LAST UPDATED (3-3-2010, 11:45 AM ET)

March 3, 2010
Anaheim Acquires: (D) Aaron Ward
Carolina Acquires: (G) Justin Pogge, 4th-Round Pick

Boston Acquires: (D) Dennis Seidenberg, (D) Matthew Bartkowski
Florida Acquires: (F) Craig Weller, (F) Byron Bitz, 2nd-Round Pick
It's amazing how much clarity comes when you care more about the Red Wings than any individual player.

"They are the best team in the world. They are a team that can just take over when they want to," Chicago's Patrick Kane said (of the Detroit Red Wings).

Hmm I wonder why our team has struggled... can it somehow be connected to injured players returning being our deadline deals??

Two straight Stanley Cup finals, A Gold Medal winning Coach and front office. I think we'll be fine.

Oh! I didn't know we were using our 2008-2009 rosters.

Wait, scratch that! I didn't know we had Team Canada's roster!

We WILL be fine!

..no you're right, that doesn't make sense..

you're right keeping the same core of players and signing a ton of cast aways is the premier way of getting back to the finals, we shall ride the broken back of Todd Bertuzzi and Jason Williams to the promised land.

I know, the Loss of Hossa/Hudler/Sammy/etc make no difference at all, we shouldn't do anything. We were there before and lost, let's just roll into the playoffs with what we have dry.gif . Hell let's lose Lebda/Meech for nothing to ala Quincey because that is a brilliant plan; I mean we did make the finals 2x and they won gold in the olympics so obviously they can do no wrong.

How about you look 30min north and ask the Pistons how the keeping just the core together worked out for them.

I specifically got bummed with the Poni deal. Look around pages 4-6 of the other trade deadline thread.

Dealing guys like Lebda doesn't count, IMHO. Of course I wouldn't mind him being moved, but you made it sound (in this thread) like you wanted to dump picks/prospects, rather than guys like Lebda. Losing Abdelkader wouldn't be the worst loss, but it'll also be interesting to see if he can become a Draper-esque player in the next few years.

Now, losing guys like Lebda and Abdelkader plus a pick to supplement some goal-scoring depth up front probably isn't going to make or break this season. I'm not going to get into Holland's comment about Franzen, Lilja and Kronwall being our trade deadline acquisitions, but I will say that the guys that needed to step up in their absence will be more effective now that the pressure is off and they're playing against lower line talent.

Lastly, while it's obvious depth is one of the most important components to winning a cup, I'm just not sure one guy like Poni is enough to equate to much of a difference at all.

Now, the Williams signing.....I agree with. Injured or not this season, I don't think he would've done anything worth his $1.5 million like Bert has. Now that being said, we also need to keep in mind that its not as simple as his $1.5 equaling a $5 million player. Adding a guy like that doesn't just cost money, it cost prospects/picks that the Wings really don't have a ton of right now.

Yeah, and it was just as silly there. Holland's job is to run a good team and a good business, not to respond to those few fans who mindlessly trade deadlines purely for their own transient excitement.

Just to clarify--as I agree that we need something--was that a rhetorical "look north" or specifically directed at me?

I am surprised that the "Ken Holland obviously knows more about hockey than you" argument hasn't been trotted out yet today.

So you think we should lose Lebda for nothing this summer then? You think we can actually contend for the SC with this roster? Get off Hollands nuts and realize he's human and will make mistakes.

If anyone is interested, here are the trades analyzed in haiku form.

http://thegamesheet.com/?p=232

I enjoyed this one:

Carolina Hurricanes trade Aaron Ward to Anaheim Ducks for Justin Pogge and a draft pick:

Time is a river

Somewhere back there down the banks

Is Pogge’s career

Anyway, not expecting Kenny to do much, but I'm hoping San Jose trades for another player who doesn't enjoy showing up for big games...
