Most unlikely Detroit Red Wings prospect to go big?

Rate this topic

It's got to be either Tatar or Nyquist. Both have set bench marks in their early careers that no Wing prospect has reached in recent memory (Tatar--entry to the AHL in draft year and Nyquist--Hobey Baker favourite). So if you're going to bet on future stars you might as well pick the kids that are doing something none of the other kids in the org have yet.

Though it's unlikely that any of our prospects have superstar potential, I think some of them like Tatar, Kindl, Nyquist and McCollum can certainly have a big impact at 'the show'.

But since you asked for most unlikely, I'm going to go with this Swedish defenseman we drafted with the second-to-last pick in the '09 draft...Adam Almqvist. Apparently, he's got unbelievable hockey sense and tremendous instincts with the puck. He made the jump to Sweden's top league this season after tearing it up at a lower level. The reason we got him so low (pick no. 210, just like Zetterberg exactly 10 yrs. prior) was because of Hakan Andersson's strong recommendation, the fact that he's European and due to his extremely small stature. That sounds like a familiar storyline to me.

Brian Lashoff.

All the tools: big, offensively skiled D-man.

Draft status: Undrafted!!!!!!!!!

He doesn't crack the top 20 in Hockey Future's Red Wings prospects yet he made the USA World Junior Team.

There's your "long shot".

The next Rafalski with way more size.

Pare, lacks size but the puck just follows him. Great jnr #'s and his stats for 2 yrs in Gr aint to bad either PL 128 37g 43a +40 rating. Bareing in mind the Griffs aint been to hot the past couple of years I doubt any other player has close to those stats. Most unlikely Wing Def!

Tatar Nyquist Mursak looks a nice prospected 2/3 line.

Most unlikely does not mean most likely...

I'm guessing the most unlikely to make it big is Adam Almqvist. He's a tiny tiny tiny D-Man that tore up the junior Swedish league and has done an alright job in the Swedish league this year. He seems most likely to be a Rafalski, but he is a longgggg way away from being polished.

To be honnest I don't even thin about this. The transisition to the NHL is a major leap, look at Ericsson ... everyone had high hopes, easily a top 4 D. The way his playing right he can't even keep himself a spot on the team.

My pick as a rookie that I think is going to have the best chance and great career in succeding consistently would be Thomas McCollum.

Sorry about typos at work no time to re-read :hehe: )

Nyquist still should get his due though, the guy was a 4th rounder.

He's also a HB finalist. To me, at least, most unlikely does not mean which lowest drafted prospect at the time has the best chance now to be an impact player. I perceive least likely as in the now.

You see him as a Rafalski type? You mean in terms of offensive ability? That's interesting.

I see him more as a Brad Stuart workhorse type at best.

Either way I just hope he makes it.

I will go with Joakim Andersson! I have an undefined liking for him. He was a third rounder I believe. He won't be "big" though so my honest answer is Lashoff. He was not even drafted and I have been impressed with what I have seen in the World Juniors from him. He seems like a good top 4 guy which is great for a dude who was undrafted.

I'm adding my vote to Adam Almqvist of the Swedish Elite League. He's still young enough that he can put on enough size to make him capable of playing in the NHL. He has the hockey sense that comes along only once every so often and I think if we're patient we may have our future powerplay quarterback (not necessarily our next or anything but one of our future ones).

Go review his numbers, they are absolutely disgustingly good.

I think Landon Ferraro is overlooked big time, I believe he was supposed to go like 14th in the draft and we got him like 30th. I don't hear or see his name alot in prospect talks but ive seen him play a couple times live and seen some videos online i think he is going to be a great player. He's like a Helm type player but with alot better scoring touch.
