Looks like we will get an up close look at the new kids!

Sorry, your title is incorrect, the Wings did not "assign" Ferraro to Grand Rapids. Michael Zuidema's article at MLive states

"The Griffins signed the 18-year-old center to an amateur tryout Tuesday, and he skated in his first practice at Van Andel Arena after the team photo."

Isn't that pretty much the same thing?

Nice this will be nice to get a measure of how Landon can play against the big boys. I've got him pegged as top 2 liner hopefully in the NHL and he's pretty much guaranteed to make the NHL with his speed and checking ability.

I don't care if ppl say he thinks too highly of himself, he's in junior he'll grow up and realize he isn't the best thing around once he goes pro.

Technically no. The advantage to having this situation not involve the Red wings making an assignment is that these games don't make the season count towards the player's max AHL time in terms of their waiver eligibility.

When the Wings "assigned" Tatar to the Griffins the 4 year clock started for him (the window technically started after 9 AHL games). That means that by the time Tatar's 22 years old he won't be eligible to play in the AHL without having passed through waivers (and thus being exposed to 29 other teams as a free pick-up).

However, if the Griffins sign a player to an amateur try-out when their season in another league ends that's a choice that does not start the 4 year clock for that player.

So, in essence, the ATO gives the Wings and Griffins the opportunity to use non-AHL kids for the remainder of the season (and playoff if they were able to make them) as an evaluation tool without ticking the clock down on that 4 year window.

And on top of that if you have CHL rights and are junior eligible you can't technically be on the team (unless you are foreign), so an ATO allows them to practice with the team and possibly get a game or few in since they aren't actually signed to the team.
