Detroit -- The news on Jonathan Ericsson was as good as could be expected for the Wings.

Tests revealed a deep bone bruise on his left knee and in his calf muscle, but no structural damage.

"What I've been told is that he'll be out a minimum of two weeks, but we will know a lot more in a week or so," general manager Ken Holland said.

Ericsson was injured Monday on a check from Phoenix captain Shane Doan in the first period.

Holland said the Wings will recall Doug Janik from Grand Rapids to replace Ericsson.

"Janik has the ability to kill penalties, and Jonathan Ericsson was eating up a lot of minutes on our penalty-kill," Holland said. "We needed a guy with the same ability to eat up those minutes."

Janik, who has played in one game with the Wings this season, had 15 points and a plus-10 rating in Grand Rapids.

Darren Helm, who has a strained tendon in his wrist, will be evaluated again Wednesday. He could play Thursday against Tampa Bay.

Great news! The Wings won't want a member of their top PK tandem gone for months.

I think Janik will do just fine in the PK department while ericsson is gone, imo he's always been a bit overrated on this board. The good PK got alot to do with a certain #17 and #23 down low among others.

Honestly, I'm beyond shocked this wasn't worse news. The way he got hit and went down, I thought it was likely his season.

Sidenote: The following people deserve their respective tomatoes. :P

no need to panic

we've got janik

:tomato:

When our options dwindle

then we'll use Kindl!!

:tomato:

Then when he drops to the floor

We'll just call up Delmore!

:tomato:

Oops! He pulled a tendon

Here comes Smith, Brendan

:tomato:

I definitely thought it would be worse. Great news.

The only thing that SLIGHTLY worries me is that all of these players are going to be returning at once, is this going to cause an adjustment period where they get back into playing form? Lets hope not!

This is the toughest Wing team since the late 90's.

May, Janik, Bertuzzi, Newbury.

Too bad Lilja isn't around, or else we'd be a full blown goon squad.

C'mon, don't leave Abby out of the mix!
