Canadiens owe Mike Green

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

So, I believe the Canadiens owe Mike Green a thank you.

Stupid play #1: Cross-checking Markov so blatantly when your rush failed that you get a penalty. Canadiens score. 1-0.

Stupid play #2: What the hell was he doing on that second goal? Did he overskate the puck or just try to start a rush (kidding) and then turn it over? Either way, Dominic Moore scores. 2-0.

Mike Green did not impress last evening.

While Mike Green is probably the player that deserves most of the blame, don't leave the coach out of the criticism. When your team's powerplay was #1 in the regular season, and then goes 1 for 35? that's more than likely more then a player issue...

This.

Everyone already knew going into this thing that Green is a liability, so it's no great surpise. I feel bad for Caps fans who still have 2 years of that 5+ mill contract to go.

The Coaching system is clearly not right. Everyone should just listen to R.J Umberger, he knows his stuff.

There's no question in my mind that Boudreau is not a competent post-season coach. He's absolutely terrible. 3 home game 7 losses in the last 3 years... wow.

mike green is the most overrated player in the NHL. his stats and +/- are high due to the fact that he racks up points 32 games per year playing against tampa, florida, carolina and atlanta. he has no sense of defense whatsoever and should be on the wing.

the only reason he got nominated for the norris is because it's not about all-around ability in the position, it's about the d-man who racks up the most points. i guess he can thank the teams in his division if he actually wins the norris.

it's also his fault now that i have to cheer for the habs against the pens. atleast one of the 2 teams will be gone come ECF.

The sad thing about that is that the description voters are given for the Norris specifies that it should go to the best overall player and thus is intended to go to someone who plays excellent defense AND offense.

I dunno...To me everything rests upon the shoulders of the players though I do get the impression Boudreau is similar to NBA coach Phil Jackson.

Not true whatsoever.

hockey is the consummate TEAM game there is and you need to play like a TEAM to win, whereas basketball can be a bunch of individuals and you can still win... Boudreau could not adjust to the game plan a lesser opponent threw at them and their PP was uncreative and DEAD after being dominant all year...

NBA Coaches Job - Manage Ego's

NHL Coaches Job - COACH

I'm by no means supporting Mike Green but I think it's a little harsh to completely put all of the blame on him for the Habs second goal. When the puck was turned over at the offensive blueline Ovechkin was out of gas and didn;t backcheck what so ever. The puck was flipped over the head of Carlson who lazily skated back to the defensive end and let Moore skate right passed him and pick up the free puck. Green simply lost the foot race and tried to take out the man. Carlson should have picked Moore up as the second man in the zone and been the responsible second defensmen.

Even if Green had narrowly won the foot race to the puck Carlson wasn't even putting himself into position to give Green an outlet pass. It was completely lazy on his part. Take a look at the reply, both Ovechkin and Carlson are coasting while Green is at least trying to get to the loose puck - he lost loses the race.

That being said, I agree, his defense is poor and he got exposed for it this year in the POs just as he did last year and just as he probably will next year. The guy is a PP specialist and when your PP goes cold he's flat out a liability. It's unfortunate what happened for Caps fans this year but hey, they're getting their bumps and maybe they'll be better for it in the long run.

Caps need to find a shut-down defenseman with a semi-decent command of the ice. Heck, Hal Gill looked like a poor-man's Pronger last night by comparison. Not sure who's available via trade or free agency, but this should be the Caps' top priority this summer. (Priority No. 2: surgical implantation of a pair of male testicles in size XXL into the scrotum of Alexander Semin.)

that's exactly why i was pissed when i heard his name. lids could have been nominated above him, as well as boyle, myers, erhoff, chara, even yandle. they all do it better "all-around" than mike green's liable ass.

Guest screwdahawks

No doubt Green screwed up but I put most of the blame on Ovie. Once he got hold of the puck past center ice he NEVER bothered to even look for a teammate to help with the rush. He just kept trying to plow his way to the goal and the Canadians at times had 3 guys on him because they didn't have to worry about him passing off. Same goes for the goalie, all he had to do was concentrate on stopping his shot if he managed to get one off which most of the time he didn't. Pretty tough to do if you have guys hanging all over you....Too bad he thinks he is the only one on the team that can handle the puck or score goals. Caps should have won and probably would have had he not been so pigheaded. Puck hog lost and needs to watch the game tapes and learn from them... Anyone that thinks he is not arrogant is just doing an ostrich game.

I'm not implying that ALL NHL coaches are similar to those of the NBA...I am fully aware of the NHL being the consumate team sport...If you look at my post you'll see that I pointed out Boudreau and Boudreau only.

The way I see it is that the stars on the Caps kinda run that team - hence their early exit.

Fair enough - but that just further proves the point that the loss was Boudreau's fault...

Here's something I can't help but wondering from time to time.. What if sports were like pro-wrestling?

What if, as the game wore down and the Canadiens started celebrating - Mike Green tore off his Capitals jersey and had a Habs sweater on underneath?

I'd definitely put much more blame on Carlson on the 2nd goal than Green, although Green still looked terrible out there.

the veteran is supposed to direct traffic out there, especially with a rookie on the ice with him. therefore, green's fault still. if carlson was out there with lids, you bet your 1st born that kid is in the right place to make the play.

That's much less of a directing traffic play as it is a "holy s***, dude's on a breakaway, I'd better skate my ass of" kinda play. Carlson just completely gave up during the breakaway, you can't blame that on Mike Green at all. Granted, Mike Green didn't do anything to make himself look like a hero, either.

Even as a rookie it's not difficult to know when you need to get your ass back on a play like that. It's not up to Green to be responsible for Carlson's backcheck. Communication is important, but he shouldn't have to yell for help in that situation.

well here's a rebuttal that everyone can agree with:

the caps defence is garbage in general. they are a team with good forwards, mediocre defence and goaltending.

What about the very end where Green whiffed on the puck as he checked his man instead of focusing on getting the puck up ahead or behind the net?
