From what I've read the knock on him was that he wasn't strong enough defensively. The last d-man to win the Hobey was recognized as being very good defensively as well as offensively.

Smith's more of a run and gun guy right now.

I haven't watched enough of him to know whether or not he deserved it (I've heard his defensive game can be sketchy), but the bolded part is extremely true.

It sucks that smith didn't make it, but look at nyquist a sophomore leading in scoring and we got him in the forth round.It maybe another gem that the wings have found.

exactly, IF Smith is esstaintly the Mike Green of college, can people on here who thought it was buls*** Green was up for anything complain about Smith not making it. I know the Hobey isn't just for d man like the Norris, but I don't know if they have a straight award for defense in college.

Yeah I like Smith and everything. I think he has a bright future, but this year he was essentially a 4th forward. He needs some big improvement in the defensive zone.
