3 Days in Detroit - All things Wings?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I have been a Wings fan for around 15 years and I am FINALLY going to Detroit. My wife set it all up for my 34th B-day! I am from Chicago and have never been to Detroit before. I have suffered through the "Detroit Sucks" chant at the United Center for long enough! I will be in town the 6th, 7th and 8th and want to do ALL-THINGS-WINGS. I want to check out Hockeytown Cafe and of course the game is on the 7th, other than that, what else can we do? Is there a chance of seeing the morning skate at the Joe? Is Chelis Chili place still there? I'm open, let me know...

GO WINGS!!

I live in Texas, so whenever I'm in Hockeytown I make sure to swing by Hockeytown Authentics.

I'm over from Scotland for a number of games and will be in town also at that time. On the 7th I'm going to watch the College practice sessions down at Ford Field (open to public) before heading over to Cobo Joe's on the way to the game. I'll probably have lunch down at Cheli's place across from Comerica before I go to the Frozen Four semifinal games on the 8th. Give me a shout if you want to hook up.

Good idea, just be aware that this is a good 30 minutes outside of Detroit. If you have time, totally worth it though.

You might also want to check out some of the local haunts pre-game. The Detroiter near Greek Town offers free shuttles to and from the game full of rowdy fans... and you can park for free (or at least you used to be able to) at the Greek Town Casino which is only a hop skip and a jump away. Post game, you can take the People Mover (or walk, it isn't far at all) back to Greek Town to enjoy some of the local nightlife. Greek Town is central to many of the other attractions called out here as well (Ford Field, Cheli's, etc).

If you're still here on the 8th, and have time, and a passport, The Whalers are playing at Windsor in Game #4 of their playoff series. Great rivalry, plus 2 of the top NHL prospects playing. If you do go, best to get tickets now. If you're into nostalgia, you could take a drive to Grand River/McGraw, not too far from downtown. There's a light guard armory there now, but that's where the Olympia once stood.

After the game, you should people mover to Greek Town because if they win the chanting and high-fives are found there. But Chelis and Hockeytown are nice choices too.

Also, check the Tiger at Comerica and see if it has a massive Wings jersey on. There is a GIANT picture on the side of Hockeytown facing the expressway if you want a picture with it.

Check if there's anything Wings related next to Hockeytown Authentics at Troy Sports Center. Maybe you can open skate there and say you skating on the "office practice ice" at the "official training facility of the Detroit Red Wings".

Ask anyone you see with a jersey on or anyone at these places for any further ideas. Finally, check the website and here to see if there are any placer appearances or signings or open practices.

Not sure where the guy's autoshop is at, but the dude has a Red Wings monster truck type limousine that is usually around the Joe during playoffs games. You could try and find it and get a picture with it.

The limo is owned by Express Entertainment.

They are located on Telegraph Rd., just south of Warren Rd.

Definitely make a trip to Hockeytown Authentics. Cheli's is still alive and well - there's actually two of them. If you have a car, you can drive out to the original on Michigan Ave. in Dearborn. Also drive out to Novi/Northville...the Swedes all hang out there (except for Henrik), and you never know who you might see.
