3/27 OOT Gameday

Not for regular GDTs or anything like that. I just felt an OOT GDT was in order. :hehe:

why not!? you = best.

whywho...let's see here.

best case scenario:

boston over calgary

phoenix over colorado

dallas over LA

obviously, detroit over nashville.

all games end in regulation (no 3-point games!!)

if that happens, wings leapfrog col and LA and are tied with nashville for 5th! :o actually, technically we'd be in fifth alone because of fewer games played. LA and col would still both have a game in hand over us, however.

5. det 91pts 7 GR

6. nsh 91pts 6 GR

7. LA 90pts 8 GR

8. col 89pts 8 GR

-

9. cgy 83pts 7 GR

if this happens (or really, if we win and cgy loses in regulation), cgy can gain a maximum of 14 points in their last seven games, giving them 97 points. thus, our magic number is 7 points. any combination of us getting seven points or cgy missing out on seven points in the last seven games clinches us a spot.

worst case scenario:

calgary wins.

colorado wins.

la wins.

nashville wins in regulation.

in that case, we're still in eighth, but in an even less favorable position than we are now.

5. nsh 93pts 6 GR

6. LA 92pts 8 GR

7. col 91pts 8 GR

8. det 89pts 7 GR

-

9. cgy 85pts 7 GR

if this happens, cgy can get as many as 99 points in their remaining games, meaning that our magic number would be 11. with seven games left, we'd have to go 4-0-3/5-1-1 or better (that of course assumes cgy wins every game).

ignoring overall position, and just in terms of clinching, right now our magic number is 11. if we get eleven points in our last 8 games, we clinch even if cgy gets all possible points. eleven point in eight games should not be hard at all.

but, damn, a magic number of seven with seven games left looks awesome. we could go 3-3-1 and still clinch. LET'S GO WINGS!

edit: i looked through the wings schedule this year and, that i could find (i didn't spend too much time working it out) there have only been two seven-game stretches this year where the wings have not gotten seven points. one was feb 3-mar 3, where we went 2-3-2 (six points); the other was nov 18-28, where we went 2-4-1 (five points). unless i'm overlooking something, those are our two worst seven-game stretches this season, and if calgary looses only one game, even the worst of these skids will still grab us the playoffs if we win and calgary looses tonight.

obviously, my figuring all of this out is a complete waste of time if that doesn't happen.

WOW I didnt think we were that close to clinching a spot! I was thinnking we had to win 6 of the remaining 8 to make it! Thats a great breakdown of what needs to happen! I just hope we roll out all wins and then the game against Chicago won't mean anything on April 11th!! Thats what I am hoping for!!

Ah but that game against Chi does matter grasshopper. At this point it's all about letting them know what they can possibly look forward to.

We need to head in to the playoffs strong like bull, not weak like Penguin.

edit: Hit post before I complimented the OP on a nice job.

Yeah I agree with ya about that! But I just think if both teams have nothing to play for, that they will rest as many players as possible! Of course with the salary cap, we may not have that choice!

If we win all our games before that, and Chicago gets less than 6 points in their remaining games, that game on the last day of the season will be for the Division Championship.

Now, I realize that Chicago's melt down hasn't been THAT bad, but give that they just lost 8-3 to the BLUE JACKETS, it's possible for them to only pick up 5 points in their next 9 games. If we win out, we'll have 105 points. 5 points for the Hawks would give them 104. If we won that last game, we'd take the division.

How crushing would THAT be for them? Be the div leader for the whole season and then lose it on the last day? It's still possible.

I don't think it's very likely Chicago will collapse bad enough honestly. I would love to take 4th spot though, that way we are at least not guarenteed to play on the road to start every series, and can avoid one of those big boys in the first round. As much as I think we match up and scare the begeezes out of all top 3 teams right now, I'd still like to avoid them for a round. The wings generally get their juices flowing starting the 2nd round. The first always seems to be tough for Detroit. Maybe this year will be different since we have had to play hard all the way up to the playoffs. But you still would like to avoid those big boys.

Chicago's Defense is banged up and their goalies suck. Just hope Niemi doesn't somehow get on a hot streak.

That game for Chicago might mean "If we beat Detroit, we can avoid them in the first round". I think it will make a difference somehow.

By the way, the calgary/boston game is huge today, for obvious reasons. Boston needs 2 points to stay in 8th, Calgary needs 2 points to keep any hope alive of catching us. It would be too good to be true for Calgary to lose today and really take the pressure off.

I have a feeling Detroit isn't paying any more attention to them. I think they are looking at the Preds now, and worrying about moving up, not worried about moving out.

I think it's pathetic that the west is SO MUCH STRONGER than the east. If the Pens were in this conference, they'd be 2 points away from being 9th. LOL

The east's 5, 6, 7, and 8 seeds wouldn't even be in the playoffs right now in the west.

Does anyone feel sorry for the Calgary fans? This has to be one of their worst seasons in a decade. The team looks great the first half, then falls apart in the 3rd quarter, so the GM trades two of their best star players in hopes of creating a spark, now their all but eliminated from the play-offs. No matter how this season plays out, Calgary's fans should be pissed off. Those "knee jerk" trades were a bad idea at the time, and now look even worse. In all likely hood, those trades set Calgary back at least 2-3 years in terms of competing for the Cup.

Unbelievable disallowed goal in the Pens Flyers game involving Leino. Can't even begin to describe. Wow NHL, just wow.

I was just thinking the same exact thing...! I love how the commentators were discussing the goal and stated that there was no way it could be called back because the play was not reviewable, and then the goal gets called back. (side note - it was goal tender interference)

I had a feeling Calgary would fall apart after losing to the Islanders. It would take a lot for them to pull together after a loss like that, knowing that they have to win pretty much every game in order to have a chance at the playoffs.

3-0 Boston. I'm going out on a limb here and saying WE ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS! :)

Congrats Wings, looks to be we might just make it afterall. The amazing thing is that we're only 2 points out of 5th place! Looks like the top 4 will remain the top 4, their order to be determined. A 4-5 pairing of Phoenix and Detroit wouldn't be too shabby.

Maybe I missed something, but why is Hartnell getting this penalty - Crosby took him to the boards and they both fell down... why a penalty in the first place?

and they score on the pp...
