Osgood better be a wall tonight if he's gonna run his mouth.

That's the thing, he's running his mouth to make excuses for a game he hasn't even played yet. "We'll see how it works out." What the hell is that?

I could agree with you more easily if the Wings were comfortably in a playoff spot.. But Jimmy's been hot and every point is so valuable I can see why Babcock would be weary about putting an inconsistent Ozzy back into the mix.. Especially when playing against teams ahead of Wings in the standings. Babcock took the safe bet and saved him for a game like this against a top Eastern team. If Ozzie gets routed we go back to Howard the rest of the way.. no harm done, if Ozzie shines then he has some tough choices to make in the upcoming games.

This is the reason why no matter how good Ozzie plays tonight he's still out. He may get a few more chances from a good performance tonight but nothing more I wouldn't think.

I agree with you there. Ozzie is still Ozzie. Even if he plays lights out tonight and stops 50 shots (Lets all hope they dont get 50 shots).. With the offensive struggles this team has had all year I don't know how we can even risk playing Ozzie in that many games.. Its no secret Ozzie is notorious for bad goals and soft goals.. And well known for getting rattled and giving up back to back goals.. With the way this team has played offensively.. you give up those back to back soft goals.. and its pretty much game over.

After tonight, I hope Babcock sits him for another month. This isn't Ozzy's usual attitude and he definitely hasn't shown anything this season to warrant getting the start over Howard. I would be mad too, but keep it to yourself. You aren't some celebrity that gets to run his mouth to the press all the time.

I agree with Ozzie. I find it somewhat strange Babcock decided tonight to go with Ozzie against the highest scoring team in the league as well. I don't like the way Babcock has handled the goaltender situation either. I hope Ozzie gets his chance now to string some starts together at least. It would be a pretty low move for Babcock to start Ozzie against the Capitals and go right back to Howard for another stretch.

Ozzie needs some starts. People here are bitching about him and he hasn't even played in a month. How can he prove anything to the people always on his case when he is tracking face-offs on the bench for the past month? Jimmy Howard has been terrific for the Red Wings, but I still believe our playoff goalie (yes I know, they have to get there first) is Chris Osgood when the time comes.

Go Ozzie! Prove the doubters wrong for the millionth time in your career.

If he's going to keep bitching about it, I hope they trade his ass. Howie's playing lights out, either outplay him or shut your festering gob, you ***!

How do you outplay someone from the bench?

Yes, let's trade our MVP from the past two playoff runs. Quality idea.

EDIT: Not to mention, why would any team want a goalie that "sucks"?

that makes me nervous for a game like tonight. He needs to be great tonight, but he doesn't even seem confident in himself. Talking smack in the press about your coach is not cool and not red wing-like at all. Ozzy better have a lights out performance tonight or Babcock won't hesitate to put Jimmy in. A few weak goals are not going to cut it anymore. 2 weak goals tonight and he is out of the game. Come on Ozzy, we need you tonight.

he's mad because he knows and everyone knows come playoff time he will probably still end up being the starter, and I'm sure he just wants to get in and stay fresh.

What purpose would that serve? Why even bother starting Ozzie tonight if the intention is to turn around and sit him for another month? So the plan is to throw Ozzie in against the best offensive team in the NHL so Babcock can either protect Howard or really stick it to Ozzie for his comments.

Sad thing is, Babcock would probably embrace the idea.

Not a lot of love for Ozzie here right now.
I guess the Jimmy Howard bandwagon is quite comfortable nowadays..
I get it.
But it will get bumpier.

Like any goalie, the only thing Ozzie needs is a good team in front of him that will come to play every game. If he gets hung out to dry, then somebody screwed up long before the puck ended up in the net. And if you haden't noticed, this team was playing horrible in october / november and a good portion of december as well.(regardless of who was in net, mind you.)
Ozzie will come through when the Wings need him, he still is one of the top goalies in the NHL. I have no doubt in my mind.
So to all the Ozzie doubters, dont bother chanting "Ozzie" anywhere, including your own house, when he comes up with a big save or backstopping the Wings on another Stanley Cup run.
Don't chant his name or scream how great a goalie you think he is, because obviously you don't.

Jimmy Howard is a great kid and hopefully he will be able to satisfy the ridiculous expectations this city has of its NHL-goaltenders one day.
But if you think you won't need Chris Osgood down the stretch, you might be sorely mistaken..

Good post. clap.gif

It's sad how quickly "fans" turn on a player that has meant so much to their team.

I'm not turning on Osgood. I'm just not happy that he feels it's necessary to create controversy when the goaltending situation so far this season has been practically the only bright spot. Osgood has plenty of time to get in playoff shape down the stretch when the Wing's need a goalie to step up like Howard has lately, there was no reason for him to bring this up to the media other than his own personal ego.

Just because they wear a red wing uniform doesn't mean you like them or want them to stay on the team (for example a few players i dont want here; Leino, Williams, Lebda, Meech, Maltby)

Odd how an article one day has Ozzie being the best mentor to Howard he can be (as stated by Holland) and then a couple of days later this crap comes out.
Hard to believe both sides of the story.

He is one of the best playoff goalies in the NHL. When he has a team that plays in front of him he does quite well in the regular season. When they don't he gets exposed.

I think most ppl on here have a problem with his attitude right now. I thought it was about playing as a team and doing what is best for the team at that moment in time. Not giving Ozzie games to make him feel better.

I think Ozzie should see this as a tremendous opportunity and a real statement game for him. Babs giving him the nod against a great offensive team should be motivation enough (even if it is just to give Howard a rest).

The point you're missing is there might not BE a Stanley Cup run. There might not even be playoffs. I've watched this guy go from hotter than hell to cold as ice at the drop of a redliner and over and over again, it's the only consistent thing he's done his whole career, and I'm not surprised in the least Babcock has reservations starting him. You just never know which Osgood is going to show up. I typically refrain from bashing the guy but if he's going to whine to the media, he's asking for it in a big, big way.

Of course you can't like all of them.
But you should still root for 'em.
You're a fan of the Detroit Red Wings. Not of 'most of the Detroit Red Wings'.

Being a fan shouldn't be conditional.

Tis doesn't have anyhting to do with Howard. I'm sure he isn't blaming Howard and he is being a good mentor to him.

It is between him and Babs.
