Konnan511 1,736 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 (edited) Not really surprising and he deserved the 2 games. There should be a clause in the CBA stating your suspension starts once you're medically cleared to play. But oh well. Definately deserved a game or three, gladd the NHL had the balls to do it Edited December 1, 2009 by Konnan511

Carman 387 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 Good for the NHL. Finally suspending a superstar. Hopefully this teaches Ovechkin a message, he is too good to be doing this cheap s***.

Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 Make sense. But it's still utter BS that Richards didn't get a suspension for destroying Booth's skull. (no, I'll never let that go until I see more star players get this consistent treatment)

GSBrooks13 204 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 I could be wrong... But I dont think the suspension is for the hit itself.. Isnt there a rule about an automatic suspension if you get a certain number of game misconducts in a certain number of games?.. I believe Ovechkin had 2 game misconducts in 3 games. Do we really need to remind ourselves the NHL enforces it's "mandatory" suspensions for game misconducts whenever it bloody well feels like it? Stupid ******* Malkin... Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 Knee to Knees are in the rule book. Shoulder to head isn't. True, but didn't a Penguins player (Cook?) just get suspended for the same hit?
Rick Zombos Ghost 82 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 Laraque's was worse and he's been suspended before. Ovie's a repeat offeneder and he was suspended earlier this week........
Carman 387 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 True, but didn't a Penguins player (Cook?) just get suspended for the same hit? A few more players were suspended for similar hits after the Richards hit. The NHL wants to stop the hits to the head, but when the Richard's hit occured it was the first one and the NHL thought it would be best to wait until they add it to the rule book before they suspend people on the fly. But it's been far more prevalent then they probably assumed this year so they are starting to crack down on them before they officially introduce it to the rulebook. This is of course my take on the situation. For all I know Richards threatened to kill Bettman if he got suspended.
Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 Ovie's a repeat offeneder and he was suspended earlier this week........ He got a game misconduct earlier in the week. I don't think he was suspended then.

RedWingsRox 614 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 That's BS ... should be at least 5 to match Laroque's, he is a repeat offender. Oh well, if NHL won't get him ... somebody will next time he is on the ice.
syntax 359 Report post Posted December 1, 2009 Not as much as he deserved (3-4 games IMO) but I'm pretty impressed that the league even suspended him.

Doggy 130 Report post Posted December 2, 2009 Ovechkin is one of the most reckless players I've ever seen in my life. He'll his and/or someone else's career way short the way he plays. Probably both. I know Boudreau wishes he'd settle it down too.
edicius 3,269 Report post Posted December 2, 2009 True, but didn't a Penguins player (Cook?) just get suspended for the same hit? And amazingly, didn't receive any discipline for a knee-on-knee hit on Shean Donovan, who's out for the next 4-6 months. (And nope, not gonna let up on that. Annoys the crap out of me that the league didn't even review Cooke on that garbage.)
