Travis 576 Report post Posted April 23, 2010 (edited) The Norris Finalists were announced on NHL Live as being Mike Green, Duncan Keith, and Drew Doughty. Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings, Mike Green of the Washington Capitals and Duncan Keith of the Chicago Blackhawks are the finalists for the 2009-10 Norris Trophy. None are older than 26, the three Canadians finished 1-2-3 among defensemen in scoring, and one will be a first-time winner of the honor. The James Norris Memorial Trophy is presented annually "to the defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position." The winner is selected in a poll by the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season. The winner of the trophy will be announced at the 2010 NHL Awards, to be held in Las Vegas on June 23. The ceremony will be broadcast live from the Pearl Concert Theater inside the Palms Hotel Las Vegas on VERSUS in the United States and CBC in Canada. Here is a closer look at the finalists... http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=526744 Edited April 23, 2010 by Travis
RedWingedKitten 9 Report post Posted April 23, 2010 Mike Green? Oh this won't end well. I'll be leaving the boards for a while.

Carman 387 Report post Posted April 23, 2010 /crosses fingers for no Mike Green. I don't have an issue with either Doughty or Keith, both are great young defensemen. I think Keith had a little better year all around though. 1 stevieisthebest reacted to this
seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted April 23, 2010 I think Keith gets it, but I'd absolutely love to see Doughty win it. And the day Mike Green wins the Norris is the day... well it's the day I don't agree with the Norris voters. 1 Hockeymom1960 reacted to this

I think Keith had a little better year all around though. Keith was better and deserves it. Doughty should be second (he was not as good defensively as Keith but was incredibly flashy and is noticed every time he is on the ice), with either Lidstrom or Pronger (maybe) as third. Green's offense on a purely offensive team does not deserve a mention at all. 1 Hockeymom1960 reacted to this

T-Ruff 47 Report post Posted April 23, 2010 Green's defensive play has been improving this year from what I saw, but he's still not even close to Norris league. I think the 3rd nomination should have gone to Weber. I'm hoping to see Doughty win it, and I think he would be deserving. It is a two horse race though without a doubt. 1. Doughty 2. Keith 3. Green During a caps game I watched at the end of the season, the announcers (while they are great) were showing and talking about Green's stats pre-game and said "He should be a slam dunk for the Norris trophy". I had a laugh
Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted April 23, 2010 No surprise. Keith deserves the honor, although in the playoffs (which obviously don't count, but just for discussion's sake) Doughty has been an absolute beast whereas Keith has been quiet.

Guest mindfly Report post Posted April 23, 2010 First year in a loooong time that Lidstrom isn't even nominated... another reason why he probably will retire.... end of an era.. peace out

hooon 1,089 Report post Posted April 23, 2010 Give it to Doughty. Keith got pretty shaky towards the last month of the regular season.

softshoes 83 Report post Posted April 23, 2010 No Lids, the first step of withdrawal. Imagine if they give it to Green, a Norris winner that didn't make his Olympic team.

Travis 576 Report post Posted April 23, 2010 i guess they just go by points huh not actually defensive capability Much like the Selke is given to the best defensive forward, the Norris will now be awarded to the best offensive defenseman.
Electrophile 3,554 Report post Posted April 23, 2010 It's weird not seeing Nick's name up for nomination, but you knew he couldn't be nominated forever.
egroen 384 Report post Posted April 23, 2010 I'm curious if there is a single GM in the NHL who would have preferred Green on his team this year over Lidstrom... even knowing their point totals ahead of time. 2 GoWings1905 and seeinred reacted to this
RedWingAbner 13 Report post Posted April 23, 2010 Can we stop with Mike Green please? It'd be akin to playing with 4 forwards, the 4th being listed as a defenseman. Yep, his point totals ARE going to be decent. But he's not a good defenseman. I am surprised that we aren't seeing guys just decide they stand a better chance of getting an award bonus by not playing forward and switching back to defense. Next year, Ovechkin is the #1 defenseman on Washington.
AIK'91 22 Report post Posted April 23, 2010 Maybe they just got tired of voting for Lidstrom each year? It's important to note though, a lot of these awards are based purely on stats. Many of the voters (in this case, from the Professional Hockey Writers' Association) often only get to see each team play a handful of games since it's almost impossible to follow all 30 teams very closely. So in the end, they tend to look at the numbers too much. Nick is still the most reliable defenseman in the game. There isn't another guy you'd want on the blueline at the end of a close game. That still makes him the best.
b.shanafan14 733 Report post Posted April 23, 2010 They are really going to need a Bobby Orr award if they are going to nominate players like Green. Like the opposite of a Selke, best offensive defenseman instead of defensive forward. Green is absolute s*** on defense, period. Half the goals Stamkos scored this season were when he was playing the point I believe, what stops them from nominating him?
dropkickshanahans 463 Report post Posted April 23, 2010 No Lids, the first step of withdrawal. Imagine if they give it to Green, a Norris winner that didn't make his Olympic team. That's what I was thinking as well. And with his league leading 76 points for defensemen, he'll probably win it as well since the Norris is all about who has the most points apparently. Guest Crymson Report post Posted April 23, 2010 That's not surprising. Lidstrom's performance in the first half of the season was below his normal level of play.
