Is the game TOO fast?

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking about the officiating in the NHL (obviously) and I'm wondering if anyone else thinks that maybe the game has gotten too fast and it's getting harder and harder for refs to keep up with the play? With all the obstruction being called (mostly), is the game moving too fast to get reliable officiating on the ice?

I just can't believe that they are as bad as they seem...

Its a natural progression of the game and yes we love to blame the officials for everything. I used to referee myself and let me tell you its no easy task. Obviously it was at amateur level and the things moved so fast that sometimes I pretty much had to guess as to what happened and try to make it look like I knew what I was doing... Of course those guys are supposed to be professionals but I can see where they sometimes can't possible make the right call. Maybe they should employ a slomo replay system with the referee sitting there and looking at it and calling penalties that way? I think I would be for it.

They are supposed to call everything and we as fans have changed as well. We expect everything to be called now so when something gets missed it is noticed more. I would prefer if they didn't call everything unless it was major like the good old days. They catch somethings nowadays and miss things and in the series vs. the Sharks it really showed and really gave an advantage to one team. If they eliminated calling everything we would lose so much of the boderline bulls*** that is ruining the game today.

Canada vs. USA Gold medal game. Best reffed game I saw all year.

It isn't humanly possible to catch everything at the speed of the game nowadays. I'd say that it never was, but even more so now.

Half of what I see, I only see on replay. Of course, I only have the camera angles that are available to me whereas they have the whole ice to watch. This can be a positive or a negative. On one hand, they are right there. On the other hand, I'm focused on a small part of the ice.

What gets me bent out of shape is when they are standing there and let something go that they called someone on right before. Be consistent.

I agree with Zettie. It was better when they only called what they had to.
