Basketball was started in the United States. That doesn't designate ownership of a sport though. No one country owns any sport. Is their heavy American influence in basketball? Yes, but there is a growing influence coming from Europe. A sport is for the enjoyment of playing it and watching it, not owning it.

Actually, I didn't know this until just minutes ago, but basketball was technically invented by a Canadian born PE teacher back in the late 1890's. Strange fact of the day. But anyways...

No... It's a game that many, many countries compete in. Maybe it did start here... but I don't feel any kind of sense of ownership about it. You're starting to muddle the "It's our game" and the "we own this game" statements.
Saying "We own this game" implies dominance. And you guys can certainly claim that.
Saying "It's our game" implies that it's your game and nobody elses.
At the very least... the second statement sounds very, very selfish and insecure. Like I said, I'm just saying that it sounds really dumb when you guys claim ownership of hockey. And you guys do it ALL THE TIME.

Tell the rest of the world to stop sucking at hockey and we won't be so damn arrogant.

Before today you could bring up arguments about why we dont, but right now we're the olympic champs. And have the most players in the league, and pretty much every team in the last decade that has won a cup has heavy canadian influence.
Did Sweden own the sport until today?

Would you rather have Crosby or Olympic threads?

If this was the only medal we got this Olympics I would be happy. The 14 golds record is just a bonus.

Actually, the first form of ice hockey was played by First Nations in Eastern Canada prior to European contact.
