GMRwings1983 8,794 Report post Posted May 8, 2010 (edited) I was wondering if anyone will be watching the "Broadstreet Bullies" documentary on HBO these next few days, about the Flyers teams back in the heyday? I watched it this morning, and thought it was very interesting, and would reccommend it even for fans who don't like the fisticuffs aspect of hockey. Say what you want about those teams, they were controversial, and had a huge influence on hockey in general. Also, it's not often that HBO does a show about hockey. Anyway, check your listings because it'll be on these next couple of days, and will be on today at 1:30 ET as the next showing. NGKEIB 32 Report post Posted May 8, 2010 Sounds interesting, I'll see if I can download it. (For anyone who is interested, it is also quite easy to download the famous '76 match between the Flyers and the Soviets, when Van Impe knocked Kharlamov out with a hit). I read an interview fairly recently, though I can't remember who with (I think it was on the THN website), and he was saying that before his team (the Leafs?) had to play Philly in the playoffs, many of the Toronto players went down with 'injuries' because they didn't want to face the Flyers. As you say it's not so often you see HBO doing anything about hockey, but its also not so often here in the states we see anything containing old time hockey. For that reason too it was cool to see the archival footage in HD. It definitely left me wanting more. FYI It's available On Demand too. Yeah, the footage was awesome and is the best footage I've ever seen from those days in terms of quality of video. Also, I never knew that the Soviets came back to finish the game after leaving the ice. I thought the game just ended with them leaving.
Marty Barry 230 Report post Posted May 8, 2010 Just watched it on On Demand. Great documentary, and I wasn't too familiar with the whole Broad Street Bullies thing. I knew the knickname, but geez, they were bastards. Gotta love em. LOL at Clement being one of them, everytime I see him I think "Clement, Clement hands of cement" from the old NHL commercial where he is picked last for the street hockey team. Yeah - it was, uh, interesting to see Bobby Clarke's 30 ft windup and slash on Kharlamov's ankle again, but this time in HD on a big TV. Ross Lonsberry used to play in my beer league out in LA a few years ago. Even as an old timer he had amazing puck sense. Edited May 8, 2010 by kook_10
