Babcock confident in Lidstrom's return

Alright guys, here's some good news.

http://detnews.com/article/20100510/SPORTS0103/5100420/1128/sports0103/Nick-Lidstrom--will-be-back--Wings-coach-Mike-Babcock-says

The part about believing we still have a chance to win caught my eye. If Nick comes back, its to win a another Cup. This tells me he's going to be willing to take a discount. I think Nick and Homer are going to satisfy us by taking sweetheart deals.

Love it! clap.gif

Babs has the pulse of the whole thing. Even if Nick has a house being built in Sweden and his kid is going to play there doesn't necessarily mean we can't get 1 more year from one of the greatest defenseman to ever play.

Not that it means anything, but I personally havent doubted for one second that he will be back for next year. Just a gut feeling. At the same time though, I personally think next year will be his last.

Hope we stay healthy all year and let Lids go out like the winner that he is!

If Lidstrom would take a pretty substantial pay cut to play say for another 2 years that will leave us with some pretty good money to go out and get some players.Looking at the 2010 FA list, there are some pretty good names to consider.2010 NHL Free Agents by position

I think he is planning on staying, otherwise why make it public that he has enrolled his kid in school in Sweden? Gotta be to squeeze the Wings on a contract. This so disappointing because it indicates he's not into giving the Wings much of a discount. I don't want him to leave but I can't really come to terms as to what he should be paid either. To me he is worth more than Rafalski but Holland screwed the pooch when he gave that 6M for 2 more years to Rafalski. How can Holland ask Lidstrom to take less than 6M with a straight face?

Could be a safety net enrolment.

If I decide to retire then my son has a spot at this school. Its probably easier to play by the schools rules before than to try and break them in the fall to squeeze his son in late.

Good luck with that in Sweden

Hey ya'll if you read what it says they applied for that hockey thing for his son IF he would move back so he'd have something to do.

We would have heard a lot more about Lidstrom's last season/game from the team if this was going to be his last season IMO. I have confidence he'll be coming back.

Or maybe they didn't want the spectre of Nick's imminent retirement to take over the fact they were battling to stay alive in the playoffs. We didn't hear a whole lot about Steve retiring until the press conference.

Again, why make it public? You can have a safety net without making it public. Who does he want to know that the kid is enrolled there and why?

See, this is what I don't get...if he's coming back, it's gotta be because he wants a cup. In order for this team to win another cup, he needs to take a big time pay cut (down to like 3 million?) so they can make a significant signing. Otherwise, he might as well retire IMO. What else is there for him to prove?

Did the preseason start yet? Stupid offseason.

But in all seriousness ... if Lidstrom comes back and says it's his last year, I can't imagine any way that doesn't motivate the team throughout the season.

They didn't lose to the sharks because they couldn't score. They lost because they couldn't play lock-down d like they used to. Signing Kovalchuk looks nice, but I still don't think that addresses the Wing's biggest weakness. The team needs a big, strong d-man that can move people away from the front of the net and single handedly retrieve a puck from the corner. The Wing's dmem, other than Stuart, are too soft, imo. They need a guy like Sutton.

As well as Howard played this year, he only had one shutout in the regular season and one in the playoffs. He's faced more shots in the playoffs than any other goalie. Remember the days when the Wings could hold teams to 20 shots per game? This year the shot totals were MUCH higher. Defense wins in the playoffs, not offense.
