Jonathan Ericsson Watch Thread

He has looked great in the WHC next to Erik Karlsson. Those two have such great puck skills, it's really fun to watch them.

Maybe that's what he needs in a partner. Ericsson did play well next to Kronwall last year.

Ericsson has been playing well so far this year. I hope he continues to build on it. He plays best when he plays with an edge.

Agreed. It always seems when Ericcson is trying to play a skilled game he has mess ups. He should settle his game down a bit, play meaner and he will be a very effective player. It was bulls*** how the ref grabbed him and let Brule get three cheapshots in though

Funniest quote from hockeyfights regarding that:

"In the linesman's defense, it was a Red Wings game... I'm sure he didn't come to work tonight prepared to break up a fight."

You can tell Babcock trusts Ericsson more than Kindl. I think Kindl will be the odd man out when Rafi returns.

hard not to trust someone who has spent the vast majority of their time playing with lidstrom

You mean "vast majority" as in his whopping 3 full game appearances? What about when Babcock put Ericsson out during a PK while Lidstrom was in the box, don't remember seeing Kindl out there killing any penalties.

.... Oh, and Babcock use to put Ericsson out during some shut down shifts last season without Lidstrom.

Like I said, Big Rig seems to be Babcock's choice right now. The goal tonight certainly helped reinforce his stance, I'm sure. Kindl better step up on Monday if Rafi doesn't play, because it could be his last game for awhile.

Big E looks better than Kindl to me as well. He really uses his size and knocks guys off the puck in his own end and I like how he seems to police the ice for borderline hits and crap after the whistle on our players. I loved how he jumped Brule after the hit on Datsyuk even though the hit was legit. I just wish he'd stay at home more on defense. He seems to get burned quite often when he tries to jump up offensively.

Now the big question is can he consistently play like he's been recently? He'd be an ideal snarly defenseman if he focused on that part of his game, but being paired with Lidstrom, he's not gonna necessarily be focusing on that part of his game, more passing and knowing when to join the rush, etc.

Yeah I thought Ericsson was good last night, didn't notice anything poorly done all night. He made a phsyical impact too.

He was clearing the crease very effectively last night, making good passes and looked positionally ok, he also bailed Rafalski out defensively a couple times too... he still seems to get too deep in the offensive zone at times, but if that's the trade-off to him playing with the confidence he has shown the last handful of games, I'll take it!

On a sidenote, how great did Salei look last night?! That is looking like a bargain of a signing right now!
