UPDATED: Wilson will be responsible for a new stadium for the Red Wings

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Tom Wilson will soon work for llitch Holdings, sources tell Action News. Having resigned last week as president and CEO of the Pistons and their owner, Palace Sports and Entertainment, he now joins the company that owns the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings.

Wilson will be responsible for heading up all the talks surrouding a new stadium for the Detroit Red Wings. The move is right up Wilson's alley considering he was involved in the building of the Palace in Auburn Hills.

He will report directly to Mike Ilitch. It is not yet known if Ken Holland and Dave Dombrowski will report to Wilson.

A press conference could be held as early as Tuesday.

In addition to the Red Wings and Tigers, Ilitch Holdings, Inc. also controls Little Caesars, Olympia Entertainment, Uptown Entertainment and MotorCity Casino Hotel.

Wilson was involved in the building of the Palace in Auburn Hills. That experience could be useful as Ilitch Holdings eyes a new stadium for the Red Wings.

Wow, that is a strange turn of events, especially when there was the whole talking/rumoring about the Wings playing at the Palace next year.

I'm really starting to wonder if Illitch is going to buy the Pistons. Something's up.

i agree.. i'm scared.. hold me

Well as a Pistons fan, I'd rather have him owning the team than Karen Davidson. As a Wings fan, I wouldn't be concerned because he can't go over the cap anyways. As a Tigers fan, it would be a little concerning though, considering how much baseball players are paid.

all this means to me is that we are playing in the palace next year

I don't think its realistic to execute the Wings playing in the Palace, even if for a year. I suspect the Joe will be re-leased for a couple years while a new arena, headed up by Mr. Wilson, is erected.

I'm confused. Why would Dombrowski and Holland answer to Wilson? Would they even be involved at all with building a new stadium? I guess that muts be some internal bureacratic chain of command thing but I don't see the relevance.

I hope they don't share the Palace. The Wings need to be in Detroit. A state of the art arena could be cool but I keep praying they won't give it a corporate name or create really awful sight-lines for the affordable tickets. I love the Joe in that it allows most everyone a good view, close enough to really see the action on the ice. And I hope they don't share an arena, doesn't that create bad ice?

If anyone deserves an arena named after him it's Illitch for saving Detroit sports (especially if he buys the Pistons) and keeping what's left of the city alive. I'd rather have a new place called the Illitch Arena over something like Little Caesars Arena.

I think it has to do with a stronger structure within the organization, not that it's lacking thereof or anything, but to make sure we're doing things the right way for a very long time and everyone's one big happy family.

But anyways, this is good news for the Red Wings as Wilson was the sole reason the Pistons were the best marketed and was a highly valued team in the NBA. I'm afraid he'll probably have more responsibility on the plate since it seems like he'll be controlling more than just the organization venues and plans for a new arena, but I'm sure certain he'll do fine.

After he resigned, I read an article on MLive linked from a PistonsForum thread about there being rumors of Wilson talking to groups about the possible purchase of the Palace, since Karen Davidson is looking at selling it, which could be a reason why Dumars didn't want to get rid of any players before the trade deadline without knowing the future of the team, being up in the air and all. Wilson couldn't comment on it (this is before finding out Illitch hired him), but like others said above, perhaps Illitch is thinking about buying the Pistons as well? I don't know though, I just hope something is figured out with the Pistons because I love all of my Detroit teams, and I certainly hope Illitch buys them because the Pistons future is certainly up in the air right now. Add to that the losing they've gone through, more booing at the Palace than I've heard in a long time and just a bad product on the floor, right now it doesn't look good for them.

Guest Howard He Do It?!

Illitch is not going to buy the Pistons. He is on record as not liking basketball one bit.
