When are we going to know the fate of the joe? when are we going to know if there is going to be a new arena built?

im tired of being left in the dark about this. The Joe is falling apart and it either needs to be renavated ASAP or construction on a new building needs to start. The joe can only take about one more season in its current state, maybe 2 tops.

we can all agree that SOMETHING needs to be done whether its a renovation or a new arena it needs to happen.

I for one will not be buying season tickets, or any tickets for that matter until i know whats going on.

your thoughts?

UPDATE:

The Wings’ lease with the city-owned Joe Louis Arena expires in June, and team owner Mike Ilitch’s Olympia Entertainment informed the city of Detroit they did not want another long-term lease.

On Thursday, Ilitch told Detroit’s 97.1 The Ticket’s morning show that the Wings, “Will probably play their games again” next year at JLA, but that the organization is trying to find a way to build a new downtown area.

“We’re still going to get it done,” Ilitch said.

With an estimated cost of a new arena being $400 million in a tough economy, along with a limited market for building, the Wings aren’t in a rush to move. But it will happen.

One of the reasons I'm going to tomorrow night is that I suspect it will be my last chance to see a game at JLA... I think the only question is will it be "the last game, period"... or "the last game in its current configuration"?

the palace could not be a permanent solution for the wings, i would be livid im fine with it for a temparary home for like 3 years tops. im also not in favor of having a shared venur between the pistons and red wings.

another thought if this is in fact the last season at the joe why wouldnt they tell everyone? it would boost ticket sales because everyone would want to watch one last game at the Joe

The Palace is horrible. The amount of traffic is crazy going North between 4P.M.-6P.M. on all the metro Detroit streets and expressways and would have to leave at 2-3 P.M. just to make puck drop at 7:30 P.M. Not much walkable areas around the Palace to enjoy before and after the game. Until Metro Detroit get's a commuter rail with a subway system in place, Downtown Detroit is the only place to put any kind of large stadium at.

I respectfully disagree. There are several good restaurants in the area of the Palace. Its been successful for the Pistons for a long, long time. You don't have to worry about street beggars and there's less potential for your car to get broken into or stolen (I know of at least two occasions where this has happened to friends & family at events in Detroit). Don't get me wrong. I'm not "anti Detroit"...just being realistic.

I don't live in the area anymore so take my opinion for what its worth but moving them to Auburn Hills is a perfectly fine solution while deciding on how to build a new arena. An even better solution is to just start built building it right now and have one last season at the Joe. Personally, I say build now and screw the temp home.

I may be in the minority, but I really like the current location at the Joe - downtown, on the river. I always enter/exit at the river entrance and park on the far side of Cobo - adds to the whole event atmosphere. Far better than having a stadium in the middle of a many-acres parking lot or jammed onto some generic city block somewhere.

I say rehab the Joe or replace with a new arena very near by.

I hope the Palace is the new venue...at least for a couple of years.

I live 5 minutes away from there, so I will attend many more games than I have in the past couple of years.

Please, no. The Palace is a pain in the ass to get to and would only lower attendance. Not to mention the last thing Detroit needs is a sports team to relocate for a couple of years.

New home of the Joe apparently is going to be right near Motor City Casino where they tore a giant chunk of housing down. Makes sense, Ilitches own the Casino. Thought the old Tiger Stadium land would have been better. Tons of bars and could build that area up.

Are they in walking distance in a downtown urban walkable area environment? I bet not. Last time I was in that area, everything was all having to do driving which was sprawled out and that cost $$$$ in gas which is $3.00 a gallon or more.

And please theirs street beggers here in the suburbs. I even had one try and get money out of me right inside Meijers! There's all kinds of break ins from cars to homes happening all across the suburbs. There was also a nice rim theft going on last fall in my area.

I'm also being realistic. Don't try and paint the suburbs of the Detroit area rosy red with no crime happening.

I like the Palace idea for the new venue. I used to watch the Vipers play there. Great place for hockey!

The large man that controlled the blimp at the games was my band teacher in High School.

You are correct...its not a downtown area but it is a more pleasant area to be in. You are also correct about the price of gas for those of us who drive from the burbs. Where ever they end up is fine with me. Everyone will obviously favor what's most convenient for them.

Never said the burbs were a walk in the park. I'm sure crime statistics would speak for themselves. Lets not forget why were here...to support our Wings. Not be critical of each other.

I agree with you that Michigan and Trumbell would be a good place for a new building, though I don't know if it'd be big enough.

There is an open field on the northwest side of Woodward and I75, that I think Mr. Ilitch will build the new Arena. Right across from the townhouses on the east side of Woodward.

I just wish they would start building, and put us union construction workers back to work.

Amen brother, best of luck to ya with getting back to work. Just had an apparent "inside" opinion on it and it seems like its going right by the Motor City. Doesn't matter, although the Joe holds soooo many great memories for me and the smell of old beer and the "great" bathrooms they have there, we definitely deserve a state of the art arena.

Obviously something has to be done... but not the Palace... simply for selfish reasons I guess? But this team deserves a top notch venue unto themselves. What happened to the all that talk of them building that new arena downtown I was hearing about a year back?

Yeah, i have tickets for the first home game of the next series... which i'm doubtful we'll make, I was hoping to go for the same reason.

I agree with you. I always park by the Ren Cen and take the People Mover over, or walk down the River Walk if the weather allows. I really like that walk.

If the Wings play in a temporary home for awhile, I'd like to see them build on the current site.

I'm really going to miss the Joe, though. Sticky floors and nasty bathrooms and all. It's a hole, but dammit, it's our hole!

I totally agree. I was all for saving Tiger Stadium and doing something with it (museum, minor league ballpark, something). However, I always favored that site as the place to put a new Wings/Pistons shared venue. It would do wonders for that area. Corktown has so much potential, it just needs to have a reason for people to make the trip. Motor city casino isn't too far from that site anyway, so it would keep the Ilitches happy.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Not even close, guys.

The new arena is slated to go a block or two "behind" the Fox Theater (due west). The Illitches finally acquired all of the remaining parcels they needed about a 12-18 months ago.

The whole point is to keep that entire area a focused entertainment district.

Having not been to a playoff game at the Joe prior to game 4 I was all in favor of the Red Wings moving to new home, but after experiencing game 4 I really hope they renovate the Joe. The atmosphere at the Joe is amazing and I feel like one of these new cookie cutter excuses of an arena would destroy some of that atmosphere of the Joe that was amazing to be a part of.
