Canada sets record

The only medal the mattered to me was the men's hockey gold.

If this was the only medal we got this Olympics I would be happy. The 14 golds record is just a bonus.

Well look down the rosters. You should have won. No need to come here and gloat about it (and yes that's what people are doing).

No. 90% of this board had the Russians destroying the Canadians in the quarters. When things went the other way around all of a sudden Canada was a favorite again. After having to take the Swiss to a shootout and losing to the Americans people were down on Canada big time and started counting them out because they had to play the Russians.

i think 90% of this board wanted Russia to destroy Canada but im pretty sure most were expecting a close game.

Yes but if you go look in the GDT for the quarterfinals you will see that people didn't just want them too win but they thought Russia had a more talented team.

Would you rather have Crosby or Olympic threads?

Ideally we'd have neither. Oh and goaltending threads. None of those.

In the Crosby threads and goaltending threads at least people are only stupid though.

Here a lot of people are stupid and rude.

Edit: And now of course we get the double whammy of Crosby Olympic threads. Ugh.

Very proud to be Canadian tonight! 14 Gold medals is impressive and obviously winning mens hockey was a relief! USA did a lot better than I think anyone expected and had me sweating bullets for the whole 3rd period and OT. s***ty that Crosby scored but glad to have it regardless.

Congratulations to USA representing their country so greatly. Top of the medal count is definitely something to be proud of! Canada will hopefully be their one day. Best Olympics I can remember in a long time though.

The 2 week break from the NHL has been great but definitely excited to get back into it now :) Bring on the Avs!!!

Dont forget line threads, although those aren't really that bad. They are just very over abundant.

Curling shouldn't count as a sport, though, so that lessens the feat somewhat.

 Have you ever played? I felt the same way until I want with some guys and girls after work/school one day. Now we have a bit of a team thing going with the other grad students that work with me at the biomed building. It's a fun way to spend an evening.

Is it fairly common in Canada for people to play (or whatever you would call it) curling? Serious question, I probably wouldn't even know what curling was if it weren't for the olympics.

Yes, tons of adults play it, while some kids play it

Everybody in here needs to grow up some.

BOTH countries did very well overall in winning/medal representation.

It's not all that hard to be proud of your country without belittling the other. I'm all for friendly jabs and ribbing, but some of you all are embarassing yourselves.

wow. lot of nonsense bickering on this thread. Let me just comment on the original post. If the poster would have said something like this instead, no one would have a problem.

With Canada sealing the deal on the hockey game they set a record for most golds at a single WinterOlympics.

What a fitting way to set the record, proving hockey belongs to Canada with Gold in both men's and women's.

A great day to be Canadian.

And before anyone brings up the USA medal count, yeah we get it you guys were the 1st loser and the second loser more then us but we have the most gold which is what really matters!

If that post was mentioned first, I would reply this way.

Thank you Canada for being a great host country and congratulations on the gold medal record.

Congrats to both Canadian Hockey teams on gold. Great job, you deserved to win...no questions. On the gold medal count, good job as well. However, the theory above on losers really doesn't help the Canadian cause. If we are the 2nd and 3rd place biggest losers....doesn't that make your Canadian atheletes even bigger losers because they didn't even get on the podium? Those athelets weren't even close, not even in the discussion? I don't follow?

However, quite honestly thought they fell way short as serving as the host nation for these games. As I've been talking to other people the since the games started many shared some of the same thoughts I did. Besides the debacle(s) in the opening ceremonies, the questions surrounding the luge course and the events of a man tragically losing his life (R.I.P.), the 21 year old Canadian drunken fight environment of the Olympic Village/Vancouver which more than a few of the international press deemed as "idiot village", and the sad fact many people came away from this Olympics with still little understanding of the history of Vancouver and Canada (okay, except for pounding down our throats five times a night that Alex P. Keaton, the guy from Will and Grace, and some actor that looks famous but don't know exactly who she is are from Canada and Canada offfers such activities such as snow skiing, standing in the forest, whales, and golf courses) .....it was pretty good.

Good to have the NHL back though.

I agree. We aren't the best in total medals. Don't even come close in the summer. So when we accomplish something why do guys have to come in here and belittle that achievement?

As I stated in an earlier post,

As an American that has lived within an hour of the border much of my life (equidistant from Windsor and Sarnia, and now closer to Vancouver than Seattle), and crossed it often for both work and recreation, I have a lot of 2nd hand pride in many things Canadian. I like to belt out Oh Canada at the games, prefer Maelle Rickert to Hollywood Lindsay Vonn, Nellie Furtado over Brittney Spears, would rather watch Rick Mercer than Steven Colbert; have a much bigger emotional attatchment to Stevie Y and Mike Babcock than Brian Burke and Ron Wilson; listen to Vancouver's Team 1040 instead of L.A.'s Jim Rome, prefer the feal of a sweet one timer slapshot than the sweet spot of a good golf drive , and I am planted in my seat in front of the big screen to see the handoff succession of The Stanley Cup, but am usually out riding or paddling instead of watching the Super Bowl at all.

Of course I realize it's not easy being America's next door neighbor, especially when you are outnumberred 300 million people to 35 million. We, of course, can be quite overbearing and self centerred . I think this helps breed the comradary I see amongst so many of my Canadian friends, much more so than with Americans.

So here's to the largest unfortified border in the world, and while my patriot pride wanted the US and the Michigan boys to Gold Medal (don't misunderstand me, I am indeed a very Proud American) , a lot of me wanted Stevie Y to lead Team Canada to it's first Gold on Canadian soil, Pronger and all.

That being said, the answer to your question is because the OP was being a dick about it, refering to our silver and bronze medalists as losers. If the OP would have stopped before that statement, most Americans on LGW would have jumped and with major props for Canada.

My friend's made a bet on the Gold Medal Game: The Canadian friend said that if Canda wins, we have to admit that Canada is simply better at hockey than the US, and always will be. My American friend said,"OK, and if the US wins, you have to admit that Canada is nothing more than America's 51st state, and always will be."

Well look down the rosters. You should have won. No need to come here and gloat about it (and yes that's what people are doing).

I find this hilariously ironic given there were a few Canadians saying this after the US prelim win over Canada. Interesting when, as I mentioned before, the tables are turned.

Maybe the Canadians should do the very same thing as well and whip out all the images of crying babies and pictures of Crosby or the Canadian flag to those who respond to their light hearted jabs, hmm? :)

No doubt. My wife started watching the game and said "how is that I know the enitire Candian team but only recognize Miller and Rafalski and Kane on the American team? I thought they must be all amateurs at first."

?What? Canadians saying the US roster was far better? No way. Conventional Wisdom had Canda competing int he Gold MEdal game while the US would be lucky to compete for the Bronze medal game.

It just means she doesn't pay much attention to the teams the Wings play. I just want to point to the exaggeration that the Canadian team are pros and the US are amateurs.

The US team proved it was on par with the All-Star Canadian roster, not only by besting them in the pre-medal rounds, but having a better tournament record. The Canadian team was not leaps and bounds above the US team.. they were barely good enough to win in sudden death time. That being said, the US was beaten by a better team, even if only slightly better. If the US team can keep this up then certainly the development for US hockey has risen significantly, and perhaps they won't be rated so low. To be fair, I was under the assumption the US team would be lucky to medal, so a silver is certainly way above expectations. And they nearly won the gold.

About gloating.
