Lidstroms Defensiv Partners

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about the different defensive pairs Lidstrom was a part of in his long career. Who was his partner when he came into the league? Did he ever played whith Coffey, Murphy and Konstantinov? Did he have a mentor back at the start of his glorious career? When changed his role from learner to mentor?

His first year he was called upon to be an integral part of the team, he had to grow up fast. His earliest mentor was probably Murphy.

McCrimmon was his earliest established partner, and Lidstrom has been quoted as stating he had a big influence on his early years (Mark Howe, as well).

Lidstrom never really played that often with Konstantinov, except on PKs.

There's also Kronwall. He played with Nick for fairly significant periods of time. Last year for one when Kronwall really struggled and needed a boost to his game. And didn't the Wings have a "Swedish Five" with Nick and Nik on the back end?

Larry Murphy was Lidstrom's partner longer/more often than anyone else I remember. Rafalski is getting up there anymore tho, considering that Murph and Raffi play somewhat similar style it makes sense to me.

Lidstrom's had quite a few defensive partners that were/are no big deal. And considering that Lidstrom can/could play with anyone, he ended up babysitting a lot of different people, Kronwall included. Some of the guys he played with like Freddy Olausson you have to think it was just a matter of cohesion between the two of them- Freddy O was nobody before or after that.

He used to get paired with Jeri Fisher before the accident. He also partnered with Lilja for a while

Glad you caught that. I always think in the back of my mind if Scotty were still here Erickson would be paired with Nick, and be improving each game instead of...
