WCSF Game 2 GDT: Red Wings 3 at Sharks 4

Yeah but the refs took them off their game. The wings were so tentative going down the stretch, scared that if they battled for any puck too hard, one of the Sharks would fall down and they'd be called for it. It's amazing how much of an effect the refs can have. There taking the play to the sharks, then vlasic falls down. Total momentum killer, 5 on 4, pavelski falls, he knows the refs fall for it every time. Such crap, not sure why bettman wants the sharks to win.

How can you make this statement? I mean, seriously? The Wings scored on 2 of 3 powerplays and killed off eight of 10 power plays. They led 3-2 after 20 minutes, created some good chances, rolled over every line pretty effectively and were in position to win TWICE at the No. 1 seed despite getting ass-reamed by Bettman's cronies.

Detroit is the better team. If the refs ever let them show that, they'll win this series.

if detroit is better team,it is time to show it. for every detroit good scoring chance San Jose has had 2 or 3 or so.

I was going to start a thread on this guys, but it's not that important.

Enjoyed being on the board here for several years, and following hockey pretty closely during that time. But, tonight's game was just the last nail in the coffin for me. I've been trying to downplay the screwy non-sensical reffing for a long time, saying it's just the way the game goes and stuff happens, they try and make it fair, etc.,.

But, after last year's finals (obstruction, anyone?) and the way tonight's game went, I can't really get too excited about the NHL anymore with so much crazy, maddening reffing inconsistency that goes on, far worse than any other sport I've ever watched. Not saying anyone is to blame or it's some kind of conspiracy, not at all, I guess it's just part of this sport and it's just finally turned me totally off now.

I'm going to go spend my time (and entertainment dollars) to find something I can enjoy watching that's more consistent and won't raise my blood pressure to new levels in frustration. Probably motorcycle racing, I'm thinking.

I know this post won't really register on anyone's radar here, since I don't post much, but all the best in your following of the Wings, hope they go the distance this year! Ya won't be seeing any more posts from me.

Peace out, Quadnational....

If you want to lower your blood pressure while watching hockey, play hockey sometime. In fact, the more you play, the better fan of the game you will become. After you play for a while, take up refereeing hockey. Its not easy, but it will give you a whole new appreciation for reffing the game and what goes on in a refs mind.

IMHO, a bulk majority of the people here bitching and complaining about the Wings losing or the refs screwing the Wings have not played hockey for a long period of time or reffed it. Bank on it.

In the 3rd period, I saw only 2 bulls*** calls. One was on Bert for the trip (or hold), and the other was on Heatley for the goalie interference call which was a joke.

You have a 4-3 lead, and you tank it in the 3rd? Blame the refs! Thats a great excuse.

I'd agree with you but it was Bert's bulls*** penalty that snowballed into an eventual 5-on-3 that lead to the equalizer and totally changed the complexion of the game... At the very least, the game should have been tied after Lidstrom's stick exploded on him... I absolutely HATE to blame the refs, but I think it's very appropriate tonight.

Quoted for Truth

In the 3rd period, I saw only 2 bulls*** calls. One was on Bert for the trip (or hold)

That wasn't a bulls*** call, so much as they just called the wrong penalty.

It was an absolute textbook crosscheck, dive or no dive. Bert deserved a penalty on that play.

I'm a referee so I know how hard it is, and have never blamed the refs solely for a loss, but this sharks win was solely because of bad calls, especially the bertuzzi calls, the second one led to a 5 on 3 which ruined us. This really turns me off the NHL. The officiating is getting worse, probably because players are diving more and more, and its hard for the refs to decipher a dive from a non dive. Just an embarassment to the nhl this game.

I think its the Ref himself..... Brad Watson..... he also dis-allowed a goal By one Marian Hossa in a series with the Ducks last year and if you google that f*****'s name you see all negative posts by all kinds of fans.....

Bert had three calls against him that should not have even been called. If you are so blind to not see the bulls*** calls in this game, you should not even call yourself a hockey fan! My wife, who came from Mexico and never watched hockey until she met me, said she feels embarrased for the NHL and hockey in general for the way this game was called! The same effing ref called the BS calls all through the game! Of course there were some actual penalties, but you can almost imagine the ref who called the BS call against Bert getting excited because there was AN ACTUAL PENALTY he could call to make it a 5 on 3!

Babcock went from his normal smile of, they are calling some stupid s*** tonight, to this look of we are f*cked no matter what we do!

Bert's calls were bulls*** but we gave the refs way too many chances to make questionable calls. We lost this game any way you shake it. It wasn't the refs, even if they were s***ty. The Wings played way too sloppy when they KNOW the refs are calling just about everything.

QFT!!

even though there were some horrible calls, the wings were still 3-2 ahead in the 3rd period and were on the PP. the bert call was soft to negate it but the calls on kronwall, cleary, flip and the too many men were all legit. it was stupid and naive play by some very experienced players that cost the wings this game (and awful luck with the broken stick).

just throwing this out there..... put ritola out for williams. give the guy a chance to make a big impact. williams is invisible.... even on the pp. he had 0 shots by the end of the game.

+1 couldnt play worse..heck Eaves on 1 arm could have played better

So utter ******* pissed off right now. I had to restrain myself from throwing my remote at the TV and ruining my nice flatscreen.

i guess the 1 consolation is that even though the wings have played 2 very poor games, the sharks only just beat them both times. if the wings can stay out of the box and maybe get a few breaks go their way then this series is still very much there to be won IMO.

I'm thankful it only ended up 4-3 with all of this bulls***. This series could be an evenly matched up series and still be entertaining if the refs let the teams just play. I think the Wings played okay given the circumstances, neither terrific or terrible. After a certain point it's hard to get back up and going when you've been knocked down so repeatedly.

No more ******* Sunday games. 0-3 already, whatever it is, it isnt working.

And no more games on any other station besides FSD. Every time we've been on NBC or VS only, we lose.

Just listening to Babs right now, I give him so much credit for staying calm. But he said it for sure, you can't get any momentum or tempo going when part of your team never really sees the ice.

Like the MOD said up thread, if you want to act like a whiny *****, close your account and head over to facebook (Don't come the Sharks board, you will get roasted alive). If you want to watch hockey, then man up and stop acting like a tool.

f'ing pathetic

i've watched hockey longer than you've had a team, sparky...

while i'm not fool enough to blame the refs entirely for this loss, they were a huuuuuge ******* help. as i said previously, this was the worst officiating i've seen, ever, in any league, in all of hockey. ever. longer than you've had a team...

how about you man up and accept that posting on a wings board is gonna get you noticed as an instigator, and take the shots that will inevitably be aimed at you?

yeah, didn't think so youngblood...

let us know what he says...Michigan to GA transplant here

didn't say anything about the refs, pretty much said we have no one to blame but ourselves for being in the box. looking forward to the travel day and getting back to detroit.

rough loss tonight, no complaining because it won't change anything, stick by the team they will pull through

for whoever asked if we have ever comeback from 0-2 down in the series... yes against the Canucks when Lidstrom scored from center ice and changed the series

get back into it on Tuesday...

GO WINGS!

Think we did few years back... Not sure though.

2002 Western Conference Quarterfinals against Vancouver. Detroit lost the first two at home, Dom looked like a sieve, then they went out to Vancouver and Lidstrom scored on Dan Cloutier from center ice. Cloutier was never the same and the Wings never looked back.

I have to agree here. San Jose has had far more opportunities. The scoring chances in the game at one point were 14-12 San Jose according to Versus. I was going to wait before putting that stat out there until I saw the official stats. Still, San Jose had a +10 shot advantage so it seems plausible.

Wings have to come out with a stronger effort. So far, the effort they showed in Game 7 in Phoenix has not been around. It must be sitting in Detroit or on the San Jose tarmac waiting for the late arrival fine to be paid because its not with the team right now.
