Old Time Mickey, from what I consider to be one of the more memorable Wings series in my lifetime.

That first video was awesome. It was only a series win and they were celebrating like they won the cup. Players these days seem stale in comparison and the interviews weren't the orchestrated kind we've become accustomed to.

Mickey is amazing he can say pretty much anything random and no one will say anything. "They're getting so liberal with these calls they're practically in the socialist party" He's like Hockeytown's crazy grandpa.

I don't mind him calling out the refs because he's pretty much always right, but sometimes talking about the old wood sticks can get slightly annoying. Other than that he's great. :D

Mickey is the best hockey personality next to Don Cherry.

Because of Mickey, I always refer to my friends as "gang" and I always tell my imaginary telestrating crew to "hold it right there" !!

1. Mickey Redmond

2. Bob Euker

3. Don Cherry/Madden

You nailed it. I am very lucky to have become a BRewers fan and a Red Wings fan as a young child. I'm very fortunate that I was able to grow up with Euker and Redmond as part of the soundtrack of my life.

As a Red Sox and Red Wings fan I am blessed to get to hear Redmond and Jerry Remy.

Rem dog and Redmond remind of each other in the fact that their understanding of the game is so deep, but they are able to also express that knowledge to the most common of fans, and still the broadcast great for die hard fans.

Conversely in Boston we have Tommy Heinsohn (Celtics announcer), don't get me wrong the guy is a legend in the sport and the town of Boston, but all he does now is complain about how the game is different from when he played (the: in my time or in the old days that wouldn't have happened blah blah) or it is about the horrible officiating. Listen everyone knows how bad officiating is in the NBA Tommy, we get it let it go for a second or two, He literally has to turn his mic off and not say anything for a couple of seconds now, you can hear him sighing sometimes, but the league, the team, the network, someone had to say something to him, because it has become a noticeable pause when he wants to complain. And right now silent Tommy is better than talking Tommy!

Tommy is getting old and the whole broadcast you can hear him breathing with whistling snots and that I smoked cigarettes for 50 years breathing. (Although the guy they are grooming to take over, Donny Marshall , all he does is complement UConn players, no matter what they do, they are saints because they went to UCONN)

Remy and Redmond are the type of broadcasters that when they speak up you listen, because odds are what they are talking about is going to happen in any minute. Where as a lot of announcers can only tell you about what just happened, they don't have the foresight or the ability to turn their knowledge to words.

If Mickey says, watch how they keep entering the zone they are setting it up to do X, you better watch to see how long it takes for X to happen. I will never forget when Remy called a Carl Crawford steal of home two pitches before it happened, he was commenting on his lead, for two pitches he kept saying, watch him, he is going, he is waiting for the right indicator. Sure enough the first off speed pitch, boom he successfully stole home. Redmond to me is that kind of announcer. He also has an undying love for the game (like Remy) and you hear the longing to play (at least I do) still in his voice. Certain athletes will always play for the love of the sport, and when they can't will long for it everyday it is gone!

Good color men are very hard to find, and these two in my mind right now are two of the best.

And with the advent of the internet I get to hear Mickey a lot more often, and every once in a while for s***s and giggles I listen to the opposing announcers and holy s*** are some of them bad, Nashville? UGH!

I agree with the earlier posts about the Canadian announcers being homers.

Mick will call it like he sees them. While you may or may not agree, you are going to get his (what I believe is) honest opinion. He calls out Wings as much as their opponents when they make a bonehead play or get away with an infraction.

I am always grateful when I get the Detroit broadcast vs. the opposing teams. While a few of the other broadcast teams aren't bad (the Dallas guys are pretty good - the SJ guys are WAY overrated), I enjoy listening to Ken and Mick more than any of the others hands down.

The other good part to the team though is it doesn't seem as though Ken is trying to get the spot light either. If Mick has something to say he lets him go with it, it is not like play by play is necessary, so he lets Mick go and then goes back to the game when Mick is done.

And he is quick to point out if something happens, that Mick said it would a period or two ago. They are a good compliment to each other and work real well together!

Also, nice to see him traveling w/ the team more this year.

Metallica - Whisey in the Jaro. Well it starts in the jar!

That was great!

Mickey Redmond is the best in the business. He's been commentating as long as i can remember. And i was waiting for something like that when Metallica came into the conversation!i laughed so hard.Mickey's a classic and i love listening to what he has to say, even if it is about the disadvantages of composite sticks. And you always know a complaint is coming when a penalty is called and he goes "oh boy".Mickey Redmond is hands-down the best.It will be a sad day in the hockey world when he leaves the broadcast booth.

I really like the Boston guys at NESN, The Washington announcers are good too, the florida guy is cool with all the cool sayings after a panthers goal... I really like gord miller paired with pierre mcguire too like in the world juniors, even though pierre is a bit of a ****** sometimes he got the most passion of everyone he's really into it reminds me of a canadian version of niklas wikegard but a bit smarter hehe....

So there are some good duos out there not only daniels and redmonds :)

Seriously, NESN has the worst broadcasters, alright maybe Brickley is knowledgeable, but holy s*** is the other guy horrible!

Jack Edwards could make stretching seem like a highlight real save, that guy is as annoying as they come and is the biggest homer without a doubt!

Redmond has gone increasingly senile, im sick of hearing his retreaded phrases and referee/stick complaints over and over, bring in Dmac or someone. It was also disturbing to hear mickey's orgasm when may and barch fought. Mickey needs to retire. I'd say the same thing for Harry Neale, don cherry, and Bob Cole, sometimes you just get too old. Bth him and Daniels have becoe more homerish in the last few years. But I think Daniels has a pretty good voice for pbp although recently he's been screaming alot more. But i appreciate what he has done in the past, especially his memorable cals against the avs/ after datsyukian dekes.

Mickey is, IMHO, the best color man in the game. He goes out of his way to try and not be a homer. He knows the game, and he tells it like it is.

I have a few dvds of his first year broadcasting Red Wing games back in 1979, when he teamed up with Larry Osterman on ON-TV. He was pretty quiet, and learning his craft, and then he moved on to CBC doing HNIC. He came back to Detroit in 1985, and we have been lucky to have him doing games since. I like Ken Daniels, but Mickey and Dave Strader were a really good team.

I don't look forward to the day he retires, especially if we have Larry Murphy full time doing color. He's hard to listen to. So keeper goin Mick, Red Wing hockey isn't the same when you aren't in the booth.

I personally think he should have gone into the HHOF in the broadcasters category way before John Davidson.

Your never too old, youngs guys dont understand the game half as good as any of the 4 guys you mentioned. The best around today is Jim Hughson and he's 53 already. If you think Mickey is a bad commentator and a homer you dont listen to much else, I'm a big broadcaster guy, and most FSN channels have terrible commentators.

Quoted for truth. Mickey is a Red Wings institution.

Correct Hughson is the best, but Mickey just acts liek an old man the way he complains about anything new in the game or has food or booze in his mouth when he is talking. Most announcers are pretty bad, becuase they either get in the business because of a good voice, or background in hockey, but I would say the guy with the best Voice/knowledge ratio would be Bill Clement, he is silky smooth and like mickey a book of knowledge, plus he is a lot more liberal about changes happening in the game, he doesn't drivel in the past like Mickey.

Mickey is one of the only colour commentators I've heard that gets angry when his team gets a powerplay as a result of a crap call from an official.

very true.that shows how much he wants the league as a whole to function without extremely soft calls,no matter what team it benefits.i really like his passion for the game.
