newfy 695 Report post Posted May 8, 2010 I know this is old news but doesn't anyone else here think this team is a joke? Lemieux was probably a better player then Gretzkey but somehow didn't get on the list, Salming and Fetisov over Bobby Orr? I wouldn't even rank Salming above Lidstrom all time. And really no Gordie Howe? The most well rounded player of all time. The IIHF is a joke. At a gala evening at the Quebec City Convention Centre on Saturday, the IIHF announced its Centennial All-Star Team, featuring the six most successful players in the history of international ice hockey as voted by an expert panel. The six members of the All-Star Team are: Goaltender: Vladislav Tretiak (Russia) First Defenceman: Vyacheslav Fetisov (Russia) Second Defenceman: Borje Salming (Sweden) First Winger: Valeri Kharlamov (Russia) Second Winger: Sergei Makarov (Russia) Centre: Wayne Gretzky (Canada) 1 #18 the _Hoss_ reacted to this

GMRwings1983 8,794 Report post Posted May 8, 2010 This list would make more sense if Gretzky wasn't on it. Then you could say that the list was based on players who played international hockey.
softshoes 83 Report post Posted May 8, 2010 This list would make more sense if Gretzky wasn't on it. Then you could say that the list was based on players who played international hockey. I was going to mention that but lots of people think their hockey list is faulty if they don't have The Great One on it. No matter what the criteria.
sibiriak 84 Report post Posted May 8, 2010 This list would make more sense if Gretzky wasn't on it. Then you could say that the list was based on players who played international hockey. Gretzky did play for Canada in the IIHF World Hockey Championships. Lemieux, Orr, or Howe never did play in an IIHF tournament. So, they aren't on the team. dat's sick 1,002 Report post Posted May 8, 2010 Like previous posters said it's international play. Those are great selections, although it should maybe be Larionov isntead of Gretzky.

eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted May 8, 2010 Yzerman should be on the list over Gretzky; Yzerman had far more international success than Gretzky did.
ltgator333 3 Report post Posted May 8, 2010 Heck with that, check out how many Wings/former Wings are triple gold- http://www.iihf.com/iihf-home/history/the-iihf/triple-gold-club.html
GONGSHOW HOCKEY 35 Report post Posted May 9, 2010 Yzerman should be on the list over Gretzky; Yzerman had far more international success than Gretzky did. Bit of an exaggeration imo. Gretzky did alot on the international stage during his career.
Finnish Wing 110 Report post Posted May 9, 2010 (edited) "The IIHF is a joke"... LOL, Too many European players in there for your taste? Your lemieux and gretzkys have little against the greatest players of the Big Red Machine in terms of international accomplishments. The only "joke" about that list is Gretzky being in there. This obviously shows - yet again - that you have no clue of the what has happened in hockey outside your sweet America. eva unit zero 271 Report post Posted May 9, 2010 Bit of an exaggeration imo. Gretzky did alot on the international stage during his career. Yzerman was the Canadian international assists and points all-time record holder until Heatley passed him. Yzerman being better than Gretzky defensively, better physically, faster, a better leader, and better on faceoffs generally would suggest Yzerman should be the pick for center before Gretzky. Although Larionov probably deserves it more. How about Sven Tumba? He'd be a pretty damn good choice also. Regardless, Gretzky is well down the list of who should be on the list at center (Tumba, Larionov, Yzerman), and Lidstrom's international experience is limited due largely to the Wings' playoff success.
