Ideal Winners of the Night (Non-Red Wings Games)

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

Thought it would be fun to create a thread where we could 1) discuss other games happening around the National Hockey League, and 2) take a look at which teams winning or losing would be the most beneficial to the Red Wings' race back to the playoffs. Let's begin:

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Tampa Bay Lightning (W) at Chicago Blackhawks

Calgary Flames (W) at Colorado Avalanche

Detroit currently sit four points back of the division-leading Chicago Blackhawks, meaning a Tampa Bay victory would tighten the race for the Red Wings. In Colorado, the Avalanche sit tied with the Flames at 42 points a piece, but the Avs, having played three more games than the Flames (and 2 more than the Red Wings) are a much more realistic hurdle for the Red Wings to overcome as they attempt to battle their way into the post-season. We're looking for a Flames victory.

With any luck, we'll also get a playoff berth so that cute little newborn has something to watch late spring.

We don't deserve the position we currently in the standings. BUT I DO believe that once we get our all injured players back we'll see a deadly wings team !

Nashville Predators at Columbus Blue Jackets (W)

Los Angeles Kings (W) at Vancouver Canucks

With only four Western Conference opponents (outside of the DET-PHX game) in action tonight, it's likely we will see limited movement in the standings. However, in Columbus, while both teams are divisional opponents, a Blue Jackets victory would help the Red Wings (who sit a mere two points back of the Predators) in their climb to overtake Music City.

Meanwhile, in Vancouver, the Canucks invite the first-place Kings for a cross-divisional match-up. A Kings drubbing would help to widen the gap between the Red Wings and the Canucks, who are hot on Detroit's heels in pursuit of a playoff spot.

It's a tough choice between Nashville and Columbus because a Jacket's win just closes the gap between all three teams. No three-pointers. That point the Wings gave Nashville the other night may come back to bite us.

Exactly. Its tough to say right now if Columbus or Nashville will finish better this year so I just hope it doesn't go to overtime.

Also, this whole fighting for a playoff spot makes the regular season a lot more interesting. As a fan I think its ALMOST more fun this way

Los Angeles, Nashville, and Columbus on the second half of back-to-backs. Could be good for their opponents. St. Louis and Minnesota are a way back of the pack, but the Oilers are only five back of the Wings so a win for them just tightens the race. I actually don't like that the Capitals are first in the league and wouldn't mind seeing them lose, but the Wings could actually overtake some of the top four teams, like Colorado, if things remain bunched up as they are.

If one of the Red Wings wanted a playoff birth, the ideal time for conception by their partners would have been in the area of late August to late September of last year. Of course, the window would be larger or smaller depending on how far the Wings advanced into the playoffs.

St. Louis and Minnesota both win, giving the Wings an opportunity to get closer to Calgary and pull farther away from Columbus. Also, Washington is beating Colorado 3 to 0 in the second. Edmonton is behind LA by one goal halfway through the second period.

Good on Nashville to keep things competitive, though.

Eventful night tonight.

3rd place Chicago vs 14th place St. Louis- Chicago could jump to second place with a win, and St. Louis could jump to 11th.

9th place Dallas vs EC Carolina- Dallas could reclaim 8th place from the Wings tonight with a win.

7th place Phoenix vs EC Toronto- Phoenix could increase the distance between themselves and 8th place tonight.

15th place Anaheim vs 10th place Vancouver- An Anaheim win would keep Vancouver out of a playoff spot. If Vancouver wins the Wings bump down to 9th (10th if Dallas wins also).

Go Blues!

Go Carolina!

Go Toronto!

Go Anaheim!

Most importantly no 3 point games

Anaheim badly outplayed Vancouver in the 1st and limited them to 2 shots but as luck would have it, Hongcouver scored on their 2nd shot. 1-1 in the 2nd. Let's go Ducks! (I feel dirty)

EDIT: Ducks win 3-2. There were 2 horrible non-calls by the refs in this one. First one was a clear boarding by Kesler on Perry and the second one Niedermayer got mugged about 15 feet away from the puck and it created a 2-on-1 with just a couple minutes to go. Either way, Ducks win and 8th place is all ours for now. Time to gun for higher places.
