Jonathan Ericsson:

1 SH goal (game winner) 1 assist +4

Multiple excellent defensive plays too.

Hey ddubters-- eat s***.

What have I said all along? When he's confident in himself he's a very good young defenseman. When he's down on himself he sucks. Fine-- I can describe Filppula or most other Wings as s*** when they're not confident.

But what happens when Big Rig is confident? He rocks the s*** out of the frigging rink.

Thanks for updating. Beat me to it.

Ericsson used his stick to deflect Lidstrom's shot into the net... if you define that as a Lidstrom goal Holmstrom would have a total of 4 goals this year and Lidstrom would have two dozen.

If he can get anywhere close to playoff form from last year it's huge. We need him and Lilja playing well, if only Danos groin would fix up we'd be firing on all cylinders. If the strong play from the team and the struggling players from the 1st half continues it's gonna be a great last couple games.

Ericsson had another strong game tonight. He was so strong around the net and completely manhandled Tootoo during his scoring chance. Aside from playing well defensively he was also dangerous in the offensive zone and managed to get a slapper off from the point more than once. If he can keep taking those bomb shots from the point he'll continue to generate offense. And Ericsson's nothing if not driven by his offensive play. When he's playing well offensively he's confident and plays the puck well in his own zone.

Having experienced a rougher than anticipated first full NHL season, Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson recently got back to the basics, brushing up on the fundamentals of the position.

The Red Wings hope the positive results they have seen in recent games indicates the promising 6-foot-4, 220-pound defenseman has regained his confidence.

“I think I had a good break there when I didn’t play a couple of games,’’ Ericsson said. “We worked on stuff, me and Beast (assistant coach Brad McCrimmon) and Meecher (defenseman Derek Meech), that we really needed to work on and it’s going better for me since then.

“Little things you need to do as a D-man: Get to pucks fast, keep your head up and make your plays right away, skate fast instead of standing still. When you’re not confident enough, you’re just kind of standing still trying to find a pass.

“Do it over and over, and after a while it’s going to be back in your head instead of having to think about it all the time.’’

From The Detroit News: http://detnews.com/article/20100327/OPINION03/3270397/1128/sports0103/Red-Wings-D-Jonathan-Ericsson-bounces-back-from-benching#ixzz0jRZ4Q4xd

"He's really responding well," captain Nick Lidstrom said. "He's making the right plays. He's finding the forwards. When he's in a bad spot he just gets the puck out. You don't have to make plays all the time and he's starting to learn that. This has been a learning experience for him and I think it's going to make him a better player in the long run."

It's also helped immeasurably that he's playing alongside a veteran like Lilja who communicates non-stop on the ice. Lilja is like a traffic cop alongside Ericsson, telling him where to go and where to move the puck. He has allowed Ericsson to get out of his own head and just play.

"You can see that his confidence has really taken a step forward," Babcock said. "You hope it continues because he's a big-bodied guy that can really help us."

He's looked good every since he's been sat.

Although I don't think it was all his fault, it's easier to play when your best players are playing well. A 6th defenseman can only do so much.

<--- you can thank this guy.

Babcock didn't shut Ericsson down, but he did bench him. He sat him for five out of six games. During that time, Ericsson, a defenseman, spent a lot of time in counsel with assistant coach Brad McCrimmon, who in his 18 years playing defense in the NHL experienced just about every up and down there is.

The message was a simple one, to borrow from the movie "Bull Durham" -- "Stop thinking, Meat, you can only hurt the ballclub."

Well, he tends to get a lot of bashing here. I'm still not exactly sure what he does. Yeah, he's the coach of the defensemen, but what does that really mean? It seems like he just runs drills in practice. He "runs" the defense but I think it's mostly Babs.

He made a few mistakes against EDM but at least he was aggressive and I think we can all agree that he is better prepared to shake it off this time around.

He had a comparatively rough game but none of the D had a particularly good game aside from Kronwall.

The entire team completely collapsed from the end of the second period, until the last 5 minutes of the 3rd... I thought Ericsson looked good until that point and good once everyone picked it back up as well... it was just a horrendous effort by the team as a whole once they went up 4-0 to really put Edmonton away, they're lucky they won.

A bit of an off game against CBJ last night. Hope he forgets about it, moves on and prepares for Friday whether or not he's in the lineup.

Yeah, I hope Babcock lets him play Friday so he can bounce back from his bad game against the Jackets.

He was wandering around again too much... needs to stay back more and only jump in when a forward has him covered... he better play Friday... we still won with him in and Lebda is such a horrible downgrade, there's no reason he shouldn't play...
