dirtydangles 1,328 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 I think this could easily get out of hand, they could start putting adds everywhere but the ice. im not a huge fan of it.
Guest CaliWingsNut Report post Posted February 12, 2010 (edited) I didn't mind the ads tonight. They weren't all that bad, though I'm sure much worse on a giant hd flatscreen. What did totally piss me off were the physical McDonald's ads on the winter classic glass. edit: changed alot. Jwo 7 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 LED strips with special Kevlar clear plastic should replace the ad's on the boards that way they can rotate unlimited ad's. I like how soccer has them all way around the pitch.
Chase 0 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 id be alright with it, but since its Belle Tire doing it, im not. first i have to watch a couple dozen of their stupid commercials during FSN wings broadcasts, now i have to stare at their name while i watch the game. belle tire can f*** off, i will never buy tires from them. so annoying. Theophany 110 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 I don't like it. Companies should buy "real" ad space if they want to sell their product(s). All ad space is real ad space.
CenterIce 83 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 I think this could easily get out of hand, they could start putting adds everywhere but the ice. im not a huge fan of it. Why stop there? It is all virtual. They would litter the ice, too. The players, and the fans at the Joe wouldn't see it. I am kidding of course, but it has to start some where. Vladiator 116 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 Very noticable. Don't like them, but if they bring some extra cash for a new arena, then I don't have a problem with them.

I like how soccer has them all way around the pitch. Please no, then they would actually become a distraction to the action on the ice. I don't want to think about what it would be like for the players to have to look at electronic billboards when you are trying to keep your eye on the puck along the boards. LeftWinger 4,961 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 I don't see why people have to complain about this. I'm watching the game, and I keep my focus on the ice, so whatever is on the glass means nothing to me. I guess it's a normal thing for people to always ***** and moan about every little thing, even if it has absolutely no effect on them. Tell that to the family who just paid hundreds of dollars to sit in the lower bowl behind the net and has the words in their site lines!
Jasper84 333 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 Tell that to the family who just paid hundreds of dollars to sit in the lower bowl behind the net and has the words in their site lines! It's just virtual, on tv screen. Those people you mentioned, don't see it. I don't know who's profiting from these ads, but if it is true that it's being done to help out with the new arena, then I stand by what I said, and to let the ads stay. But by the looks of this thread, I'm one of few people who is okay with it.

Theophany 110 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 If the players can ignore the fans behind the glass as well them pounding the glass, I feel they can ignore the ad's. Fans on the glass (not in line of sight of a puck) and ads in LED lights on the boards are two completely different things. Soccer (which has LED boards for advertisement around the field) has a huge ball that needs to be kept track of; hockey has a small black puck that can often disappear even with players on the ice blocking it. It would be near impossible to see if there were also LED boards shining in the players' eyes while they were trying to see a puck tossed off the boards and into their end. Something akin to e-ink (used in Amazon's Kindle e-reader) wouldn't be a bad thing; it just can't be bright lights shining into the eyes of the players. For a better demonstration, try taking a ball and tossing it up at the sun and trying to catch it. That's far stronger, but still the same concept. Small moving object and light shining in your eyes is hard as hell to see.
Guest scottj Report post Posted February 12, 2010 i didn't care about the ads... no big deal to me. YET. i hope they don't go overboard with it though n fill up the whole other side of the glass with ads unless all of those ads went directly to the new arena then whatever, i want this new arena to be the s***

thegerkin 189 Report post Posted February 12, 2010 As long as they use their TV-only wizardry to place the ads (like the first down line in football), then I'm ok with it, IN MODERATION. Let's not turn this into soccer. And the one area I feel is off-limits to any advertising is the uniform itself. I know most minor league teams have a sponsor patch because they do need the money, and I can tolerate 1 patch. But I've heard the idea kicked around about turning hockey jerseys into soccer jerseys, which are basically mobile advertising boards. In my opinion, soccer uniforms are probably the ugliest jerseys overall out of all sports. I guess I don't want North American hockey jerseys to look like their German counterparts. Too distracting. Name plate, number, and team logo is all that is required... let's just stick with that. There is a point where you can actually have too many ads and people can come to resent your name/product/service instead of making a new customer.
