Tigers are finished!

There's a good analysis here.

I agree that things could turn out well for the Tigers if Scherzer and Austin Jackson pan out (the Yankees obviously didn't think the latter would) and the Tigers can resign Verlander in a couple years (a bigger if after this trade). I wish they could have held out one more year, because several of the bad contracts are up after 2010 (Robinson, Willis, and Bonderman--although Bondo is more unlucky than bad).

But Granderson is still the type of player that you don't trade. He's a star in Detroit and a big part of the community. He'll be just another cog in New York. After trading Maybin and Jurrjens, I'm not sure the fans will forgive this one.

INDIANAPOLIS — From all indications, the Detroit Tigers have agreed to a three-team deal in which they’d send centerfielder Curtis Granderson to the Yankees and right-hander Edwin Jackson to Arizona.

The trade would reduce the Tigers' payroll by millions for the next few years. According to foxsports.com and cbssports.com, the deal would bring the Tigers the following four players, all young, low-priced and years away from free agency:

• Arizona right-handed starting pitcher Max Scherzer. In his first full big-league season, Scherzer went 9-11 with a 4.12 ERA. He throws hard -- 95-96 m.p.h. with movement. The Diamondbacks have had concerns about his durability and his ability to develop a third pitch to go with his fastball and change-up.

• Yankees left-handed reliever Phil Coke. He struggled with home runs this season: 10 allowed in his 60 innings. He was the Yankees’ No. 1 lefty reliever early, then fell behind Damaso Marte.

• Yankees minor league centerfielder Austin Jackson. He has never played in the majors, but he played this year at the top level of the minors, Triple-A. Jackson, who bats right-handed, has yet to develop as a power hitter. Would the Tigers play him regularly in center next season as a rookie?

• Arizona left-handed reliever Daniel Schlereth. His stuff is tremendous: a fastball up to 94 m.p.h., and a curve described as knee-buckling. At times, he has struggled to command his fastball.

The trade hadn’t been announced as of 3 p.m., apparently because Arizona officials hadn’t completed a review of medical records of the players they’d receive. In addition to Jackson, Arizona reportedly would receive right-handed pitcher Ian Kennedy from the Yankees.

Tigers management believes it must reduce the payroll for next season in part because the club will be hit anew by the economic woes of Detroit and Michigan.

young talent is unpredictable. Granderson was part of the nucleus of the Tigers, thats like letting go a Z or dats.

I am still in shock, and I cannot believe there is not a bigger uproar. :(

I want to murder D.D right now! HOW IN THE HELL DO YOU TRADE YOUR STAR OUTFIELDER! (mags is a shmuck, he doesn't count until he can play everyday, earn that stupid $18million bonus he got last season!)

I really hope this works out for the best. They picked up a lot of unproven talent today. I just hope its a rebuilding year. We will be shedding some much needed fat after this season. Big off season next year?

I wish curtis the best of luck, and success on a personal level.... his team can dive straight into the ground, right on to hell and i could careless.

*edit grammar*

your not the only one, but if it was a rebuilding year why would he trade away probably the two of the top 5 on the team?

i understand the frustration but I am not surprised in this move. Granderson & Jackson were probably the only players who had value in the market.

What else did you want the Tigers to do?? Last year was a fluke and the tigers had no business getting that close to a playoff spot. Do you really think this team would be better? That the divison wouldnt be better?

It is still Dombrowski's fault for even putting the Tigers in a position to have to trade Curtis. There is so much dead, expensive weight on this team and thanks to Dombrowski handing out pathetic contracts, we no longer have the face of the franchise.

They have a lot of dead weight in pitching thanks to DD. That's where all the money is going. To pitchers that don't even play.

And trading Granderson and Jackson who make nearly nothing compared to our pitching roster that can't even pitch in the bigs.

It's a joke. I realize that they couldn't trade Willis, Bonderman, Robertson, etc, but come on.....Jackson!!!

We needed to hold on to him. I would rather see Granderson go than Jackson. Granderson strikes out a lot and is probably overrated in all honesty.

And I think it's unacceptable to trade your All-Stars to the Yankees, much less any roster player to the damn Yankees. I hate them. This is just unacceptable.

And another thing timothy, I don't agreed w/ the bolded part at all.

The Tigers were playing well enough all year to win the division. It was their fault they blew it towards the end, but to say they had no business getting that close to a playoff spot is just ridiculous.

They blew it in the end, plain and simple. They had every right to be that close.

dude, neither team in the twins and the tigers got to 90 wins. That almost never happens with a divison winner. What did the Twins do in the playoffs?? Oh yeah, got swept right out. Face it neither team deserved to be in the playoffs and sadly 1 team did.

Do you really think those tigers minus Polanco, Rodney, Lyon would be as good as the 2009 team. Oh and if they had the same season this year as last, they probably should be 5+ games out in the divison race.

The Central is so terrible that even taking Grandy, Jackson, Polanco, and maybe Lyon, Rodney, and Laird out of the lineup still doesn't necessarily remove the Tigers from contention. I'm not saying it's likely the Tigers win the division, but it's not like anyone else has improved.

I like Jackson a lot, but I can see that move making sense. The Tigers might be convinced his great first half was something he can't do with consistency and traded him when he was at the peak of his value. And Arizona absolutely got fleeced in this deal.

But trading Granderson is like the Wings trading Draper 10 years ago. Both were very good players, but their value extends well beyond the game to the fans and the community and doesn't translate in a trade.

I'm not sure the Tigers are any better than the Royals or Indians now.

No depth in the starting rotation, no bullpen (assuming one or both of Lyon and Rodney leave) and one legitimate bat in Cabrera.

The White Sox have put together a solid off-season and have Peavy for an entire year now. They are the only team that can give the Twins a run for the division.

I don't mind trading Edwin Jackson - I think it's most likely that his excellent 2009 season was a one-shot deal and we traded him at the height of his value. Granderson, on the other hand......never been so upset to see a Tiger leave. Seems silly to have a "Who's Your Tiger?" advertising campaign (which was wildly successful, IMO) and then trade the guy who everyone picks. It sucks even worse that he's going to the Yankees. And we get back from the Yankees a guy who might be as good as Granderson eventually. Or might not.

One thing's for sure, it doesn't make us better for 2010.

I find it hard to question DD with the moves he has made and the success he has achieved with the Tigers organization but IMO he better get this one right. Getting Polanco, trading Joyce for Jackson, drafting Verlander, Granderson, Porcello, not trading away Inge, getting Cabrera...the list goes on and on with what he has done for this team and I think the tigers were getting a bit stale, they were too loyal to a lot of Tigers who in fairness, should be gone (Ordonez, Robertson).

In other words this trade and future trades this offseason are going to either earn him praises or get him fired. 2010 is a wash with all the young talent but 2011 this team better compete for the divison title.

For every good move DD has made, there is an equally bad move.

Handing out bad contracts to Willis, Robertson, Guillen. I won't include Bonderman or Maggs because one is just unlucky and the other proved his value. The Sheffield trade bombed. I love Miguel Cabrera, but the Tigers are wasting his talent surrounding him with nothing in the batting order. We lost our two best prospects (Miller and Maybin) in an already depleted farm system. Jurrjens for Renteria was the absolute worst deal and now throw in trading the face of the franchise for a bunch of pieces.

I am very sour on Dombrowski right now. One magical season since 2001 is his only saving grace. If the Tigers goal is to clear salary to keep JV -- not being competitive isn't going to keep him around. Losing Granderson is one thing, losing JV will cripple this franchise.

Dombrowski=Millen. Trading Granderson would be like trading Z in a year or two if he has an off season. I am a lifelong Tigers fan but am uninterested until DD is gone. I also think baseball will have to be reformed soon so that teams like the Yankees and Sox don't wind up in the end with all the other teams' hard work and development. What a joke - how many players have the Tigs given away to the Yanks? The no salary cap in baseball in 10x worse than the NHL ever was. I cannot take the sport seriously anymore except for pure entertainment - it really doesn't matter who wins in the end. The only thing I can do as a fan is stop giving them any of my money - easy enough.

Really sad for Tigers fans everywhere. Fire DD! He can go hang around with Millen on TV....

I will admit that Granderson was one of my favorite players and is a hell of a ballplayer, BUT you need to look at production. I think the Tigers are looking for a little more production to the leadoff spot. He his just .248 and less than .200 against lefties. That puts the entire team in a hole a lot of the time because he just wasn't getting on base. He has never hit lefties well at all, and I guess they were thinking that they would never be able to get as much value for him as they can right now, so why not replenish the system a bit with MLB ready prospects in a top CF prospect and some much needed bullpen help.

Yes, this trade really hurts because he is a fantastic player and person, but you need to look at the business part of it too and realize that the Tigers may be starting to build a better team because obviously something wasn't working the last couple years.

SERIOUSLY?!?!?!? This post is a load of $**t. To compare DD to Millen is insane. Millen left the lions worse then he got them and the team was never any good during his rein. DD has brought the Tigers back to them forefront. DD has made trades that have worked, acquistions that have paid off. The problem with the Tigers is the team has gotten stale since the World Series run. Do you know how much money is tied down to dead arms like Willis, Robertson, Bonderman?? That is one of the reasons why the granderson move NEEDED to be done. Not that it should be done, NEEDED to be done. No one wants Cabrera, tigers werent gonna part with Verlander, and no one else had any value in the trade market.

As far as the Yankees and Red Sox complaint, I am with you but nothing can be done. Baseball is what it is and you can either accept it or not. Sounds like you made your decision and the Tigers organization is better off without fans like you. Enjoy getting off the bandwagon.

As for me, i hope these moves pay off for the Tigers. I really do. iI am actually looking forward to this upcoming season. See if taking a step back this year will pay off in the future. Let us not forget that DD took the Marlins from a world series title, broke the team down to its core and rebuilt a team to win the world series.

GO TIGERS!!
