Are people here actually bagging on Filppula for missing the break-a-way he caused solely by himself and then hooked so his momentum changed right before he could shoot? Or is there some other play I'm unaware as i didn't watch the first.

So I'm really the only one who questions Flips offensive abilities???

Consistently, yes. wings7 and lilja4mvp fall in the category I described to you. :)

And obviously missing that shot makes everyone hate him, so a bad game to be taking any conclusions from.

that shot just confirms what everyone already knew: he'll never be a good goal scorer.

not exactly an earth shattering revelation.

There's definitely still more than that...

If it makes you feel any better, I don't hold that shot against him or anything else. Sometimes you just miss s***. It happens. I don't think it was a hard shot to make though as you suggested, though I don't think it's demonstrative of "Flip's terrible shot" that people were blaming it on. I do think he has a bad shot, but it had nothing to do with missing that goal. It was just a fluke thing that happens to lots of guys now and again.

And seeing as I'm not really surprised nor one who expects Flip to be a solid finisher, I wasn't heartbroken or shocked when he whiffed on the the breakaway, and I don't think the hook had anything to do with it.

I don't get down on him in games like this because I don't have elevated expectations of his offensive skills. The reason he's subject to a good deal of bashing from more than just a handful of people as you suggest is because people expect too much out of him based on previous experience with other guys, his contract and the amount of minutes he gets in a scoring role.

To me, it always boils down to my fundamental analysis of the guy: average at best offensive skill set, exceptionally strong defensive abilities.

He's got descent hands at times but has never been able to find it in him to really finish plays consistently. How many times has he made a descent move only to cough up the puck before even getting to the net, failing to get a descent shot off or just plain failing to even get a shot off? His shot is pretty rough for that matter as noted. He's an average passer; not especially good or bad. He oftentimes gets out-muscled and coughs up the puck in the offensive zone along the boards. If the D plays him to the outside, he's not going to get very far. And he does fall, and he falls a lot especially along the boards as previously mentioned.

That doesn't make him a bad player, but if you accept those things, it's not so frustrating when you see him in games like today. No one gets too pissed when other guys botch opportunities because people have more grounded expectations. Being a stronger defensive player isn't a bad thing at all either. Like I've said many times, his defensive skills are great and I think he could be a huge asset to a team that struggled more on defense.

Again, my only beef with him as a Wing is his contract and lack of goals. It's not a personal thing. He's in a tough spot trying to fill a role that I don't think he's suited for in a pressure-filled environment like Detroit. I don't blame him for that.

Just checking in. Don't know whether to be happy that we got a 1 pt or disappointed that we could have gotten 2.

Looks like we got shell shocked and Howie stood tall again.

What is the deal? It used to be us taking 40+ shots on opponents.

I am happy we got 1 point. They looked completely lost as a team. This worries me for the west coast road trip.

No one ever said he's a goal scorer. But that doesn't mean he won't be good for 20 goals.

Oh, and based on your little Datsyuk vs. Flip thread, this statement is ridiculous.

I'm not saying that I'm not biased towards flip (though I try to be as objective as I can), but I've never been hard on players for missing shots, especially on a difficult shot like that.

I don't get it. I just don't get it. We have not seen the wings play like this in 20 years. What in the hell is going on? Passes up the middle in your own zone as if nobody is around? Passes in the feet constantly or out of reach...I don't get it at all. Is it because there's so many new faces this year? Is it really the injuries? Most of the guys are back now and have been for several games. But even when we were not banged up to start the year they were playing this way.

Is there any talk of getting trades done before the deadline? This team really needs something to kick them in the ass because while they still are missing key players, that is no excuse for the lazy play in their own end, and blowing leads every game late in games.

I would be willing to be involved in a trade sending a core player away. At this point, we need a shakeup and a change.

Interestingly, I have not really heard of any trade possibilities coming from the Red Wings at all yet this year. What is up with that? Are they hoping with Franzen coming back that things will be ok? Is it just cap issues that they can't do something? I mean, come on. Something has to change with this team. I don't know if our D is just tired and worn out or what but we look slow and lazy on defense every night lately.

Wings have sat pretty tight at the deadline lately. Well, we made a big deal to get Lang and we all know how that worked out. I doubt Mule will come back and just start scoring game after game. We are in serious trouble now.

Yeah. The problem is that there's such a cram for the playoffs in the west that all the teams are going to trip over each other. Unless the Wings can put 6-7 game win streak stretches in a row against western teams, I don't know how we are going to come out on top of the pile of teams trying to win every night.

I will say, this is a very exciting regular season, more so than I can ever remember, but it is quite nerve racking. Just thinknig of where we'd be if we had won half those games we gave up leads in late, we'd be in at least 5th spot right now.

Yeah, looking at the cup half full, I'm glad that for most of the games we have blown leads, we have at least gotten a point out of it. That has kept us right in it. If we can somehow get a streak going of regulation wins, even 4 or 5 straight regulation wins against the west, we can really move up. Big if, and I am not too confident at this point.

If we can acquire some help in the goal scoring department, we'll be fine. Acquire a winger, any winger as long as he has some ability to put the puck in the net (Ray Whitney or someone) and with Franzen back, we'll be in good shape. In the meantime, I'll have to continue listen to how the GREATEST HOCKEY TEAM TO EVER SKATE beat my "old, s***ty" Red Wings till at least March. Blahhhhhhhh :veryangry:
