stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted April 26, 2010 People keep making comments/posts about trying to sign him in the off-season and I just don't see any way this is possible, regardless of how enticing and intriguing it is... even if Nick hangs them up at years end AND the cap goes up to the reported 57.7... there's no way we can afford him, some team will throw some INSANE contract at him (8 mil + a season), which we cannot match and even if he took a discount to come here and play with Dats, our defense would take a MAJOR hit (I'm not ready for Kindl to jump right in and play every day) by not using the new space to address the D - Ilya Kovalchuk ($6.900m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($6.700m) / Tomas Holmstrom ($2.000m) Jiri Hudler ($2.875m) / Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Johan Franzen ($3.955m) Daniel Cleary ($2.800m) / Valtteri Filppula ($3.000m) / Drew Miller ($0.800m) Justin Abdelkader ($0.900m) / Darren Helm ($0.950m) / Patrick Eaves ($0.900m) Kris Draper ($1.583m) Niklas Kronwall ($3.000m) / Brian Rafalski ($6.000m) Jakub Kindl ($0.883m) / Brad Stuart ($3.750m) Jonathan Ericsson ($0.900m) / Andreas Lilja ($1.000m) Derek Meech ($0.500m) Jimmy Howard ($0.717m) / Chris Osgood ($1.417m) ROSTER: 22; PAYROLL: $57.213m; CAP ROOM: $0.087m BONUSES: $0.000m
Lidstrom for life 20 Report post Posted April 26, 2010 Agreed, its not going to happen. It would take some ridiculous trade to free up the cap room and I just don't see that happening. Also, if Lidstrom retires there is no way we don't sign a veteran defenseman.

stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted April 26, 2010 He'll want to go to the KHL, where he can make some real $$$. There's no way he goes to the KHL... 1. The KHL is going to fold within a few years 2. He is too competitive and wants to play in the best league in the world (NHL) 3. 8+ mil a year in the NHL > 12 mil a year in Russia

stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted April 26, 2010 thatd be one stacked ******* offense defense is meh for sure, like I said, I can DEFINITELY see the intrigue and him on Dats wing makes me happy in the pants, but our D would suffer too greatly and I can't see him taking that money anyway... too greedy
Guest EZBAKETHAGANGSTA Report post Posted April 26, 2010 (edited) I'm a huge Kovalchuk fan, and would normally be estatic with the chance of adding him, but if Lidstrom retires, that money better be ******* going to some defense depth. How much will Volchenkov get in the open market do you think? for sure, like I said, I can DEFINITELY see the intrigue and him on Dats wing makes me happy in the pants, but our D would suffer too greatly and I can't see him taking that money anyway... too greedy sane/normal acting Edited April 26, 2010 by EZBAKETHAGANGSTA

How much will Volchenkov get in the open market do you think? you and I are definitely on the same page... I'd guess he'd probably get a little raise, but nothing too significant, as he is a damn good d-man, but doesn't really add anything offensively... I'd guess anywhere from 3-4 a year? This ploy worked well last year for another player. no way possible, 5 mil a year untaxed, compared to 2.5 taxed, at 25 years old when you've made less than that total in your NHL career up to that point(I'm assuming you're referring to Hudler) is NOT the same as 12 mil a year compared to 8+ to stay in the best league in the world, as a 27 year old, who has already made at least 30 million through his career to this point He is still a competitor and wants to be in the NHL - he will not go to the KHL and you can quote me on that. I'd throw 3.75 mill at him, though there may be other better D available as I haven't taken a hard look at the UFA's. In anycase, the emergence of Filppula as a bonafide top 6er/50-60+ point player and the return of Hudler should be more than enough offensive addition to warrent an aquitistion like Kovy as extrenuous. Seidenberg is available and would provide more pts, but I like Volchenkov's style... I really don't see Ottawa letting him get away though... It's actually a pretty lean year for FA's as far as puck moving defensemen and most of the better one are 35+ Edited April 26, 2010 by stevkrause

I'd put Anton with Raffi, as they would compliment each other well with one being generally offense orietned and the other being a pure shutdown player. Regardless, if Lid's retires, it is really Kronwall's time to either shine and show the number one pairing talent we all know he has, or continue to underperfore in comparison to ability. Guest EZBAKETHAGANGSTA Report post Posted April 26, 2010 A team like detroit who always had taken great pride in playing great defense makes that lineup look very wrong.. kronwall as your number 1 D...Nightmare! While it will be an adjustment, I really think if we get a Volchenkov like player, we would still have a balanced and well above average Defensive Core. This team is going to look different without Lidstrom for sure, but I can see us building our D like a better Version of Phoenix's in which you have 6 Above Average defensemen who are often specialists, in comparison to Lidstrom's do it all. As long as each player does their role, this setup can be just as effective, and when going much less risky in terms of injury/depth.

Much rather get Derek Morris/Corvo/Mitchell/Hamhuis/White etc. to strengthen the defense. Well, I agree I'd rather strengthen the D, but I don't like your options with the exception of Mitchell... there's a few other FA's I'd rather see them pursue than those listed... Totally forgot about Hamuis, he would be a great addition. I'm just not sold on Hamhuis... don't know why, he's good enough, for some reason, I just don't see him working here...
