ericsson has been great these last 2 games. So solid, glad to see he's bringing that intensity he had last year. Wish he would hit a bit more but i'll take it. Had a beauty move and a great scoring opportunity when the game was on the line. Keep it up Big E !!!!!!! Lilja has also helped him alot, props goes out to him too

"We really need him to come back," Ericsson said. "I learn a lot from him in practice and in games just watching him. I learn off the ice from his leadership. This is his team."

Ericsson's stall is right next to Lidstrom's on the Wings' locker room.

"I think they put me here for a reason," [said Ericsson,] who's also alongside Brad Stuart in the room.

Game 4 vs SJ: EVEN, 4 shots, 27:33 TOI, 5 hits, 1 giveaway

Hmm... I actually agree with someone who posted in the comments section about what Ericsson said. Maybe he shouldn't try to be like Lidstrom but instead, (shudders), Pronger. Well that is, post-lockout version of Pronger and with much less of the ****** bag tactics.

The waste of size that is Ericsson when it comes to physicality is appalling. This kid is all over the map. Back in the day, Cheli would have set him straight much like he did with Fischer.

Apparently he has a great working relationship with Jiri Fischer. I wish Fish would teach him about having a little more snarl to his game.

Fischer wasn't exactly good his first few years either

Fischer was a much greater talent, a 25th overall pick, a top2/4 defenseman, while ericsson is a natural forward, a long-shot project that you can't expect much from, a dead last 297th overall pick.

I really didn't see enough from him this season that instills any confidence that he will ever be a dominant player. Very disappointing on most nights. Hopefully he either improves or gets shipped.

The list of rookie d-men who were disappointing in their first season is as long as it is predictable.

Ericsson will never be Lidstrom so it was absurd for anyone to think he`d step in as a rookie and dominate.

In the NHL you expect first year defensemen to flub the puck-- it takes years for NHL d-men to gain the kind of poise we demand from our 3rd pairing in Detroit. People pretend it wasn`t like that for Kronwall, Fischer, or any of the other non sucky d-men we`ve seen emerge here since the golden years of Vladdy and Lidstrom but those are the facts.

Hell, look at Hall Gill-- he blows donkey dicks but he`s massive and in the playoffs he`s managed to learn how to turn size without skill into shutting down Crosby. Ericsson may not have Gill`s size but at least he can skate well for a guy his size.

In a few years when Ericsson`s got his game nailed down and is playing with confidence most of the people here will pretend they loved him from the start (just like we saw with Kronwall-- anyone remember the rage on here when he got his big contract? The board was pretty split on him back then).

In the end I won`t be shocked when Ericsson`s game evens out and he`s a valuable member of the back end because this is what almost always happens with young d-men who come into the NHL.

That boy just needs a mentor who can teach him how to play a big man's game. He is not the most fitting beneficiary of Nick's experience (or even Raffi's for that matter). There is just no one on the squad who can show him how to clear out the net and make life hell for opposing forwards.

Everyone else you've mentioned is a career defensmen. I'd be more confident in his ability to 'come of age' if he wasn't switched to D so late in his career. He has a lot to learn... moreso than your average draft pick defensmen.

I`d agree with you if he didn`t have a stellar defensive resume in the AHL and in his first 40 or so games in the NHL (in other words-- in every game he played prior to this October). The problem right now is he`s overthinking when he has the puck and that inevitably leads to bad plays. If he played the puck quickly and with confidence like he did in the AHL and in his first NHL games he`d be fine. That`s why he plays like a completely different person when he`s confident-- he`s capable of being so much more. I just hope he can live up to his potential.

Ya. I'm definitely mystified on how he can look like he might be on the road to being dominant so early only to drop off so drastically. I'm hoping it is only a confidence thing. I kinda blame McCrimmon to be honest. And to a much lesser degree, Lids. Though Lids had his hands full with a team that was struggling to make the playoffs most of the season.

I`d make a world of difference to play him with Lidstrom while they still have the chance.

Fischer got bashed relentlessly around here initially but he was turning out great before the incident. I don't think E has anywhere close to the same upside, but I'm confident that he'll turn it around. It just takes time to adjust and he's proven he can play at this level.

You'll be able to tell everyone to eat crow eventually. It's just many, many frustrating arguments away still.

And your keyboard is stuck on the French setting.

At the end of the day I don't think it's possible to try to be like Lidstrom. He's one of the most gifted hockey players to ever play in the NHL.

I think a guy like Ericsson has the ability to be more like Pronger. He won't ever be as good but I can see him being effective at the things that Pronger likes to do (other than the cheap stuff).

Ericsson would need to get much more physical in order to have a prayer of bearing similarity to Pronger.
