Don Cherry pissed off

I agree that Grapes can say some foolish stuff at times, but it is a difficult job. He comes out in front of millions weekly to speak his mind on hockey, and sometimes he is wrong. Hard thing to do though. It is easy to remain quiet, but it is difficult to speak your mind. Most seem to subscribe to Lincoln's quote "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.".

About his military talks, yeah I totally agree with you. Sometimes he can overextend himself. He is there for hockey and nothing else. But I think his heart is in the right place, even if he does mess it up sometimes. I appreciate that he gives our soldiers a moment on a tv program they likely enjoyed as he tries to thank them, at least he tries.

WWII is a difficult topic and perhaps he made those comments but I assure you Canadians do not feel that way. We are proud of the contributions made during WWII and like the rest of the world, we wish the entire War did not have to happen. Perhaps if the world leaders knew what hitler was planning they could have stopped him before he had any power..... it is a sad tale.

This is a great post. Although our contribution in the WWII was smaller it was just as vital. It was Allied forces. They all played a vital role. I don't want to hijack this thread either. Sorry.

I don't have too many issues with Grapes. However, I remember an instance where I took immediate offense to a statement ofhis on one occasion when he diverted from hockey talk on Coach's Corner last season and made an asinine statement of how much better Canadian soldiers were over American soldiers during World War ll, something that never should have been said amongst other reasons that I won't go into that could derail the thread.

He says Stuff like that to try and instill some national Pride amongst Canadians. Canadians generally see themselves as insignificant, as USA's little Brother, and Barely a nation that can stand on it's own. Our navy is the butt of a lot of Jokes. We're gonna send the Canadian navy over to help in Iraq. The Canoe should get there in about 4 months.

Canadians rarely take Canada seriously, and all Cherry tries to do is remind us that we do have our own history, we do have our own identity and we do have lots to be proud of as a Country.

It seems like Every Single American can boast about how much greater they are than everybody else, and if you don't say that, you're not Patriotic. The second someone from another country talks about their accomplishments, they get Bashed.

Can you prove american soldiers were better than Canadian soldiers in WW2? In history classes growing up, did you learn about Canada's involvement in the War? did you learn about the battles we were in, and the battles that were won because of us? I understand US dropped the bomb to end/win the war. I'm not saying either side was better than the other, but before you go and get offended that someone claims that they did more than your army in a certain war, make sure you know all the facts from both sides.

Uhm. Don Cherry has a good reason for being pissed off. People need to see past the idiocy of his rant to understand the high standards Canada has for their hockey. Absolutely, he should be pointed and laughed at, but for all the sore ass Canadians, the reason they're sore is because they have high expectations of their country. Look at the way people here acted when USA basketball lost to countries they shouldn't have. Look at the way the media and people acted. Look at the way the media and people in Canada are acting now and when the US won in the WJC 2003'ish (too lazy to look up the exact year, but right around there) on that Fleury self-ownage. They are pissed, and bitter. They will pull out their retarded patriotic stripes and try to make up for the fact that they lost to a better team. It happens, and everyone does it.

Entertainment is probably the main reason why I keep coming back - intelligent discussion will only get you so far :D.

So, Canadians don't take Canada seriously, and it's the fault of the Americans? And this thread is about (allegedly) a Canadian bashing an American accomplishment. And why do you capitalize random words?

Get over it. Everybody - seriously, this is ridiculous. I'm a U.S. citizen, but I have family in Canada so I don't take part in bashing the country. All of the points that Don Cherry were making could be 100% valid as far as I know, but it doesn't matter. The way I see it, the NHL and hockey wouldn't be what it is without either country. BUT, Don Cherry saying all that stuff just makes him come off like a sore loser - and that's exactly what the rest of you sound like. Your country lost - get over it. 'Yeah well, Stamkos blah blah blah' - you lost. 'Yeah well, U.S. players play in Canada blah blah' - you lost. None of that matters. Canada beats the U.S. in hockey overall - hands down. Everybody knows that. But Don Cherry or any of you had any class, you would just congratulate the winner and stop making excuses for losing. The simple fact that you are getting so fired up about it only gives the impression that the dominance that you are spewing about isn't quite what your words say. It gives the impression that there is, in fact, an argument here. I think the main point the original poster was making is that Don Cherry is annoying as hell. I'm pretty sure that's what all U.S. (or anyone not from Canada) hockey fan thinks. The reason for that is because he IS annoying as hell. Don Cherry's answer for EVERYTHING is CANADA is GREAT and if something bad happens, it was because come non-Canadian player had the puck. Something good happens 'OOOOOOO CANADA!!!!' - something bad happens 'should have had more Canada.' It is freaking annoying as hell. He may be a 'stand up guy' and help out and all and that's great..... really. But, the guy is so obnoxious on my TV - I honestly do not understand how even you Canadian fans can not completely groan with disdain everytime he shows up on your screen. Put the Canada vs. U.S. aside - it seems like it spouts up at every freaking opportunity.

Wow, Way to Summarize how the rest of the world feels about 2 thirds of the americans on TV that are the Same way. 66% of american is exactly this way. We've got 1 guy.

Why do I Capitalize random words?

don't know, habit.

Canada does have an inferiority complex. Especially when comparing itself to America. It's not the US's Fault, it's ours. Don's point is that we should be proud of who we are, and what we've done, and the fact is, not many Canadians really know all that much about what we've done. Canadian history isn't nearly as emphasized in Schools as American history. Canadian Pride isn't taught/bred over here nearly as much as it is over there. It's not your fault.

How many people even know about the War between Windsor and Detroit? in the 1800's Detroit was constantly attacking and trying to take over Windsor/Sandwich through Amherstberg. We defended time and time again, stationing at fort Malden.

These Battles were not covered at any school I went to. Were they covered in Detroit schools? Probably not, because It was a battle that Canada won. I live right next to this great, historical battle field....you'd think the schools around here would make a bigger deal out of it.

I'd imagine that when you guys in the US Study World War 2, the main emphasis is on The US's involvement, and you're pretty much told the war was going on, and then US came in, swept up, whooped some ass and won the thing.

In Canada, we spend equal time learning about hte cause of the war, the background behind it, the involvement of Every Country, and about every battle.

All Don cherry tires to do is to tell Canadians, you live in a great Country, get your head up and get over this inferiority complex we have. He wants us all to Wave a Canadian Flag in our front lawn, get behind our own military, and have the mindset that we live in the Greatest country in the world.

Kind of sounds like the philosophy of someone very close to us.

You wanna know why the world hates US so much? Because Everytime someone turns on American TV, all they see is one American Don Cherry after another. Now you know what it's like to hear someone from another country talk about nothing other than how they're the Greatest country in the world.

I personally don't hate America. I love living in Windsor, just so I can go over the border and Go to Wings/Lions/Tigers games. I love that I'm close enought to get all the American TV channels. I wish out country was as patriotic as yours. I love the 50 different Identities all of your states each have. I love going down to Texas and Seeing the Texas Pride everyone has. I love going to New York, and seeing the New york Pride that everyone has. I also love when someone from My Country shows that Same Pride in My Country.

You are imagining quite ******* wrong.

Also, your War between Windsor and Detroit... that's the War of 1812. We were fighting Britain, not Canada. While this war is not covered in too much detail (more so because it changed almost nothing), at least in our crappy American schools, we learn who the combatants were. <_<

he is actually talking about the militia based Battle of Windsor in 1837

I'm pretty sure 99% of people in Canada agree with this too, it's not just Americans.

This is true, but nothing like that should have been said during an interview. Was this on live radio or television or just something someone happened to pick up at random?

Cherry did not want to be interviewed and I believe they were recording and he wasn't aware of that. He could handled it in a better way but according to the head of CBC sports the reporter was being very aggresive towards Cherry who did not want to talk.

I think I would freak out too. lol.
