Right now I would give it to J-Ho. Sure Rask has better stats, but Howie has played many more games. If you look at their stats as of late Howie dominates the NHL. Tyler Myers is also looking fantastic. This kid will be a Norris winner someday.

Howard's play has a pretty big argument for being the most important/biggest impact for team out of that list considering our injurys and defensive stat improvements.

Myers is probably going to get it but much like Datsyuk with the Hart, a Calder nom for Howie would be good enough for me.

Last Wing to win it? Anyone got this stored in their memory bank? Gonna have to go back awhile.

If Howard keeps up his current 'tending abilities, it's probably gonna be close between him and Myers.

If the Wings make the playoffs with Howard still in the starting role, I'd expect him to get it (as he'd be a huge part of us getting there).

It will be Tavares. Just like clockwork the NHL will promote the biggest name they can.

Tavares is far from a Crosby or an Ovechkin. If Jimmy continues his play and we make the playoffs because of it that seems like a bigger storey then Tavares is the leading scorer on a sub par Islander's team as usual.

not for NHL marketing.

right, but we're not the voters :(

to me it's: Myers, Duchesne, Tavares. and the sole fact that Tavares is not first on this list

speaks volumes about the Islanders organization.

personally, I'm pulling for Jimmy H and Matt Duchesne.

If you look at NHL.com, Jimmy is getting way more attention then Tavares these days. His play this season hasn't warranted him a Calder yet but if he plays like this for the rest of the year it will be hard for them to not vote for him.

He is also a good story about a guy on his last leg when it comes to NHL hockey. His last shot and finally started playing up to his potential. Who wouldn't like that story?

Rask would be easily the winner if Boston had given him the amount of games he has deserved. They just don't want to go to the playoffs with him, so they keep playing Thomas, even if he's not playing that well.

True enough.

Bergfors is a dark horse. 27 points in 42 games and a -3 rating. He'd probably be the point leader among rookies if the Devils had played as many games as the Avs and Isles.

Jimmy gets the nod for Netminders, Myers will be the D rep and Tavares regardless will be the forward and overall front runner in the group.

Warning the rest is a rant

Rask is getting hosed, Tim Thomas is making too much money for the Beantown folks to Bench him. Unfortunately a lot of line ups in this area are about who makes the dough (see J.D. Drew in RF for the Sox).

Thomas is a poor man's version of Ozzie (although I believe paid more than Ozzie, too lazy to look it up right now!)

Rask will be the future in Boston, this kid has been highly touted and played very well everywhere he has been, yet no one will ride the kid. Did he even start in TO? (I know he was there 1? year and was what 17/18?) Raycroft for Rask was a win for Boston then and the kid is better now.

Why he rides the pine is beyond me.

Personally I think he is a better goaltender than PHI/OTT/CHI/WAS/TBL well lets just say better than a lot of teams have.

Tavares wins it and I am happy about that, very rarely does the guy who deserve it win it, or does the guy who wins it get the fan backing. Usually the fans (unless the player is from their team) will go on rants on every blog about how the 2nd or 3rd place guy deserved it.

J-Ho even being mentioned will be great for his confidence, but I think winning it is out of the question for anyone other than Tavares.

While he is not Crosby or Ovie, he is a young name and the league is pimping the young names!

Problem with that as the NBA has found out with Agent zero, you pimp them out, you put them in front of everyone, they f*** up (Hey if Tiger can f*** it up Crosby/Ovie anyone can f*** it up) you are now on the hook for them. David Stern made Arenas a fool, Arenas acted the part, and now they are trying to blame only Gilbert.

Tavares will win because he is a forward and a hopeful huge name, Howard if Nominated will come in third because he is a netminder, unless he is a vezina candidate.

Howard is basically on pace to set the same numbers as Mason did last season. He won't have the shutouts but that's not really a huge deal. It's all speculation anyways. He must maintain the same level of play he has had lately. If he does that there is no reason that he can't be an actual contender. Tavares has been hot and cold. Trust me, I have the guy in my pool. He hasn't been spectacular and shares the rookie point lead with Duchene.

Mason's Calder numbers were 33 wins 2.44 GAA 91.6 SV%. I believe those numbers are accurate.

Howard has 16 wins 2.14 GAA and 92.8 SV%

If he he can be as good and as consistent as he has been lately I think it will be hard for them to pick someone other then him unless of course Myers slows down or Duchene or Tavares heat up.

I just don't see Howard winning this.

Sure it'd be nice, but not going to happen.

I hesitate to even say this, as I know there's a good chance it'll set off a s***-storm.

However, I have to REALLY disagree. Thomas won the Vezina last year and was on the First All-Star team.

He had a 2.10 GAA and 0.933 sv %.

Osgood had a 3.09 GAA and 0.887 sv %. Needless to say, he did not win the Vezina and did not make any All-Star team.

Relating that back to this thread a little bit, I don't really think Rask is getting hosed. I mean, I haven't followed Boston really carefully, but he's played about 20 games I believe. And he's playing behind a great goalie. It's reasonable. It will however, hurt his chances of a Calder, which is good for Howard. Of course, who's to say that Rask's numbers are only so good because he hasn't played more?

The one thing I haven't checked, is the types of teams he's played against, if people remember that whole argument from the Osgood/Howard thing. If anyone knows the sorts of games Rask's been getting, it would be interesting to look at.

Yeah calling Thomas a poor-man's Ozzie isn't exactly accurate.. In the playoffs MAYBE, but definitely not in the regular season. They have similarities though.

Thing is, if Howard's next 28 games are like his first 28 then it will be very very hard to argue against him winning the Calder. He'll most likely get more wins as well and I really don't see how Osgood right now will start stealing starts from Howard. So if Howard keeps it up, Detroit makes the playoffs then I really think the Calder is his. But goalies are tricky to predict, so anything can happen.
