Wings off season moves.

1) Assuming the reports of a $57.7m cap are true

2) Assuming Jiri Hudler returns to the Wings

Then we are looking at a Wings roster starting from a base of seven forwards, five defensemen, and two goaltenders with a combined cap hit of $43,662,876 which means the team needs to sign six more forwards and two more defensemen, plus perhaps one additional skater, and has $14,037,124 in cap space to do it with.

Free agent skaters from this year's roster:

Forwards:

RFA: Abdelkader, Eaves, Helm, Miller, Ritola

UFA: Bertuzzi, Holmstrom, Maltby, May, Williams

Defense:

RFA: Meech

UFA: Janik, Lebda, Lidstrom, Lilja

Likely, the Wings will sign six forwards and three defensemen, and leave the 23rd roster slot empty.

So the situation is, who do you add to the roster?

F: Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, Filppula, Hudler, Cleary, Draper.

D: Rafalski, Stuart, Kronwall, Ericsson, Kindl

G: Osgood, Howard

The Wings need some bottom-six forwards. They also need to re-sign Lidstrom, or sign another top-pairing defenseman to replace him.

We'll go with a couple of reasonable assumptions here.

1) Older players with a history of injury who have accomplished major goals and suffered major injury recently often end up retiring.

2) The Wings have recently been looking towards getting younger, while retaining a focus on home-grown players as much as possible.

3) The Wings' playing style focuses on two-way play and puck possession, but with an added element of grit and physicality that is often overlooked because their star players are not as gritty as their support players.

So; We'll say that Maltby and Lilja are likely to retire. Holmstrom and Bertuzzi both are possibilities for retirement as well. The Wings will likely re-sign forwards Abdelkader, Eaves, Helm, and Miller, and will probably keep one of Homer or Bert, most likely Homer. Overall, expect a total of $5.5m-$6m spent on these forwards. On defense, Lidstrom is likely to return, and the Wings are unlikely to place either Ericsson or Kindl in a 7th defenseman role; it is more likely they will shake up the defensive pairings and we see less of Lids/Raffi and Kronner/Stuart with Ericsson and Kindl slipping in on shifts with skilled vets. Meech is the most likely defenseman to be signed for the 7th defenseman role, as he has proven effective when called upon, and the Wings are unlikely to sign a defenseman who makes more than Kindl or Ericsson specifically for the 7th defenseman role when for peanuts they can retain a young, home-grown defenseman like Meech who is developing well into a solid all-around defenseman.

As far as the defense situation goes, let Lebda and Meech go and bring up Kindl and re-sign Janik.

I like Cleary but he's overpaid for 3rd line winger...

Trade Hudler - there is no roster space for him on 2 top lines...

Bring up Kindl and sign Carkner or Erskine as 7th def...

Lids - Rafalski

Carkner/Erskine

If Lids is gone - trade for Kaberle and sign Corvo or Kubina

Uhh..... Lilja is 34 (not retiring). Holmstrom is 37, but has already stated he'd like to return and more than likely will, he's had another strong season. Bertuzzi is 35 (again, not retiring). If Bert will take 1.5 mil again, I wouldn't be suprised if we re-sign him. he's a strong player who can play 2nd line or 3rd line and that's just smart depth, plus his defensive play has picked up and he hasn't taken as many boneheaded penalties so he's become a stronger player with this team.

This is the way I envision it, with minimal changes to the roster from this past season:

Franzen - Datsyuk - Holmstrom (13 mil)

Filppula - Zetterberg - Hudler (11.9 mil)

Cleary - Helm - Eaves (4.8 mil)

Miller - Abdelkader - Draper (3.1 mil)

13th forward swapping out with Draper: Barch, Nichol, Mair (Basically someone who is versatile and possibly physical - ala Brad May) (.600)

Lidstrom - Rafalski (10 mil)

Stuart - Kronwall (6.8 mil)

Lilja - Ericsson (2.2 mil)

Meech or Kindl (I can see us possibly trading Kindl since he hasn't exactly lived up to expectations in GR) (.600)

Howard

Osgood (My thoughts is we'll let his contract run out, but he has been a positive influence on Howard and mentoring him very well, so I say keep him around at least until after next season)

(2.2 mil)

Grand Total: $55.2 Million Dollars

I'm sure I'm way off, but this would be a solid (healthy) roster and we would be in the race again next season. There are a few variables, I figured Lidstrom would resign for $4 mil just like Yzerman took less his last couple of years in order to help the team out. These figures don't include Bertuzzi, however I feel they'll try and fit him in somehow, just not sure if that means they'll let Miller or Eaves go... but I hope not. I could see Miller being expendable, but his PK has been outstanding, could be solid since Maltby is gone now and Draper is next up. Still wish we could add an outright scoring machine much like Hossa or Kovalchuk, but not likely to ever happen.

I like Cleary but he's overpaid for 3rd line winger...

Kaberle - Rafalski

Corvo/Kubina - Kronwall

Stuart - Ericsson/Kindl

As much as I like Kaberle, he is not known to be very strong on the defensive side of the game... Not who i'd like to see replace Lidstrom's role. Although that's going to be a very big pair of skates to fill.

Trade Hudler - there is no roster space for him on 2 top lines...

Most of the rosters being posted have Hudler on the first or second line.

To post lines from my roster earlier:

Cleary/Datsyuk/Holmstrom

Franzen/Zetterberg/Hudler

Miller/Filppula/Abdelkader

Draper/Helm/Eaves

Ritola

Lidstrom/Rafalski

Kronwall/Ericsson

Kindl/Stuart

Meech

Howard

Osgood

Bring up Kindl and sign Carkner or Erskine as 7th def...

Lids - Rafalski

Kronwall - Stuart

Ericsson - Kindl

Carkner/Erskine

So spend more than $1m on a guy who will probably play 20-30 games? Intelligent use of the cap.

If Lids is gone - trade for Kaberle and sign Corvo or Kubina

Kaberle - Rafalski

Corvo/Kubina - Kronwall

Stuart - Ericsson/Kindl

Trading for Kaberle makes sense; the question is, what do we give up?

They might take a 1st pick plus a prospect or two like McGrath or Oulahen. But at that point, you don't have the money or space to ALSO sign Corvo/Kubina. The 5/6/7 will be Ericsson/Kindl and one of Meech or Lilja. The only two questions are whether Lids returns, and whether Meech or Lilja is back. It's even possible that the Wings decide that, if Lids retires, to go with Kronwall/Rafalski/Stuart/Lilja/Ericsson/Kindl/Meech as the defensive corps.

I'd love to see Carkner or Erskine here.Shane O'Brien would be nice too.I don't think Kindl will be a definite 6th spot pairing with Ericsson.Signing a defensive defensemen with some experience makes sense. The list goes on and on as far as possible shut down defensemen we could bring in for cheap.Lidstrom will be back next year the way i see it.

Why would you break up

Franzen - Dats - Homer or

Bert - Flip - Zetterberg ???

Let's not forget that Cleary started season on 1st line - and finished on the 3rd line. He very good 3rd liner but let's be honest here, Cleary on the 1st line is CRAZY.

Flip is 2nd line player and let keep him on 2nd line - more he play, better he plays. Hudler is nice player but is the last thing we need right now - another small/soft skilled player, it should be NO THANKS.

Abdelkader is not winger and he CAN'T play as a winger - he need/play as CENTER - keep that in your mind.

Ericsson top 4 def - not sure about that one either.

Erskine is $1.25M / Carkner is $.5M - You need to replace Lilja (he will never be the same) by one of them or someone similar...

Trading for Kaberle - well I would trade Hudler and maybe a prospect for Kaberle (IF LIDS IS GONE). Going after Corvo or Kubina it's NEED - we have only 1 RH Def. It provides you better option than keeping Williams at the point - something that most of posters also wanted.

EDIT: Good luck with your 2nd PP unit...

Miller and Eaves why ? we dont need both as much as i like Miller, Eaves is a better player and will be the one that stays. To keep Millers 19pts over Berts 45pts would be crazy almost as crazy as Cleary on line 1.

Franzen-Datsyuk-Holmstrom

Zetterberg-Filppula-Hudler

Cleary-Abdelkader-Bertuzzi

Eaves-Helm-Draper

Ritola

Lidstrom-Rafalski

Kronwall-Stuart

Lilja-Ericcson

Kindl

if Lids retires Willie Mitchell id try and pick up

Kronwall-Rafalski

Mitchell-Stuart

Lilja-Ericcson

Kindl

Maybe a backup keeper...

There are no goalies in the league better than Osgood who would cost the Wings as much or less than Osgood.

Goalies who:

1) Have lower cap hits than Osgood

2) Have deals for next season

3) Would potentially be upgrades in skill

Are:

Tuukka Rask, Bos $1.25m

Steve Mason, Clb $905k

Semyon Varlamov, Wsh $822k

Rask is the only goalie there who is not on an entry level deal. He signed a two year deal with Boston coming off his entry level deal, and signed it expecting to back up Tim Thomas, the reigning Vezina winner.

None of these goalies would be acquirable without giving up significant assets. The chances of Howard being a required piece of the deal is likely, meaning to acquire any of them as backup would mean they are backing up Osgood. There are no UFA goalies who would be upgrades, so what exactly do you suggest?

If i'm not mistaken, Ritola has to come up like Kindl does or we loose him. I do however have strange new feelings about a Miller - Abdelkader - Eaves line. I likes.

Let's look at this lineup from a cap hit perspective. Oh, and we're adding Ritola because he's out of options.

14 skaters currently signed for a $43,662,876 cap hit.

F: Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, Filppula, Hudler, Cleary, Draper

D: Rafalski, Stuart, Kronwall, Ericsson, Kindl

G: Osgood, Howard

So add RFA contract deals for:

The next four are all PK specialists receiving small raises

Helm ($1m)

Miller ($750k)

Abdelkader ($1m)

Eaves (1m, his raise is likely slightly bigger than the other three due to his buyout ending)

Ritola (650k, minor raise pluse a promotion to the NHL)

and UFA deals for

Holmstrom ($2m, he'll probably take a paycut if he doesn't retire)

Bertuzzi ($2.5m, as he'll want some thing more than $1.5m because his buyout is ending - He is making $3m this season, half from the Ducks.)

Lidstrom ($4.5m tops to allow for more cap space)

Lilja (1m, if not less assuming he doesn't retire due to injuries)

Let's see how that adds up.

Overall, with these numbers, it goes over the cap by $363k. Without Ritola, obviously it does not. Probably some players' cap hits will be different to a degree, but the overall should be fairly similar if you try and keep all of these players. It's likely only one of Bertuzzi and Holmstrom return, which would solve the cap issue quickly and easily.

Why is everybody so intent on having Hudler back? i dont think thats what we need. i think that abdelkader should train hard this off season and bring him up to atleast the 3rd line. I think he has amazing potential, hes so young, has so much heart and is such a great defensive forward.

I think your being a little niave, I believe lids is tied for points as defensemen in these playoffs so far and is leading the goals category too I believe (if not top 3), he still is one of the top defensemen in the league and I think 6 million would be reasonable considering that gives us some breathing room.. 4.5-5 would be a insult
