Toughest NHL area for visiting teams to play in

I have always thought that the flames fans were pretty loud. Canadians are usually pretty good fans. Good to see we are up there as well. Would have never guessed the sharks were the worst though

I think Calgary's fanbase is more intimidating for the home team.

I think its more or less just the Sharks' home record that make the HP Pavilion a tough venue. It has been pretty ridiculous over the past few seasons (better than ours). The fans there are probably less threatening than most especially when pretending to be sharks.

i have been going to see the sharks at the tank and with a couple buddies..we boo the s*** out of the opposing team during the preskate right where they enter and exit the locker room ...some of the players DO NOT like it at all... especially derrick morris.

Anyone surprised?

Not surprised at all. Those teams that are on there belong their because of their arenas and the discrepancy of the percentages seems fair to me.

HP Arena has a flat metallic roof that echos the noise so things seem to get loud in there. Great for hockey but really crappy for acoustics for a concert. Unlike the JLA, sellouts are common, it's modern, well light, and not in a ghetto.

I don't believe the home record has to do with the poll results. It's probably how comfortable/uncomfortable the visiting players feel at the various venues.

Nothing wrong with the ghetto!

The mean streets of homes in Detroit.

You're spot on about HP. It's actually a really great place to watch a game. Good replays, good lighting, enthusiastic but not douchey crowd, easy access to beer and food, plenty loud and not really a bad seat in the house.

I do have to take exception to saying JLA is in the ghetto, though. Unless you define all of Detroit as a ghetto, JLA is in a pretty good area. It's a little old, but you're within spitting distance of several nightlife areas and, despite it being near an older urban center, it's incredibly safe down there.

I mean, San Jose is just a suburb of the Bay Area anyway, so comparing the location of HP to the Joe, which is smack in the middle of a major city, is a bit like comparing apples to oranges. Both have their charm.

And for the record, I've been to both barns tens of times, and will, in fact, be at HP tomorrow night for game 5 (proudly rocking my red).

Spoken like someone who has both never been to JLA and doesn't know s*** about the city of Detroit outside of the movie 8 Mile.

I'm certain it does have more to do with the record.

And as for the sellouts stat lets rewind two years and discuss the sellout situation. Which city and arena has a richer tradition? I mean the entire planet knows how rabid the NorCal hockey scene is. Between the Golden Seals and Sharks the banners are innumerable. A history rich with championships and names synonymous with 'greatness'. Hockeytown just doesn't live up to it.

what does rich tradition have to do with selling out

the sharks have had great attendance since their second year. numbers pretty similar to the red wings'.

Isn't Detroit taking over abandoned properties via eminent domain so they can demolish it and then shrink the city boundaries?

You're right. Never been to JLA. Don't care to. Auburn Hills, another story.

I don't think people realize just how major a city SJ is.

US ranks in terms of population

San Jose #10

Detroit #11

Granted this is from data collected in '07, but the census is being tallied right now and I think it kinda gets the point across anyway. Both cities are large. :)

I think the disparity will get wider with the effects of the recession.

Sorry if I was misunderstood. San Jose is a big place, even larger than the more widely recognized Oakland and San Francisco.

But...

San Jose came to prominence due to its relative position to the state capital and SF/Bay Area. It was never a "major" city in terms of history, and saw its growth only in the modern era. Detroit, on the other hand, was once the country's 4th largest city, behind only Chicago, LA and NYC. The lays of the land are completely different as a result.

JLA is near the center of Detroit proper, which was built to support almost 5x what San Jose has become. Of course we all know how that turned out, but the architecture, zoning and general layout are vastly different because of this. HP sits neatly right off the highway, near the airport and some high rise hotels. JLA, by contrast, sits on the river in the middle of what was once a booming urban center.

I'm not saying one is better than the other, only that to compare them is silly. It's like comparing a 4x4 work truck to a two seat hybrid vehicle. Both have their place, but you can't really draw many parallels between them.

StubHub. I worked there for years and years. Great little site ;)
