coaches can decide, and they are definitely not stupid or blind.

$1.5 mil....his stats is better than some $3 + mil players.

That's not the way I see it. For Bertuzzi to be effective he needs to play with skilled, top 6 forwards. The points he gets are great, but I feel with more effort in the corners and in our defensive zone, he can benefit and others can benefit. If he gets demoted due to lack of effort and is outside of the top 6 he is worthless, he can't put up points by himself. Weather a guy is making 1.5 mil or 6 mil, he should still be working hard out there at all times.

I think for ANYONE to be effective they need to play with skilled players regardless. He is what I expected... not great defensively and not as physical as before (he's not 25 anymore), but no way he is hurting the team. Yes I agreed everyone on the team should work hard. But I'm going to say again, the coaches knows how hard he actually works than any one of us here. Not many mid-30 players can play at this level, especially with his injury a few years ago. That itself tells me how hard he works and still loves the game.

I hate the way he makes tape to tape passes to open players on the other side of an empty net on the powerplay. Jeez, watch a beginners video will ya! You're supposed to shoot the puck at the net when you are that close to the goalie at an impossible angle. WTF IS WRONG WITH HIM!!!

yea that totally sucks, I also hate when he uses his size to hold a player off with one hand while controlling the puck with a free hand... just awful. He should be skating with a puck really fast as opposed to being slow like he is only to fall behind the net and let the opposition get it.... that's how things get done in the wings organization...
